Hugo, Oak, Xanthus

We are expecting our second child, and have a list of names for boys that we have been chewing on for months/years but can never seem to settle or commit due to various qualms. If you could settle some of our questions, or suggest alternatives, we might be able to stop wandering round our list in this lost manner.

[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - We have loved [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] for years, but are meeting more and more, and the name seems to be getting so familiar that our love is slightly waning. Maybe it would be OK once we named him.

[name_u]Oak[/name_u] - too little name for the first? It will be in the middle if not the first, but first appeals

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] - just general commitment issues

[name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] - this was a GP name, we are not Greek so we preferred this spelling to [name_m]Xanthos[/name_m]. Our daughter is [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] so the fair/golden meaning is really appealing to match with her meaning. But, how do you feel this name would go down?

[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] - one of our siblings names

I like [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] the best out of all of your names, but what about [name_m]Gaius[/name_m]?

[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is gorgeous

[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] works great

@jensowvlen Thanks for your [name_m]Gaius[/name_m] suggestion! I hadn’t thought of it - love the us ending. I do fear in our nickname obsessed country that he would be [name_m]Guy[/name_m].

@kipperbo1
Seeing you write them together reinforced how much I like [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] with our A.

Its funny I really like the name [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] (I even considered it for #3 for a while) but something about it like you said, I just cant commit to it! I don’t know why?

I think you should choose [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] if it’s the name you have loved for years! It’s a solid name and I don’t think it will ever be so popular you regret it

[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Xanthos[/name_m] looks great!

My favorite is [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] followed up by [name_m]Reuben[/name_m].
Other -o names: [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m], [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m], [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u], [name_m]Rocco[/name_m], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_u]Beau[/name_u], [name_m]Antonio[/name_m], [name_m]Emilio[/name_m], [name_m]Romeo[/name_m], [name_m]Enzo[/name_m], [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_m]Inigo[/name_m], [name_m]Ignacio[/name_m], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_m]Cosimo[/name_m]
Other -us names: [name_m]Caius[/name_m], [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m], [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Angus[/name_m], [name_m]Fergus[/name_m], [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_m]Cassius[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_m]Marius[/name_m], [name_m]Maximus[/name_m], [name_m]Remus[/name_m], [name_m]Oceanus[/name_m]
Other names you might like: [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m], [name_m]Hector[/name_m], [name_m]Castor[/name_m], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_m]Alphonse[/name_m], [name_m]Matthias[/name_m], [name_m]Pascal[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_u]Vernon[/name_u], [name_m]Cedric[/name_m], [name_m]Alaric[/name_m], [name_m]Conrad[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_u]Dorian[/name_u], [name_m]Forrest[/name_m], [name_m]Ansel[/name_m], [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], [name_m]Eamon[/name_m], [name_m]Soren[/name_m], [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], [name_m]Oren[/name_m]

I would keep [name_u]Oak[/name_u] and [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] in the middle. Others are fine.

[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] may be gaining in popularity but I still meet far more Griffins than I do Hugos. I would say it is still woth considering. However. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_u]Oak[/name_u] runs together I think.

Also [name_u]Oak[/name_u] as a first does feel a tad small next to sister [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], but not undoable.

I love [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m]! Not only is it great with [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] bit I feel like is follows suit with names like [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], etc. Which have been gaining momentum but aren’t as popular or used as say [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] or [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. And I think [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] [name_u]Oak[/name_u] is and awesome fn/mn combo.

Oh and I almost forgot [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]!
I also really like how this sounds with sister [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]. If you are afraid [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] is too unconventional in the fn spot than [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is a good choice. I’m not as keen on [name_m]Rueben[/name_m] [name_u]Oak[/name_u] but it definitely works and is a terrific name.

So overall the order I like your options in, best to least, is:
[name_m]Xanthus[/name_m]
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_u]Oak[/name_u]
[name_m]Griffin[/name_m]

I like [name_u]Oak[/name_u] for a first name!

All your choices are so great!

I love [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. I think it goes so nicely with [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]. I’ve personally never met a [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], so that might be where some of the charm comes from for me. I think it’s just so handsome and sweet.

I think [name_u]Oak[/name_u] could definitely work as a first name! It’s a little short, especially next to [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], but that’s not so big of a deal. I think itd be unique (but not in a bad way!), and would definitely fit in with all of the nature names rising in popularity.

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is one of my favorite names. I think it’s extremely handsome and sweet. It reminds me of a kind, adventurous little boy! I also love that he could be called [name_u]Finn[/name_u] (though nicknames might not be your thing!) It sounds to me though that [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] might not be the best choice for you.

[name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] is incredibly cool. I think it matches perfectly with [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]. The beginning makes in familiar (like [name_m]Xander[/name_m]), so I dont think it would stick out too much despite being a name most people dont hear that often (unless you live somewhere where this name is not unheard of!)

[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] is a name I’ve never been very fond of. I also think it doesnt live up to the beautiful and magical [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]. If it’s important to you though, it could make a nice middle!!

I think [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] [name_u]Oak[/name_u], and [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] [name_u]Oak[/name_u] are really nice combos!

You have completely nailed our taste! Thankyou for such great suggestions. We have seriously discussed [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_m]Eamon[/name_m] and [name_m]Forrest[/name_m]. I really like your suggestion of [name_m]Remus[/name_m] being a HP reader, and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]. We often ask each other, does [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] sound too much like it’s meaning of great? It is pretentious? Or can it carry a humble vibe too?

Your thoughts are much appreciated! I am so stoked that you think [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] has potential. We like the names that you associate it with it - still an ‘us’ ending but not as intense as [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] for us. Also interesting that you have been meeting more Griffins than Hugos, as I’m yet to meet one.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] sounds so sweet and Latin with [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], but [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] to me has the little extra flare that we like.

Thank you so much for your thoughts. We do agree, the one syllable [name_u]Oak[/name_u] with four syllable [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] does seem rather small. And we can always put it in the middle and follow our tradition of a nature middle.

We really liked [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as an option for [name_m]Griffin[/name_m]'s nickname - glad you think that’s legit too. Though it adds to the indecision because we consider [name_u]Finn[/name_u] as well, and what if we ended up always calling him [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and wishing that was his official name?

I agree, [name_m]Xander[/name_m] and [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] are well known names so [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] this should feel familiar enough. I’m glad you’re another vote for this GP being usable. We love [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] for a girl which is how we stumbled upon it.

Appreciate all your opinions so much

I love [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]. Since there aren’t many Latin scholars these days, I don’t think the meaning is an issue. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] are great as well and I think they all work well with [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f].

That is very true, not many people will be thinking ‘great’ and the title of a sovereign. I love it too, if only I could get those connotations out of the way.

Yes I really do think it’s a viable choice!
Of course my own son is named [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] so I’m pretty bold when it comes to names.

I think [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] are all lovely with [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f].
[name_m]Xanthus[/name_m] and [name_u]Oak[/name_u] are great names, too, but a little more unusual than [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] (not that that’s a deal-breaker).

I hear you on [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]'s popularity. Are you in Aus or NZ (guessing from your comment about nicknames)? If you’re in Australia, [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is at #47 on the popularity charts. [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] are below the top 100, but [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is 43 (so his nn might be more common than you’d like).

An unusual middle name could help balance out [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]'s popularity. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m], for instance, would be a lovely mix of the familiar and unexpected. [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] [name_m]Xanthus[/name_m], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] [name_u]Oak[/name_u] or [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] would be nice too.

I think Magnus and Remus work, too. Magnus could go by Gus if you’re worried about nickname possibilities

Good luck!

I did see your signature and son’s wonderful name and appreciated your love of ancient and Greek. I love so many of your names. [name_m]How[/name_m] has your sons name been received?
