Husband finally gave me a list!

Because we do not want to have children any time soon, my husband has brushed off my name obsession for the most part, until now!

For [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]'s [name_u]Day[/name_u], my husband gave me a name list! Here it is:

Boy’s names:

1 Mohondas -Gandhi’s original first name

2 [name_m]Agustus[/name_m] -of [name_m]Rome[/name_m]

3 [name_m]Caesar[/name_m] -of [name_m]Rome[/name_m]

4 [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] -of To Kill A Mockingbird

5 Bortolome -de las Casas

6 [name_u]Everett[/name_u] -A name I pushed hard a while ago that he wasn’t crazy about, go
figure

7 [name_m]Mowgli[/name_m] -of the Jungle Book

8 Roran -of the Eragon book series

9 [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] -[name_f]Jamaica[/name_f]

10 [name_f]Nesta[/name_f] -[name_m]Bob[/name_m] [name_u]Marley[/name_u]'s middle name

11 [name_m]Salvador[/name_m] -The other name my in-laws considered for my husband. He never liked it and was always so glad he wasn’t named that until I told him I really like it, but I prefer [name_m]Salvator[/name_m], with a T.

Girl’s names:

1 [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] -my name, which I also love

2 [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] -He recently told me he likes floral/nature names for girls.

3 [name_f]Camila[/name_f] -see above

4 [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] -One of the few names we agree on, but we use the Spanish pronunciation EE-suh-bel

5 [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] -for its connection to [name_m]Rome[/name_m]

6 [name_f]Acacia[/name_f] -for the tree

7 [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]

8 [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]

9 [name_f]Pierina[/name_f] -His grandmother’s name, She goes by [name_u]Pat[/name_u].

10 [name_f]Patricia[/name_f] - [name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother’s name, She went by [name_u]Pat[/name_u]. Also, his mother’s name, but she hates it and goes by [name_u]Tisha[/name_u] (NOT [name_f]Trisha[/name_f], haha).

11 [name_u]Sequoia[/name_u] -For the tree, the national park, and I think a Native American association?

12 [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] -Yes, for the plant  But the Spanish version [name_f]Lila[/name_f] sounds better to me.

No offense to anyone who likes plant names for girls, it’s just NMS. Also, our last name ends in S, so Mohondas, [name_m]Agustus[/name_m], and [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] are pretty unusable in my opinion. I irrationally can’t stand names that begin with C, so [name_m]Caesar[/name_m] and [name_f]Camila[/name_f] are basically out as well.Anyway, it’s the thought that counts! I am overjoyed that he wrote a list for me!

So, what do you all think? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestions of other names he might like (hopefully ones that I might like too)?

[name_f]My[/name_f] top names are [name_m]Lysander[/name_m], [name_u]Monroe[/name_u], and Sante for a boy and [name_f]Odette[/name_f] and Fiametta for a girl.

Yay! [name_m]Count[/name_m] yourself a lucky woman. Most husbands I read about here on Nameberry can’t seem to do anything but veto Mom’s choices without offering any options of their own! [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite on the boys list is Bartolomé (this is the correct de las Casas spelling) and [name_u]Everett[/name_u]. The girls list has some lovely ones: [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] (fave) [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Rachel[/name_f]. I love [name_m]Lysander[/name_m], [name_f]Odette[/name_f] and [name_f]Fiammetta[/name_f] (this spelling is the correct Italian spelling). I think you’re right to avoid names that end in “s” with your “S” surname.

Bartolomé is one of my favorites of his usable suggestions, but our surname begins with M and the initials B.M. really bother me, but I wonder if normal people think of the hospital abbreviation for bowel movements when they hear BM?

I don’t know if many people would be familiar with BM for bowel movements. Maybe health professionals. But wouldn’t he have a middle name anyway? [name_m]Just[/name_m] make sure you’re careful with the mn initial (eg. avoid a vowel like U because the his initials would be BUM). Now, BAM would be cool. You could give him the nn Bam-Bam.

I like [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f]. Of your own choices, I adore [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] and [name_f]Odette[/name_f]. I say you’ve got some nice names  (Avoided picking names ending in -s… Although I have to say, that I so prefer [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] over [name_m]Agustus[/name_m] )

@ [name_u]Mischa[/name_u] Bam-Bam is totally adorable, thanks.

is the only male name I like.

[name_f]Azalea[/name_f], [name_f]Acacia[/name_f], and [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] are lovely.

@ lesliemarion Thanks for the feedback! Maybe I need to get into nature names!

I think

A) Your husband gave you a list, when normally that’s not something he would do and
B) That list includes [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_m]Salvador[/name_m], which are two names that he disliked until he found out that you liked them

Based on that, I think you should sit on your opinions for a while (assuming you aren’t having a baby tomorrow), and see if any of his favorites could grow on you, or if any of your hangups against repeating sounds or initials maybe don’t have to be deal killers. And personally, I think your husband has pretty good taste. I especially like [name_f]Lilac[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites from your boys list are [name_m]Lysander[/name_m], [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_m]Salvador[/name_m]/[name_m]Salvator[/name_m].
I suggest [name_u]August[/name_u] or [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] as alternative to [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]. [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m], [name_m]Piero[/name_m], and [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] would be cool, too.

For girls I particularly like [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] (I love it when people name daughters after their mothers!), [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Pierina[/name_f], and [name_f]Fiammetta[/name_f] (this spelling only!).

Maybe you can compromise by using a “subtle” plants names for girls: [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Iolanthe[/name_f], [name_f]Yolande[/name_f], [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f], [name_f]Anthea[/name_f], [name_f]Fiorella[/name_f], [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], Ornella, [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f], [name_f]Melia[/name_f], [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f], [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], Sylvane, Madelief, [name_f]May[/name_f]?

Also, your husband’s list gives you a lot of hints about what he values in both a girls name and a boys name, which should really help you find names that you both will like. For boys, he trends very literary/historical…so maybe it’s time to start reading some of his favorite books and about the parts of history that inspire him and look for names that fit your style better. For example, Mohandas is not your style…but maybe [name_m]Nelson[/name_m], after [name_m]Nelson[/name_m] [name_m]Mandela[/name_m], would be? Or if [name_f]Jamaica[/name_f] is important to him, I bet Jamaican history is a treasure trove of names of all kinds of styles. For girls, he likes associations with women that he is close to and with beautiful things in nature. Personally, I think [name_f]Pierina[/name_f] is gorgeous and similar in style to your Fiametta…I’d make it a strong contender for at least a nickname. But it also looks like you might be able to get somewhere by looking up [name_m]French[/name_m] and Italian names for trees or flowers, checking if any of your favorite girl names are also the names of beautiful natural places (lots of places get named after women, after all) that you could take him, and checking his family tree to see if there are any more gems. And of course, there are probably some important women in some of his books and in Jamaican and [name_m]Roman[/name_m] history too…maybe you’ll like their names.
