I always said I wouldn't do two middles, but

I currently have 3 little girls: [name]Molly[/name] [name]Clare[/name] (12), [name]Piper[/name] [name]Shannon[/name] (6), and [name]Cora[/name] [name]Noelle[/name] (9 months). Needless to say, we were shocked to find out when [name]Cora[/name] was 3 months old that we were expecting again. And it’s a boy this time, too! So I need a brother name. I would really like to give him a family name, though none of my girls have family names. Is that OK or should I keep everyone non-family?

The second issue is that I have a family name that I love and am almost ready to commit to. But it has two middle names. We have taken a lot of care to make sure that all of our girls had very simple, straightforward names since our last name is a tongue twister. But there are 3 family names that I really want to use and don’t want to drop any of them. So I want some opinions: Is it weird to have one child with 2 middle names and everyone else with 1? And what do you think of our name: [name]Clay[/name] [name]Edward[/name] [name]Vance[/name] J********? Our last name sounds a lot like “[name]Jefferson[/name].” Does it go with our girls’ names? If we use all of the names, we actually will have him named after all 4 of me and DH’s grandfathers, and I sort of love that  I also sort of love the alliteration of [name]Cora[/name] & [name]Clay[/name] for my Irish twins. Thanks in advance for opinions / insights!

Congrats!! I really don’t think it’s a big deal for him to have two middles even though your girls only have one, particularly since the gender is different and all of his names will be honoring family. I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing this is common for the first boy in a family. My daughter has a double middle, and I doubt that subsequent children will - it just worked out that way for various reasons. I think [name]Clay[/name] goes very well with his sisters and I like the C’s for your Irish twins

I like it!!! It sounds like you’re making the most of this little surprise boy! Enjoy!

Wow, [name]Clay[/name] [name]Edward[/name] [name]Vance[/name] is so handsome! I think it is perfectly fine for this little one to have two middle names, and family names, especially.

I am all about using family names, and given your situation of having a boy after 3 girls, I would think nothing of having 2 middle names. [name]One[/name] of our children has 2 middle names and the others do not and its just normal to him and the others, nobody is upset that they have or dont have a different number etc. I think [name]Clay[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] work fine as siblings, and [name]Clay[/name] fits right in with your other names. Good luck! [name]One[/name] of my friends had her 2nd son the day before her 1st sons birthday! Lots of work, but they are 9 and 8 now (will be 10 and 9 in [name]December[/name]) and are best friends and its nice because they are into all the same things so finding family activities are easy.

I think [name]Clay[/name] [name]Edward[/name] [name]Vance[/name] sounds very nice, distinguished, handsome, and a name that will age well. I would think nothing of him having two middle names. [name]How[/name] often are they used anyway? But like someone else said, with the gender being different and this being your first son after so many girls it really shouldn’t be a big deal. And with first sons espeially it seems that family gets honored a lot. I don’t think it should be a great deal. It’s a very nice name I would say go for it.

I like [name]Clay[/name] [name]Edward[/name] [name]Vance[/name] a lot, and [name]Molly[/name], [name]Piper[/name], [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Clay[/name] make a lovely sibling group!

I really wouldn’t worry about the double middle name thing. They don’t all have to match! And it’s OK that the others are non-family names too. Really, if you love it, go for it!

That is a very handsome name! I definitely think you should go for it and agree with what others have said! He is your first boy! It is quite fitting to use family names for him. I also like the “C” theme for your Irish twins! Congratulations!

OK, one more question: I recently had someone suggest that [name]Clay[/name] and [name]Clayton[/name] are now being used as girl names. With 3 older sisters, I want to avoid any name that might be taken for a girl. Has anyone heard of these being used for girls? Does [name]Clay[/name] sound feminine to anyone?

I have never heard [name]Clay[/name] or [name]Clayton[/name] being used for a girl. Definitely sound totally boy to me.

[name]Clay[/name] itself isn’t a feminine name at all. I haven’t heard it being used for girls either. What I do hear is it sometimes being used as a nickname for girls named Cléa.

I’m all for two middle names, obviously. I think [name]Clay[/name] [name]Edward[/name] [name]Vance[/name] is great. I was going to suggest [name]Clay[/name] [name]Evan[/name] as a way of using only one middle name, but then I realised how similar it was to “clay oven”. Not so great of a suggestion.

[name]Love[/name] [name]Clay[/name] [name]Edward[/name] [name]Vance[/name]. Very handsome name!
