Last night I realized that using color names for a large sibling group might be really cool. I think there is enough variety in names that describe color that one might be able to pull it off without being too tacky.
Here is a potential idea:
[name]Hazel[/name], [name]Cobalt[/name], [name]Roan[/name], & [name]Lilac[/name]
So, I was just hoping for some [name]Berry[/name] opinions! [name]Do[/name] you like this idea? Is the theme just subtle enough or do you find it tacky?
I generally find themes a bit tacky, I’m afraid, unless they’re so subtle it’s more of a family secret thing (like the meanings are related, or the stories from which they come are related). I would name a sibset in a story I was writing a theme like this, or I would use names like this for middles, but not real life siblings’ first names.
I don’t think the example you gave was particularly subtle, but the idea-- of a subtle link-- isn’t too bad. As long as it doesn’t make the children feel like they came as part of a boxed set.
It really depends.
This is very helpful,I know lol
I think it depends on the theme. Movie/book characters wouldn’t be to bad, considering there’s a broad spectrum that can be covered (as long as it’s not all in one movie/book)
I despise themes in which the sibset begin with all the same letter.
I don’t like the color theme idea at all. It’s not very subtle in my opinion, especially when you browse through the paint section at the hardware store.
I don’t like [name]Roan[/name] as a person name. [name]Roan[/name] is a horse color, and I know several horses named Roany! If you’re not in a horsey area, then you might be able to get away with it.
[name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Lilac[/name] would make a very adorable sibset! I like [name]Nat[/name]'s suggestions.
Subtle sibset themes are actually a GP of mine and while I wouldn’t call the sibset of [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Cobalt[/name], [name]Roan[/name] & [name]Lilac[/name] tacky exactly, (I’ve seen tackier ones) I don’t think that the theme is subtle at all.
Your example wasn’t really subtle as most people would clearly recognize most of those as being colors. Something that bold would be better off as a middle name imo. I like more subtle themes such as all names having the same origin.
I don’t like same letter sibsets. My older uncle and both aunts have the same initials SJW and then my mom and younger uncle (from my grandpa’s 2nd marriage) are WBW and RDW. It showed how seperate they were.
I prefer more subtle ones or bold ones for middles. I personally would love to use [name]Remus[/name] and [name]Romulus[/name] (or [name]Remy[/name] and [name]Roman[/name]) on twin boys but DH isn’t too into it. I like any “set” pair from history/mythology really ([name]Artemis[/name] and [name]Apollo[/name]).
DH likes using nature names as middles for girls. His picks are [name]Hacinthia[/name]/Hycinthia, [name]Snow[/name] and [name]Starr[/name] which are all tied to nature but not enough that its completely obvious is you saw [name]Blaire[/name] H. and [name]Lilith[/name] S. on forms or such.
I’m not too keen on a color name set, but don’t have any good reasoning for my dislike. I kind of like letter sets. The thought of siblings names [name]Oberon[/name], [name]Ondine[/name], and [name]Osias[/name]… or Ignatus, [name]Ianthe[/name], and [name]Isannah[/name]… seems lovely to me. But I can’t think of any other ‘sets’ I’d really like. Which is a problem for me, since nearly all my favorite girl names are floral. I hope I never have more than one daughter.
Me too! I would love to have
B/G: [name]Remy[/name] & [name]Romola[/name]
B/B: [name]Remy[/name] & [name]Roman[/name]
B/B or B/G: [name]Remy[/name] & [name]Romilly[/name]
I only like [name]Remus[/name] as a mn so I’d go with a filler fn, like [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Remus[/name] nn [name]Remy[/name] or [name]Wolf[/name]
Thank you all for the feedback! I figured that this theme was not really subtle, but I am glad to see that people do not find it extremely tacky either. I probably would only end up using a few of these names mixed with some others that were not colors. @sidura: I’m glad you like [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Lilac[/name] together! [name]Hazel[/name] is a long-time favorite and there is a good possibility that I will eventually end up using both names. I think the fact that both names have a nature association and a color association makes them less tacky for siblings.
I prefer more subtle links - [name]Sybille[/name] [name]Iolanthe[/name] and [name]Violet[/name] [name]Apolline[/name], for example, which both have ‘purpley’ English names and French double -ll names. But a colour theme could work if you were subtle enough. The problem with themes altogether is that it becomes harder with each child to find a name which fits the theme, but you love just as much as the first one…which is why Berries like to plan ahead I suppose Good luck.
If only the other halves would go for it. Mine said if he has to pick a set of brothers he wants to use [name]Dante[/name] and [name]Virgil[/name] from the Devil [name]May[/name] Cry video game series.
I agree with this. I think most of the names you suggested are fairly obvious but there are so many options out there for great color names that aren’t [name]Ginger[/name], [name]Scarlett[/name], [name]Violet[/name], or [name]Bluebell[/name] that I’m sure you could find something great.
Other more subtle color names include:
[name]Bianca[/name], [name]Hunter[/name], [name]Kelly[/name], [name]Tanner[/name], [name]Amber[/name], [name]Raven[/name], [name]Blaine[/name], [name]Devin[/name], [name]Farley[/name], [name]Bowie[/name], [name]Keira[/name], [name]Rory[/name], [name]Sherlock[/name], [name]Orrin[/name], and [name]Phyllis[/name].
My daughter had a friend in high school named [name]Amber[/name]. Her little sister was [name]Scarlett[/name]. It didn’t occur to me that they were both color names until I found out their brother was named [name]Teal[/name].
We also had neighbor’s whose kids were [name]Portia[/name] ([name]Porsche[/name]) and [name]Shelby[/name] (b) - both “car” names.
Bonnielyn - it’s too bad they choose such an obvious color name like [name]Teal[/name]. I think it’s a bit harder for boys but they could have kept that theme going without anyone really noticing. Also… your neighbors need to name their next child [name]Lincoln[/name] alla [name]Lincoln[/name] [name]Belle[/name] [name]Shepherd[/name] who basically was named after a car.
