Hugo or Oscar?

We are having the hardest time naming baby boy #2. Our first is [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] and we came to that name rather quickly (it was a combination of liking the name and family connections). We both really like [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] this time around (they are the ONLY names we can agree on). Which do you like better? (FWIW: Other names we considered this time around were [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]Paul[/name_m], [name_m]Martin[/name_m], and [name_m]Henry[/name_m]).

Welcome, @jm_hoosier, and congratulations on your second boy!

Gerald is a really great choice for your first – everybody knows it, but very few are using it right now.

Oscar and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] are definitely more popular (and rising) but they share [name_m]Gerald[/name_m]’s old-school vibe. I think I like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] slightly better with brother [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] – it seems a bit more solid and a bit less “posh” than [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] (for want of a better word). [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] seems like a warm, down-to-earth sort of name and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] fits that a little better, IMO.

Have you considered [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]? That feels like a great stylistic fit with [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] and with your wider taste in names.

I prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]

I really like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] with [name_m]Gerald[/name_m], they’re both so cute and vintage sounding!

Thanks! Your “less posh” comment perfectly describes my hesitation with [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]! I like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] as well, but we have a short, blah, ethnic, one-syllable last name that I felt needed the extra syllable/harder sounds in the first to balance it…

Normally I prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] but with [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] I really like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]!

Exactly my thought, as well.

I dislike the word generally but struggle to know how else to articulate it! [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] feels that bit more friendly and rugged to me. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is gorgeous too, and still fits well as an underused vintage name, but [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] sound like a fun pairing

I like [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] with [name_m]Gerald[/name_m]. I just see a [name_u]Gerry[/name_u] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] being brothers. :slightly_smiling_face:

[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]! [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] doesn’t appeal to me, and seems harsher than [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].

While I love both names [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is soooo handsome and sturdy with big brother [name_m]Gerald[/name_m]

First, amazing choice. [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] is one of my favourite boy names and has been for awhile.

Second, [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] match better in vibe imo.

I love both [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] so it’s a tough choice. They’re both fresh, spunky classics with vintage flair. Probably with [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] I’d pick [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] but I think that’s only because it’s more similar in length. So basically I’m not being very helpful… You can’t go wrong though!

I like both, but I think [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] goes better as a first name. why not use both names for the baby as in [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].

I really like both [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_u]Oliver[/name_u].
[name_m]Gerald[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Gerald[/name_m] and [name_u]Oliver[/name_u]

Both soubdgood. Cant really go wrong here!
[name_m]Gun[/name_m] to my head, Id pick [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], though

Oscar.

I vote for [name_m]Hugo[/name_m].

Welcome and congratulations! I personally prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but I think [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] goes better with [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] (love [name_m]Gerald[/name_m] btw!).
