Hyphenated first & last names — Wayyy too much?

So this is all theoretical, but I don’t see any harm in looking ahead, as long as you accept that it might not happen this way.

So as you know, my style is hyphenated names. I think in most contexts my future kid will have a hyphenated last name, my current partner included.

So is it too much? It probably is but please be honest.

  • Wayyyyyy too much
  • A little too much
  • Unbiased
  • Pushing it
  • Not too much at all
  • Make it a double-barrel to fix the problem

Somewhere between wayyyy too much and a little too much. [name_m]Just[/name_m] too much

Wayyy too much. If you hyphenate their last name, don’t do it to their first

I think it depends on the length of the names. If it’s [name_u]Anne[/name_u]-[name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]-[name_m]Johnson[/name_m], in general it sounds fine but I don’t think all the hyphens look very aesthetically pleasing. If it’s AnneMarie [name_m]Smith[/name_m]-[name_m]Johnson[/name_m] or [name_u]Anne[/name_u] [name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]-[name_m]Johnson[/name_m] I think it’s fine

Seconding kipperbo1, I’d vote “too much” if that was an option. Not “wayyy”, but not “little” either. [name_m]Just[/name_m] too much.

I know a few people with double hyphens (first + last) and it doesn’t really seem like a problem to me. I wouldn’t do it myself just because hyphenated names aren’t really my jam but if you like them then I don’t see why not.

I know a M@ry-Ëliz@beth Shortsurname-Longsurname and it works fine for her. It definitely depends on the names themselves & how they flow.

It’s a bit much but it’s okay. I prefer if the names are on the shorter side or if they don’t have many syllables like [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_u]Marie[/name_u] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]-[name_f]Jewel[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]-[name_f]Angelica[/name_f] [name_m]Henderson[/name_m]-Willouby.
