Okay, so … I’ve had a secret crush on [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] for a while now, and I am curious what people’s thoughts are on it. We have a baby due in [name_f]July[/name_f], and I thought I had a girl’s name picked out, but this name is creeping up on me.
Some background:
It’s a family name in my mother’s family (thought no one has used it for years and years)
Our last name is two syllables, “B----elle”
We live in NYC, where interesting names are par for the course, so she would not be the only one in the area with a less traditional name
Thoughts? I love the flower, too. I think it’s strong, feminine, super unique - and yet, maybe because I’ve never met a [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], I wonder if it is just too-too out there? (It’s not too long, it’s not hard to read or to pronounce, it has a beautiful association, and I love that it’s a family name too.) Eager to hear what you think - and I can take it :), so let me know!
I like to go on there and see possible ways that my child could be teased with a certain name.
Like the reviews on this name say, I would just worry about people saying “Hiya, Cinth!” but I don’t know if it would be that bad… I once knew a girl named Hei L@@m and her nickname was Hei Hei, so people would say “Hey Hei Hei!” but it wasn’t that bad and I don’t think she was bothered by it.
I adore [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f]! It makes me think of the character from Keeping Up Appearances, and that makes me laugh. My grandmother was a florist and loved that show, so [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] is a double-whammy of sentimentality for me.
Some people really hate the Keeping Up Appearances association, though.
I’ve loved this name for almost a year it seems. sounds classy, but you’re not trying too hard to be different, and it is so pretty, the way it sounds and the flower itself.
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] is a great name. [name_f]Flower[/name_f] names are great, and a refreshing alternative to a lot of the [name_f]Rose[/name_f] variations and [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and Rosmarie, but [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] is the winner for me.
Oh, that’s so great to hear! I love that you don’t think it sounds like it’s trying too hard - that is a concern I have. Thank you!! Gives me confidence!
I think I have to research the show (I don’t know it) - but I really love that you adore the name, and thanks for taking the time to share thoughts, it really helps!
I love it a lot. I recently heard of a NYC newborn named Delphinium, so [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] doesn’t really make me blink.
I know the Keeping Up Appearances association in the UK is a little strong, and probably negative, but yours is an American baby so it shouldn’t matter. By the time she’d be old enough to live in the UK for study abroad or work or whatever, if any of that came to pass, KUA will be like 35 years old! Lol. I think it’s fine.
I would be THRILLED to meet a baby [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], and I encourage you to use it!
PS-- Not sure how you feel about nicknames, but [name_f]Cindy[/name_f] would be an easy one. More of a stretch would be [name_f]Hittie[/name_f], [name_f]Hettie[/name_f], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]. [name_f]Cinthie[/name_f] would be cute, and unconventional too.
I think of the Keeping Up Appearances character too. I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, lol! I love the show; I used to watch it on [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] afternoons at my grandparent’s, so has a lot of good memories associated with it, but the character was not the best namesake, she was really annoying and snobby! I personally wouldn’t use it because of this, but I doubt many kids nowadays know about that show, so I wouldn’t worry too much!
I also wanted to add that if you go with [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], you should read T.S. [name_u]Eliot[/name_u]'s The Waste [name_m]Land[/name_m] as hyacinths show up in a beautiful verse towards the beginning:
"You gave me hyacinths first a year ago;
‘They called me the hyacinth girl.’
—Yet when we came back, late, from the [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] garden,
Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not
Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither
Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,
Looking into the heart of light, the silence.
Od’ und leer das Meer.”
I, too, think about the hilarious character from the [name_u]Brit[/name_u]-com “Keeping Up Appearances” but I love the name! You’re right, it’s unique in the sense that it is not a name you hear too often, and I love that it actually has sentimental value (a family name). Have you given thought to whether you would be calling her [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] regularly or if she would have a nickname?
I have an irrational prejudice against H names…in fact, I usually rather loathe them! That being said, [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] is the one and only H name on my long list. I just think it’s beautiful! I love the soft sounds, the C and the TH, the flow and movement of the name, the lovely botanical imagery… It’s a bit like [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f], but with a much better meaning. [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] has such a whimsical vibe, but is grounded and backed up by the plethora of more common flower names. I think it’s a beautiful, refreshing choice, and you should totally go for it.
I am thinking no nickname - I kind of love it as it stands in full and don’t think it’s too-too much of a mouthful … thank you so much for the positive input!
I like [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] as well, even though I think of the TV show. I’d probably use nn’s [name_f]Cindy[/name_f] or [name_f]Cinthie[/name_f], lovely suggestion:)
I quite like [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f]! I definitely think it’s usable, and it gets bonus points for being a family name for you.
And it doesn’t seem too out-there. Perhaps because it sounds somewhat similar to [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]?
