I just met a little girl named Abcde…pronounced [name_m]Ab[/name_m]-city. I pray her parents had the decency to give the poor child a real middle name.
I have no words.
That’s awful. I respect their decision in naming their daughter because it is their decision, but still. That is something I would never do to my kid… that poor little girl. At least she can always go by [name_u]Abby[/name_u]?
[name_m]Aren[/name_m]'t modern baby namers wonderful? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you hear the sarcasm telepathically?
That is quite possibly the worst name I have ever seen.
I don’t know…could be a nice tribute to the ancient Phoenicians for inventing the alphabet. (yeah…that’s it)
Unfortunately I have heard of that before.
I don’t want to believe this is true!! That should be illegal.
Never heard it pronounced that way before, I’ve always heard ab-sih-dee. But yeah… such a trashy looking name, it screams to me, “HEY, LOOK AT ME! My mommy passed Kindergarten and now she’s trying to show the world how ‘smart’ she is!”
heartbreaking. could that really be true?
Pretty sure this is an urban legend, just like Lemonjello and Orangello. I seriously doubt you met a kid with this name, but if you did… I agree, it’s terrible.

Ditto this. Abcde is up there with Shithead (pronounce Shith-eed, of course) and La-a.
Does this convince anyone yet? Police seeking missing female: Masuno 05-11-06
Well there really girls named Abcde. I have heard it before. I think I saw it on babynames.com. In a blog post? If you google Abcde name, you can learn more about it. I dislike this name.
I’ve also heard this one before. Are you in [name_u]Utah[/name_u] by any chance?
this is why other countries have naming rules.
we arent free to do whatever we want, we are free to do the right thing and this most definitely ridiculous paternal frivolity
A friends older sister works for a social service looking into child abuse and neglect and a name that has recurred twice in her line of work is Abcde, pronounced the same way.
That probably isn’t the case in this circumstance, but it’s still thought-provoking, isn’t it?
I’ve met an Abcde at a play group once! Most people on Nameberry kept telling me it’s just an urban legend but unfortunately it’s not. I don’t understand why parents would choose that name though!
I seriously also met one recently. She’s about 8 years old. My mouth dropped because I also thought it was an urban legend name, but nope. They really do exist.
