What were the names your parents almost chose for you? Maybe some picks your other parent vetoed? If you had been the opposite sex, did your parents have any names chosen?

My mom loved the names [name]Amelia[/name] (after [name]Earhart[/name]), [name]Isobel[/name] (but I’m not sure which spelling), and [name]Stephanie[/name]. I am a [name]Katherine[/name], after my mom’s mom though she’s with a C, and middle [name]Anne[/name], after my mom’s middle, though she is [name]Ann[/name].
I fluctuate between really liking the family connection and wishing my mom and dad had gone a little more ‘out there’… I definitely wouldn’t change my name now (even though I think almost every tween girl wants to change their name at some point) and i really like having a longer name with nickname options. But it is fun to think what if…
I love [name]Amelia[/name] and it’s on my short list (and top 2 for the letter A). I also adore [name]Isobel[/name] and would use it for a girl of my own, but it’s more popular than I would like. [name]Both[/name] of those names I really could picture myself being, especially [name]Amelia[/name] but I’m not sure if that’s just because it shares vowel sounds with [name]Katie[/name] so it sounds a little more familiar. I don’t picture myself as a [name]Stephanie[/name] and don’t care for the ‘stuffy’ sound of [name]Steph[/name] (though I like [name]Annie[/name], also again probably bc it’s like my middle name).
I’m adopted and my parents only got 48 hours notice that i was available before taking me home, so they hadn’t been thinking of names very much- I’m not sure what boy names they liked other than my older brother’s name [name]William[/name].

Anyone else want to share what names they could have been? I was impressed with my mom’s choices of [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Isobel[/name] considering how popular they are now compared to almost 28 years ago! She was ahead of the curve with that (not as much with [name]Stephanie[/name], hehe).

My parents’ finalists for my name was [name]Zoe[/name] and [name]Amanda[/name], which would have worked out okay, since from [name]Amanda[/name] I could get one of my all time favorite names, [name]Amy[/name]. I was born in [name]Washington[/name], D.C., and the names were ranked 58 and 64, respectively.

My mother also really wanted to name me [name]Florence[/name], but some movie had come out in the mid nineties that made her unable to call her little girl [name]Flo[/name]. I wish she had gone ahead and named me that so I could’ve gone by the more intrepid nns [name]Flora[/name] or [name]Ren[/name]. Another name they considered was [name]Alice[/name], after my mom’s great aunt (who took in homeless teen girls and trained them to be nurses in the Great Depression- brilliant namesake), but my mom thought it was too old fashioned. And alternatives just didn’t occur to them, like [name]Allison[/name] or [name]Alyssa[/name] (with the former I’d be [name]Sonny[/name], with the latter [name]Alys[/name]).

If my younger brother had been a girl, the only names my parents were able to agree on was [name]Haley[/name]. I’m really glad he turned out to be [name]Mitchell[/name], or else my parents would have two daughters- one with a name pronounced [name]Rainy[/name] and another daughter named [name]Haley[/name] ([name]Rainy[/name] and Hail-ee). [name]Even[/name] without a sibling name that is a play on words, I get asked if my brother’s name is [name]Stormy[/name]. I tell them, “No, it’s [name]Cloudy[/name].” Most of the time, they don’t sense my sarcasm.

I’ve disliked my name for as long as I can remember, and my mom said that knowing my personality she would have picked [name]Lucy[/name] or [name]Amelia[/name] (neither names occured to her during pregnancy. Sigh…)

If I would have been a boy my name was going to be [name]Frankie[/name]. The other girl option that my parents had for me was [name]Roseanne[/name]. They finally decided on [name]Jamee[/name]. I like my name and I’m glad that I was a girl!

If I was a boy I would have been [name]Timothy[/name]. Other choices for a girl were:
Dad: [name]Lauren[/name]
Mum: [name]Georgie[/name]

I would have preferred either of these than my actual name!

I was almost an [name]Ellery[/name]

If I had been a boy my name would have been [name]August[/name], [name]Xander[/name], or [name]Graham[/name]. [name]Both[/name] [name]August[/name] and [name]Xander[/name] have made my lists. The other girl names were [name]Eleanore[/name], [name]Anya[/name], [name]Corinne[/name], or [name]Corinna[/name]. I am a girl, named [name]Cecilia[/name]. My little sister is named [name]Corinne[/name]. I love my name, and would never want to change it.

I’m amazed at how fashion-forward many Berries’ moms are. [name]August[/name], [name]Graham[/name], [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Ellery[/name], and [name]Isobel[/name]? Wow.

If I had been a boy, I would have been [name]John[/name]. Snooze. They were originally planning on [name]Garret[/name], but they told everyone and everyone called me that and then my mom got tired of it. [name]Garret[/name] is a good name name though. I approve.

There weren’t really alternative girl names. They always knew I would be [name]Kate[/name] if I were a girl.

I was due on [name]Christmas[/name], and if I were born then, I would have been named [name]Holly[/name]. I was also [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Emily[/name], but then my parents found out how popular it was, statisticaly. If I were a boy, I would have been a [name]Thomas[/name].

My mom still has naming regret, wishing she would’ve named me [name]Grace[/name]. I’m so glad she didn’t though, as I dislike the name a lot. Sounds too much like grease for my taste. I’m glad she went with her maiden name for me instead.

I’m a [name]Margaret[/name]…a very last-minute-decision [name]Margaret[/name]! My parents were dead set on [name]Emily[/name] as their girl’s name (I was born in 1991), but changed it for some reason at the last minute. And I’m so glad. They also liked:

Girl: [name]Landry[/name], [name]Kayleigh[/name]
Boy: [name]Trevor[/name], [name]Graham[/name], [name]Benjamin[/name]

I’m [name]Molly[/name], but I was going to be called [name]Alice[/name]. My gran decided to call me molly when my mum was pregnant becasue she didn’t want to call be bump.
Boy: [name]James[/name]
Girl:[name]Alice[/name]/[name]Lily[/name] (Dad didn’t like lily beacuse his nan was called that}

My dad picked my name–[name]Aurora[/name]. I was born in the mid-'80’s, so it was a more daring choice then than it is now, and my mom had to warm up to it. At first she thought it was too “out-there.” She preferred [name]Savannah[/name]. I love my name, and while I’m glad to see more people using it, I hope it won’t get mega-popular!
If I had been a boy, I would have been [name]Barnabas[/name]–also my dad’s pick. Three years after I was born, my baby brother got it. And [name]Barnabas[/name] still hasn’t made the Top 1000!
(Yes, my mom got to pick some names later. I have seven siblings!)

[name]Born[/name] in 1992. My mum was sure I was going to be a girl and had my name ([name]Emily[/name] - which i love) picked out for ages. They also like [name]Amelia[/name], but didn’t like the flow with my surname. If I was a boy, I may have been [name]Simon[/name], which neither of them really like lol! so they would have changed it.

My mum regrets my middle name, as she only found out my grandma’s second middle ([name]Lucina[/name]) after I was born. I plan on using [name]Lucina[/name] as a middle name for my first daughter.

My mom wanted to name me [name]Eva[/name]. When I was a kid I thought it was an awful name and was very glad they didn’t pick it.

My dad suggested the name [name]Starlight[/name] [name]Blue[/name]. Hippie. :stuck_out_tongue: Really glad that one got nixed.

If I had been a boy, I would have been [name]Austin[/name]. I would have been ahead of my time in the late 70’s, but wow, is that name ever done-to-death today.

Ultimately, they came to their senses and chose a great name.

I was almost a [name]Tiffany[/name]. Had I been a boy, my name would have been [name]Kevin[/name] after my father.

Had I been a boy a would of been [name]Ryan[/name]. Other possibilities on the girls list were [name]Laura[/name], [name]Ella[/name] and [name]Nicole[/name]. [name]Nicole[/name] ending up being my middle as it was my dad’s favourite name but mum didn’t like it. Wish I had of been [name]Laura[/name], but so glad I’m not [name]Ella[/name], it’s beyond popular in my school.

I was almost a [name]Kristy[/name]. My mom named my twin sister, and I’m the only one out of us four sisters to be named by our dad. He fluctuated between [name]Kristy[/name] and the name I was given. When Mom gave my twin a very '80s name with the initial K, Dad decided not to do the “twin-name” thing and to give me my own name with its own style and sound and initial. It was very nice and thoughtful of him, but I do wish he had stuck with [name]Kristy[/name]. My name is so horribly dated–very ‘50s and middle-aged (no connection to my user name)–and I never did meet another child with it. Though some of my friends’ moms had it. :frowning: It has grown on me though.

I was almost [name]Rebecca[/name] [name]Rochelle[/name] nn [name]Becca[/name]…other options were [name]Marissa[/name] and [name]Mellissa[/name]. My mom also quite liked [name]Kelly[/name], but it was never really an option because it rhymes with my last name. I ended up [name]Alyssa[/name] [name]Danielle[/name], fn after actress [name]Alyssa[/name] [name]Milano[/name], who’s character on a tv show my mom used to love to watch. I love that connection to it because it meant alot to my mom:) [name]Danielle[/name] was just a filler…

If i had been a boy, i would have likely been [name]Anthony[/name] [name]Nicholas[/name]…my mom held onto that name for a son for so long (she did have a boy before me, but long story short my dad named him after himself). My mom also liked [name]Chad[/name] for a boy…

Overall, I’m extremely glad I got the name I was given. It suits me, I feel, and i couldn’t imagine being anything else. As far as the other names on the list, I don’t like [name]Marissa[/name] at all (it was given to a cousin later), and [name]Mellissa[/name] is alright…and I’m not too fond of [name]Kelly[/name]… I don’t really know the naming trends from when i was born, but I know [name]Alyssa[/name] definitely wasn’t a popular choice at all. [name]Marissa[/name] and [name]Mellissa[/name] I think really were. And [name]Kelly[/name]…I think that fits better in the 80s, not the 90s when i was born. So looks like mom was ahead of the curve with my name:)

When my parents got married, they decided their first daughter would be named [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Cynthia[/name] after their mothers and their first son would be named [name]Charles[/name] [name]Dominic[/name] after their fathers (although [name]Dominic[/name] was actually my maternal grandfather’s middle name since my mom’s brother was already a junior). However, by the time Mom finally got pregnant, two of my cousins were already named [name]Charles[/name], so they scrapped that idea for their boy choice. Mom’s second choice was [name]James[/name] after my father, but Dad didn’t really like the idea of a junior, so he preferred [name]Thomas[/name], his father’s middle name. I’m not sure which one they would have ultimately chosen had I been a boy since they never did have a son, but my mom sometimes refers to the baby she miscarried as J.D. for [name]James[/name] [name]Dominic[/name].

Names in the running were [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Wyatt[/name], and [name]Benjamin[/name]. If I were a girl, I’d be [name]Kathryn[/name], called [name]Kate[/name]…and I am! lol =)
