Hygge Female Names?

I’ve been reading with interest about the Danish concept of hygge; it’s certainly all over the internet and bookstores.

Most probably know all about it, but if not, it’s the idea of the simple pleasures of life, with a particular focus on the coziness of home. Evidently, having close friends or relatives over for a home-cooked meal, then playing a wholesome board game or watching a violent Scandinavian murder mystery with hand-knitted socks on, steaming glogg or hot chocolate in hand, a cat or pup or two and a roaring fire for warmth, while a winter storm rages epitomizes hygge.

It makes me laugh because it’s so much of what I’ve always savored in life, and of course, hygge has its limits (like world awareness, openness to otherness, difficult but necessary conversations, political activism, the stomach flu, and of course, death). But as a basic cozy way of living, I’m into it.

Being an ardent name enthusiast, I’ve begun wondering what are some perceptions of hygge names? I would take that to mean, above all, pleasant names, names without drama. [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] and [name_f]Bathsheba[/name_f], while fun, are clearly not Nordic socks and homemade lingonberry jam.

Perhaps names that feel home-spun. DIY’er names? Nothing too long or weird or angsty.

I’ll share a few of my names later, but would love to hear yours first.
Thanks!

My first choice is [name_f]Meg[/name_f].

It fits my idiosyncratic idea of hygge names:

Attractive without being sexual
Pretty without being fragile
Sturdy without being clunky
Shorter without being nominal
[name_f]Pleasant[/name_f] without being precious
Familiar without being used to oblivion
Comfortable without being like a ratty old nightie

[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]

I can get on board with this. Personally, I’ve always Loathed winter and being stuck inside when I lived in a place with real seasons, but I like the simplicity that you’re describing. And my idea of a perfect night involves reading in bed and eating brownie batter, so maybe that counts as hygge.

My first thought is [name_f]Liv[/name_f], strictly due to the Scandinavian association.

Also–single syllable, relatively spare ones like [name_u]Clare[/name_u] (esp. that spelling) or [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. Or [name_u]Kay[/name_u], which is the nickname of my dear aunt from the Midwest who used to bake me a birthday cake every year.

Or something warm and sweet like [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

What a great thread! I think perhaps names that have stood the test of tim, know who they are and have nothing to prove - such as those already suggested - [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Meg[/name_f] etc - would work.

Others like that are [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], (or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] with any nns - [name_f]Libby[/name_f] is nice), [name_f]Frances[/name_f]/ [name_f]Francie[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

Also some word names such as [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_f]Velvet[/name_f], [name_f]Bryony[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], Verily, [name_f]Winsome[/name_f].

I also tried to think of some unusual names: Araminty (because it makes me think of Araminty [name_m]Brown[/name_m] from National [name_f]Velvet[/name_f], who seems just this sort of home-centred, wise, calm, balanced, strong, peaceful person), lots of ‘wen’ names such as [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], [name_f]Anwen[/name_f], [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f].

Personally I think of two-syllable names with a few more consonants that you usually see, but soft consonants, ie
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
Carwen
[name_u]Carmen[/name_u]
[name_f]Sable[/name_f]
[name_f]Marja[/name_f]
Helmi
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]

And names that were already mentioned I agree with: [name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], [name_f]Branwen[/name_f]

I agree with @araminty on pretty much all points - fun thread!

The simple, classic names have a ‘cosy’ feel to me too - [name_u]Clare[/name_u], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f] - kind of classic literature names, really, so perhaps they lend themselves well because there is an image of curling up with these characters in a book.

There are also Scandi names and nature names that evoke that type of feeling for me. A few more that spring to my mind:

[name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Ida[/name_f], [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] (snow), [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u] (star), [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u].

[name_f]Jade[/name_f]
[name_f]Nessa[/name_f] (actually Scandinavian)
tessa
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u]
[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmie[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessia[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_u]Shay[/name_u]
[name_f]Una[/name_f]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Snow[/name_f]

[There are also Scandi names and nature names that evoke that type of feeling for me. A few more that spring to my mind:

[name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Ida[/name_f], [name_f]Lumi[/name_f] (snow), [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u] (star), [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_u]Kai[/name_u].[/QUOTE]

Oh, [name_f]Freya[/name_f] and [name_f]Ida[/name_f] and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], yes!

Interesting idea.

Names that feel cozy to me are, like many others said, mostly classics as well as names I associate with cozy people like grandmothers or just warm individuals, it’s much harder to think of boys names that fit this bill.

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Suzanne[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]

[name_u]Love[/name_u] this concept! [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], and [name_u]Gus[/name_u]

[name_f]Greta[/name_f]

[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Joanna[/name_f]

For me, I would say the tried and true, modern classic type names - [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Megan[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], etc. The kind you hear almost everywhere that are versatile and work for any personality type, but also have a slight creative sound to them.

As a Danish person it’s so fun how hygge has become a thing people talk about!

I would suggest:
[name_f]Karla[/name_f]
[name_f]Karen[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Tilde[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Lula[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_u]Malin[/name_u]
[name_f]Mae[/name_f]

Also–single syllable, relatively spare ones like [name_u]Clare[/name_u] (esp. that spelling) or [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. Or [name_u]Kay[/name_u], which is the nickname of my dear aunt from the Midwest who used to bake me a birthday cake every year.[/QUOTE]

I can see [name_u]Clare[/name_u] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f], but I especially find [name_u]Kay[/name_u] hygge! A nice calm name. Sometimes I get a little worn out by the dramatic names, including the ones I love.

I had never heard of this – 60 years old and Iearn something new every day! Hygge makes me think of nature names:

Girls- [name_u]Cedar[/name_u], [name_u]Oakley[/name_u], [name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Snow[/name_f], [name_u]Linden[/name_u], [name_f]Spring[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_u]Vale[/name_u], [name_u]Lake[/name_u], [name_u]Ocean[/name_u], [name_u]Bay[/name_u]
Guys - [name_m]Birch[/name_m], [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_m]Moss[/name_m]

I love [name_f]Araminta[/name_f], never heard Araminty. Very cool name (I’ve never seen National [name_f]Velvet[/name_f], figuring the horse dies!).

I think [name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] is super hygge sounding.

Good point. The idea of cozy not being simply domestic, but also related to classic reading/books.

In my mental hygge images, I never see tech, just books and fires and a lot of curling up.

I love the concept of hygge, and I believe naming our babies names that evoke peace is only ever a positive thing.

There will likely be lots of repeating among my personal hygge names, but the best ones deserve repeating, right?
