For the past few weeks I’ve been wondering about Chamomile’s suitability as a name. Not as a first name, mind you. I was thinking it would make a sweet middle name to a more modest first.
[name]Maude[/name] Chamomile was my initial thought. After ‘haunting’ me I’ve decided to add her to my long (maybe) future use list.
What do you think?
Could Chamomile [cam-oh-meel] be a quirky middle name to a modest first name? If you absolutely HAD to use the name, what would you use as a first?
Honestly, I do not think I could use Chamomile even for a middle name, it reminds me of having the chicken pox and having to put chamomile on my pox so I wouldn’t scratch them, sorry. I do love the name [name]Maude[/name] though!
I think [name]Maude[/name] Chamomile is lovely. Chamomile is pretty and balances out the heavier [name]Maude[/name]. It’s a very sweet middle. If forced, I’d probably pair it with [name]Rose[/name]- a plainer name (and the only one I’m loving at the mo). [name]Rose[/name] Camomile is a bit too flower-power though I’m sticking with the Camomile spelling- when I first read the post, I thought I’d always been spelling it wrong but the OED says Chamomile is the N. American spelling so I believe Camomile is British
[name]EDIT[/name]: Is it pronounced different over the pond? [name]Just[/name] re-read the OP and saw the ‘meel’ ending. I’ve always pronounced it with the ‘mile’ ending
Here we pronounce it both cam-oh-meel and cam-oh-mile. It’s a regional difference. I personally use both pronunciations depending on context and mood. In this situation I was using the pronunciation cam-oh-meel because I felt that it’s more conducive to nicknames and thus more of a ‘name’.
Camomile is a very pretty spelling and has more of a ‘name’ feel. I really like it.
Hmm…
I think [name]Maude[/name] is cute, and timely but she isn’t my favourite retro choice. I would prefer [name]Mary[/name]. As for Chamomile for me this isn’t a great choice, I think this name is too out-their and I automatically thought of chicken pox as well.
Chamomile is lovely. It is sweet and whimsical, familiar enough, the eye might see [name]Camille[/name], but aside from that I think it’s so nice in the middle spot. It makes me think of something like [name]Calico[/name]…it really works, but it makes most of the names that I like sound like they could belong to [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] characters or something so I tread lightly!
[name]Maude[/name] is a good pair in length & vibe, but all of the Ms trip me up a bit.
It sounds weird to me. I’m pretty adventurous but I just think of tea when I hear chamomile. I think it has sort of a medicinal sound and doesn’t sound pleasant as a name.
I don’t hate it… but with the spelling Camomile… it makes me just want to revert to the sweet and simple [name]Camille[/name] instead. Seems lovelier to me. But [name]Maude[/name] Chamomile (meel, not mile) is a sweet name.
Not strange at all. Everyone likes (or dislikes) different names for different reasons. While I’d prefer [name]Camille[/name], I can’t deny the beauty of Chamomile. And the [name]Tea[/name] is soothing so I think it’s nice.
And as for the chicken pox thing… I believe it is CALAMINE Lotion, not Chamomile.
I’m 99% sure they’re thinking of the icky pink calamine lotion that is used to stop itching. I can see the similarities between the products because of their names but chamomile and calamine are completely unrelated.
I don’t like the first syllable; [name]Cam[/name]… [name]Cam[/name]… it just doesn’t sit well in the mouth. To make the sound you have to to widen your mouth, something I’ve been told NOT to do for six years in choir and voice lessons, so that’s not helping either…
