I DESPERATELY need help

Thought we’d decided on [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] for our third boy.

But I just heard my husband say it and it made me feel sick.

I like it as a whole, but I don’t like the sound [name_m]Cass[/name_m] (or as a nickname) and I REALLY don’t like the [name_m]Ian[/name_m] sound.
Together as a whole name they seem fine but now we’re at the point of saying it out loud to test it and it just feels all wrong. I also know the nickname [name_m]Cass[/name_m] is inevitable, and I just don’t like it.

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband really liked this and because I said yes a few weeks ago has grown attached. He’s pretty put out by me saying that it felt wrong today.

I’ve seen every boy name 3 times or more. I’ve read everything, looked for inspiration elsewhere. Done everything I can think of and just can’t find a name that stands out to me.

And I’ve already been on here before asking about a brother name for [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m].

What can I do??!!

Hmm would [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] nickname [name_m]Kip[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Cass[/name_m] solve the problem?
With brothers maybe…

[name_m]Evander[/name_m]
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Fletcher[/name_m]
[name_m]Booker[/name_m]
[name_m]Archer[/name_m]
[name_m]Watson[/name_m]
[name_m]Newton[/name_m]
Florian/Dorian (still has the ian sound though)

[name_m]Cassian[/name_m] is a beautiful name—maybe you just need a different nickname? On my list I have [name_m]Case[/name_m], [name_m]Casey[/name_m], [name_m]Cash[/name_m], Caz, and [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] as nickname options

If you’re looking for other suggestions, you’ve maybe heard of all of these but sometimes a name will hit you one way one time and another way another time! I thought these fit well with your other boys’ names without straying too far from [name_m]Cassian[/name_m]

Callahan/Calihan nn [name_m]Cal[/name_m], [name_m]Lanny[/name_m]
[name_m]Cashel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Cash[/name_m]
[name_m]Cassander[/name_m] nn [name_m]Sander[/name_m], [name_m]Anders[/name_m], [name_m]Case[/name_m], [name_m]Cash[/name_m], [name_m]Kit[/name_m] (still have the [name_m]Cass[/name_m] but no more [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and with different nickname options)
Cillian/Killian (still have the [name_m]Ian[/name_m] but no [name_m]Cass[/name_m] and somewhat nickname-proof)
Colson/Coleson nn [name_m]Cole[/name_m], [name_m]Sonny[/name_m]
[name_m]Cullen[/name_m]
[name_m]Cameron[/name_m] nn [name_m]Cam[/name_m]

That’s tough! I agree with previous posters that perhaps the nicknames [name_m]Kip[/name_m], [name_m]Cash[/name_m], or [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] would make [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] a viable option for you.

Here are a few names that continue the “n” trend:
[name_m]Thoren[/name_m] (I really like this one with your other boys’ names)
[name_m]Sorin[/name_m]

How about a classic like [name_m]George[/name_m] to complement the older siblings? It’s classic and common but not too popular

  1. Keep [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] on the backburner. Don’t dismiss it completely, see if you come back round to it, see if taking a break from thinking about it helps

  2. Take a break from naming in general - if you have time, give yourself the space to step away from trying to find the perfect name, concentrate on other aspects of prepping for a baby - then come back to names with fresh eyes

3) A couple of random suggestions, based on [name_m]Cassian[/name_m]:

Would pronouncing it CASH-un help at all? It’s an acceptable pronunciation, and then it gets rid of the sounds you don’t like. A reasonable nickname would be [name_m]Cash[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Cass[/name_m].

Otherwise, let’s revisit more ideas:

[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] nn [name_m]Kip[/name_m] immediately came to mind. continuing with the same “a” sound I also like [name_m]Nash[/name_m], [name_m]Dallas[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_m]Calloway[/name_m] and [name_m]Callahan[/name_m] nn [name_m]Cal[/name_m] for you.

I agree with the above, take a break from Cassian and names generally, and let your mind have time to settle and refresh, and also work things out while you’re not forcing it to. It sounds like Cassian probably isn’t the name - if the two sounds are off putting - but maybe just pop on back burner for now. I do like the Cash-un suggestion for you.

It’s probably not the right time for names but with Griffen and Lincoln, do you like Griff & Linc?

You might also like Lucian - LOO-Shen?

Otherwise:

Christopher nn Kit
Caspian
Casper
Jasper

[name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] are called [name_m]Fin[/name_m] and [name_m]Link[/name_m].
I didn’t like the sound of grif at the time and [name_m]Fin[/name_m] was a great alternative and really suits him.
There’s no better end of [name_m]Cassian[/name_m].

I agree taking a break would probably help but we may have as little as 5 weeks left (some complications) but really he could come any time and could have for weeks now. It’s made the whole naming process much more stressful.
I know from previous experience that I am not in a position after birth to be making these decisions so really wanted to have it sorted out.

A lot of your suggestions were on the list to pick from. [name_m]Rowan[/name_m], [name_m]Cillian[/name_m] and [name_m]Brennan[/name_m] made it to final 4 along with [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] but with none really filling that simple nickname thing I love, he picked his favorite and I agreed.

Something new I like from suggestions on this post is [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] NN [name_m]Mac[/name_m]. But I’m not sure how well it actually fits with siblings or for a young boy in Australia. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though we are [name_f]Irish[/name_f] in ancestry.

I just over think everything at this point.
Thank you all for your help and support.
Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

I think it’s encouraging that you’re still finding names to like from lists! (And, FWIW, I think [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] nn [name_m]Mac[/name_m] works great with your other children.)

I completely understand not wanting to make a decision immediately post-birth. How long do you have in Australia to officially register? Is there a possibility of taking him home first to alleviate the immediate pressure to find a name? That might allow you to have a bit of a break and sit with a shortlist to decide what fits him best.

Best of luck! [name_f]Baby[/name_f] will no doubt have a great name however you choose

I feel your pain I had something similar naming my third daughter.
In the end I wrote out all the name combinations that I loved, got each one absolutely perfect so that once she was born I had a list that I would be happy picking any name off. I too am not good at important decisions after birth! It worked in the end I had 20 perfect name options I loved and we choose one off the list 2 days after she was born. It wasn’t the way I wanted to do it but sometimes you just need more time!
I’d keep [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] on your list you never know, you may fall back in love. Also for what its worth as an Aussie, I think [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] is a great name I wouldn’t think bat an eyelid at that choice.

all the best!

I know a [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] in [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]Zealand[/name_m] which is culturally basically just Australia 2.0 ! These days kids have such unique names that [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] would easily work and even be a more normal name

if you like [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], maybe you’d like [name_m]Conrad[/name_m]? just saw this name in another post and thought it a possible alternative.

similar ones that fit the vibe but possibly more wearable where you are (which I can’t speak to as I’m american) could be [name_m]Declan[/name_m], [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], [name_m]Tristian[/name_m], and [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] - or find another name that fits the nn [name_m]Mac[/name_m] like [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] or [name_f]Mackenzie[/name_f] ?

I totally understand wanting to choose the name beforehand! maybe try secretly picking a name in your head and try it out for a day or two without telling anyone, or with your OH and see how you feel saying it. Good luck!

Agree with [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] suggestion. Its so similar in sound to [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] that it could be an easy switch for your husband but I think youd be less likely to get [name_m]Cas[/name_m] or [name_f]Cassie[/name_f] or [name_m]Ian[/name_m] as nicknames for some reason. The p in there and ocean name reference seem to give it its own direction. And i like [name_m]Kip[/name_m] as a nickname although i only knew that as a nn for [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], which i also really like. I also like [name_m]Casey[/name_m] as an alternative. I like [name_m]Callahan[/name_m] or [name_m]Callister[/name_m] too.

It sounds like you have to take Cassian out of the running. You gave it the best chance it could get, but it’s not working for you.

Gaelic names feel very fitting with your older two sons. Cormac is great. It was on our short list for our son. I also know of a primary school aged Mac who is ‘just’ Mac here in Australia. Completely normal name. Cormac feels on par with Griffin in terms of familiarity. I would give Cormac a chance. See if it grows on you.

Reminds me of this recent thread with names similar in style to Cormac and your final four. You might find something you like.

My only other advice would be to revisit any old lists or posts to see if something strikes you anew. The name we ended up choosing for our son had never been on my list before. It was my husband who suggested it and while I initially dismissed it, I found myself thinking about the name as the weeks went on. I think I had to see the name a few times before I could give it much thought. By the time our baby arrived, it felt like the right choice. I wish you the best with your decision.

I like [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] so much better than [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] and I think [name_m]Mac[/name_m] fits a lot better with [name_m]Fin[/name_m] & [name_m]Link[/name_m]!

[name_m]Cassian[/name_m] feels soft/fussy comparatively to [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] & [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]

Naming is hard. Good luck!
