I can't narrow these down!

Hi, I’m new to this website! I’m expecting a boy, and anticipating having at least one more child in the future, but likely only one more. Since I like to plan ahead, I’m trying to lock down a name for this baby and two names (one for a girl, one for a boy) for a future baby. We had already thought of a single and uncontested girl name, [name_f]Kennedy[/name_f], before we found out we were having a boy. So if our second child is a girl, we are so far planning to use [name_f]Kennedy[/name_f].

I was at a loss for boy names before we found Babynamegenie and, after making a few polls of our own and not coming up with anything we liked enough to use, we scrolled through the other polls and noticed a few existing sibling sets for brothers that other people on the site had used for their older kids. These were some pairs that we liked: [name_m]Asher[/name_m] & [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m] & [name_m]Anderson[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] & [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Logan[/name_m] & [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], [name_m]Makai[/name_m] & [name_m]Carver[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] & [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] & [name_m]Jude[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] & [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Spencer[/name_m] & [name_m]Connor[/name_m], and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] & [name_m]Spencer[/name_m].

The first name in each pair is an option for the baby boy we are currently expecting. The second name is for a hypothetical second son. If our second child is a girl instead, the second name is replaced with [name_f]Kennedy[/name_f].

[name_m]Asher[/name_m] seems safe to us and we like it, so it is a strong contender. I also especially like that [name_m]Callum[/name_m] is Scottish. I really love how unique and handsome [name_m]Makai[/name_m] and [name_m]Carver[/name_m] are, but because they are so unique, I wonder if it would be weird knowing there are two other little boys out there named [name_m]Makai[/name_m] and [name_m]Carver[/name_m].

Every time we try to narrow this list down a little bit more, I feel like I can’t let any of the names go. Most of them are on equal planes to me. And I’m worried that if I were to narrow them down to a set of two names, I would end up feeling unsatisfied with the pair.

So I was wondering your opinions. What are the merits of these names in your eyes? Is there any way to narrow 17 names down to 2 that we will be satisfied with? I’m not opposed to some of these being mixed and matched if you feel like something else works better.

Thank you commenters in advance!

First of all,Congratulations on your son and your future daughter!Best wishes to all of you!

Secondly,let’s get down to names!

[name_m]Asher[/name_m] means “[name_f]Happy[/name_f]”!It is a great name for a little boy,and although becoming more popular,it is still a cute name with a great meaning,no crude nickname potential, and will suit any personality type (Masculine and less masculine boys). It can also be shortened!A possible nickname would be [name_u]Ash[/name_u]!

[name_m]Callum[/name_m] has a great feel to it.It’s familiar but not over the top popular. Plus it can be shortened to [name_u]Cal[/name_u]!

I like [name_m]Isaac[/name_m],[name_u]Logan[/name_u],[name_u]Spencer[/name_u],and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m],but I feel as if there might be a few of those little boys running around  However,I can see how they would speak to you, they are all really cute.

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is cute but becoming very popular :frowning:

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is nice,I know a couple kids named [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] though. But maybe that is just my town?

[name_m]Carver[/name_m] is not my favorite, but it is very masucline. If you want a masculine name, then this would be the way to go.

Now [name_m]Makai[/name_m]…[name_m]Makai[/name_m] is really cute!I reaaaalllyyyy love this name!It is unique and sounds like that kid that everyone wants to be friends with. It is so different that your son would be the only one named [name_m]Makai[/name_m],which as I see it,is a major plus.It is,out of your awesome list, easily my favorite!

In the end…I think they are all absolutely precious. They are all names I adore and your son would be lucky to be named any of them!

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Ford[/name_m] and [name_u]Carter[/name_u] or [name_m]Woodrow[/name_m] and [name_u]Mckinley[/name_u]

I know what you mean about not wanting to let go of some names!

  • You could give each child 2 middle names in order to hold on to more names.
  • As far as knowing there is another [name_m]Carver[/name_m] and [name_m]Makai[/name_m] out there, it sounds like it will bother you. You could mix it up and go with something like [name_m]Carver[/name_m] and [name_m]Bennett[/name_m].
  • I also think that by the time you are looking for baby #2’s name, your tastes may have changed or a new name might come into the mix. Maybe don’t plan TOO far ahead and instead focus on the little one you are expecting now.

Ideas for baby #1:
[name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_m]Makai[/name_m]

My votes go to [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] as a sibling pair. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] [name_m]Callum[/name_m]?

Thank you for the feedback!
@perfectlyimperfect Thanks for your opinions! I get what you’re saying about names like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Logan[/name_u], and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] being very popular right now. I agree that [name_m]Makai[/name_m] is very cute and I’d love to use it as it is a less common name. But maybe it’s too uncommon?
@18_25
I’m not really looking for any new suggestions as I’m having as hard a time as it is narrowing down the ones that I have. But thank you for stopping in! [name_u]Carter[/name_u] is cute.
@cactusgram
Thanks for the response! It was very helpful. We’re probably going to only use one middle name, because my family has always had one middle name, but thank you for the idea. I think you’re right that I would feel weird using both [name_m]Makai[/name_m] and [name_m]Carver[/name_m]. I prefer [name_m]Makai[/name_m] slightly, so I think it’s time to strike [name_m]Carver[/name_m] from the list.
We are ideally planning on having a second child in the year or two after our first son is born (however, we recognize that it might not work out that way). I might change my mind about certain names, but I would be more comfortable having a name or two picked out and in my back pocket just in case.
I really love the suggestion of [name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_m]Makai[/name_m]!

More feedback would really be appreciated from any other posters! Thank you!

[name_m]Makai[/name_m] and [name_m]Carver[/name_m] are lovely! I also like [name_m]Makai[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]. [name_u]Jude[/name_u] is nice too…

I really like [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] as a sibset, and I think [name_m]Asher[/name_m] would work with [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] as well. I love [name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_m]Makai[/name_m], maybe with [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] looking through your list my favorites are:

[name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]
[name_m]Makai[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]

Sibling combos I think go well with each other:

[name_m]Makai[/name_m] & [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]
[name_m]Makai[/name_m] & [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] & [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] & [name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] & [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m] & [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]

My favorite with mn combos:

[name_m]Makai[/name_m] [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] & [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] [name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Makai[/name_m] & [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Makai[/name_m] & [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]

My 6-month old is [name_m]Callum[/name_m] and I’m loving it. I think it’s great that it means “dove”–not a typically masculine association but it fits our peace-maker well! If I were going to pick his sibling’s name from your list, I’d use [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] or [name_m]Connor[/name_m] (even though I normally dislike matchy siblings, this sounds really good to me).

[name_m]Callum[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] & [name_m]Connor[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] & [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]

(P.S. Neither of those is our son’s middle name, so you wouldn’t be copying us!)

I like [name_m]Callum[/name_m] and [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]!

I would keep:

[name_m]Asher[/name_m] & [name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] & [name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] & [name_u]Jude[/name_u] - 2nd fave
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] & [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] - fave combo

Would you consider [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] together? I love those, and they go together well. [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] and [name_u]Theo[/name_u] would be cute.

I love the names you have! But just know it’s ok to change your mind and your list with each baby. Chances are by the time you have your next baby you will have heard other names that you really lik too!! So I’d say choose the boy name you love most this time, even if you need to wait and see your baby before you decide.
My personal favorites are
[name_m]Asher[/name_m]
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m] and
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
