[name_m]Hugh[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] [HYOO] is from the Germanic element hugu[name_f][/name_f] meaning “heart, mind, spirit, thought”. It is a meaningful little name with a rather lively sound.

I go back and forth on which I prefer, [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] or [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. I think, however, that I prefer [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. (Well, at least today.)
[name_f][/name_f]
What do you think of the name [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]? Which, if any, of the combos below do you like?
I like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] a lot! He has the elegance of [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but with a softer, friendlier sound. From your list, I’m really liking [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Alban[/name_m], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Laurie[/name_m], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], & [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Timothy[/name_m].
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is lovely! [name_f][/name_f] I love the meaning, although I do prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] myself (prefer the tie to [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] & [name_m]Les[/name_m] Mis to [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] Hefner lol, but I know that’s not everyone’s association!).
[name_f][/name_f]
I love these from your options!
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Amory[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_f]Aubrey[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_f]Avery[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Barclay[/name_m] (although like [name_m]Barkley[/name_m] for your grandfather; I just prefer the [name_m]Barclay[/name_m] spelling myself!) [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_f]Blyth[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Elliott[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Emory[/name_m] (Hugo [name_m]Emerson[/name_m] was on my list years ago, I love that this reminds me of him!) [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Forest[/name_m] (this almost sounds like “huge forest” to me and I don’t know if I like or dislike that… [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Forster[/name_m] might be nice as well!) [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_f]Larkspur[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Sterling[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f][name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_f]Wren[/name_f] (although I think I prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_f]Wren[/name_f], [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_f]Wren[/name_f] is a bit abrupt for me)
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is one of my favorite names, and I love the nn [name_m]Hughie[/name_m]. [name_f][/name_f] I also like the Welsh variation, [name_m]Huw[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f]
I fell in love with the three names of the boys in [name_m]Paul[/name_m] Gallico’s The Three Lives of [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]: [name_m]Hughie[/name_m], [name_m]Jamie[/name_m], and [name_m]Geordie[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Favorite[/name_m] combo is [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] combos are [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Alasdair[/name_m].
I have loved [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] for years and as a pp mentioned, [name_m]Hughie[/name_m] is a sweet nickname especially while he is young. There are so many nice combinations on your list but I think my favourites are…
I love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]! [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Elliott[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Robin[/name_m] are some of my favourite combinations from your list
Thank you so much for the responses! I’m sorry I hadn’t a chance to reply yet.

@Greyblue[name_f][/name_f]: I agree 100%. I see [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] as gentle and academic but still rugged. [name_f][/name_f] I’m glad you like some of my combos!
[name_f][/name_f]
@daisydarcy[name_f][/name_f]: That’s a great way to put it. I adore [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], it was one of my favorite names for years. I’ve softened lately to [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and he’s made his way up the list.
[name_f][/name_f]
A side note, I adore [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Laurie[/name_m] but because of the actor it’s a bit much, albeit he is a great actor.
[name_f][/name_f]
@ashthedreamer[name_f][/name_f]: It’s funny how associations work! [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] was actually my great grandfather’s name so him and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Laurie[/name_m] are my associations.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Emerson[/name_m] would be cute! And I agree that [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_f]Wren[/name_f] sounds nicer. I was thinking on it and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_f]Wren[/name_f] reminds me vaguely of Huron or ‘human’. [name_f][/name_f] Sounds are fun.
@miloowen[name_f][/name_f]: [name_m]Hughie[/name_m] is so cute. I also like [name_m]Huw[/name_m] and the wordy Hue.
[name_f][/name_f]
I’ve never heard of The Three Lives of [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]. I’ll have to check it out. [name_f]My[/name_f] partner is a [name_m]Jamie[/name_m] so I’m personally a huge fan of that name. [name_m]Geordie[/name_m] is interesting! It’s never really been on my radar but it’s definitely a cute nickname, for [name_m]George[/name_m] I presume.
[name_f][/name_f]
I love[name_f][/name_f] the name [name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] is very handsome. On my actual long list for [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]— listography: Long List (Hugh)[name_f][/name_f] —I have [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Alastair[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] so I 100% agree. I have already used [name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] though so really it’s just because I like the sound of the name.
