I don't want my kids to be left out!

Hello! My 3 year old son is named [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] (middle name [name_u]Page[/name_u]) and I have twin girls on the way…

For the girls we were thinking of [name_m]Harlan[/name_m] and [name_f]Azure[/name_f] but have some questions.

Are [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] and [name_m]Harlan[/name_m] too similar in their sound? Also, are you leaving one child out if two out of three have names starting with an “a”?

Other name ideas for the girls include: [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], [name_u]Lake[/name_u], [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_m]Joplin[/name_m], and Marling (same potential problems as [name_m]Harlan[/name_m]).

Are the names too similar? Should I avoid the two A names? Should I just start over with the girl names? Which names go best together?

Give me some insight!

I love your son’s name.
I personally would aim for each of my kids to have a different first initial, and nothing matchy.
[name_m]Harlan[/name_m] sounds very similar to [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], and both have consecutive ARL. I wouldn’t do it. Too similar for my taste.

Also consider whether or not you want your daughters’ names to sound unisex/tomboyish or masculine.
I go by the boy’s name as a guidline. I consider it to sound all boy, but this site is acting like it is Unisex because of the orange color. Similar to [name_u]Marlow[/name_u] I guess.
Anyways, my point is that I would not want my daughters to have more masculine names than my son, because that could be awkward for him and your daughters, but specifically for your son. That is just my opinion.
Some people like alliteration, I am not one of them, but if you like it, then give your kids all A first names. If you go that route, I advise you try to find A names that sounds quite different on the first syllable and number of syllables each name has.
Example:
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_f]Asia[/name_f], & [name_f]Alice[/name_f] are great b/c each has a different vowel sound although they are all starting with A. You can still have the look of alliteration without the matchy theme.

Personally, I’d avoid anything in between. What I mean is, either they all have A names or they all have different first initials. If two have A names and one is left out, it may be unsettling to one of the children later.

I am not a fan of the names you have listed, besides [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], but, I am picky and have taste that is all over the name map.

[name_m]Harlan[/name_m] is a bit too similar to [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] for me, but if you really love it I wouldn’t say it’s completely unusable. The two names do go pretty nicely together.

I think they’re not the right sibset, but not because of the two A names, but because of the duplicate “arl” syllables.

I think that most people strive for initials all being different or all the same. I think it can work to have two of three with the same initial, but it definitely depends on the sounds of the names.

P.S. I know a couple with big sister [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], and little twins El0die and L1lah. The double E doesn’t bother them, because there are other similarities, like the ‘L’ that ties all three.

After reading the comments, I love [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_f]Azure[/name_f] and [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]. I think these names fo perfect together. I did once hear a girl called [name_f]Athena[/name_f] back in college. So unique.

[name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_f]Azure[/name_f] and [name_f]Athena[/name_f] are amazing together. Since you like unique names those are my suggestions.

I love [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] [name_u]Page[/name_u]… It’s a balance that is bold & unique; it will age really well! I don’t think you need to start from scratch- your list for the girls is a good one!

I somewhat like [name_m]Harlan[/name_m], but the “arl” sound in both their names does stand out to me. Idk if it would to the average non-nameberry. MY biggest turn off is that I think of the [name_m]Harlan[/name_m] County Massacre (or “war”, as they label it)…(but that’s from someone who is married to a historian… If you’re not in the states it’s not a big deal.)

[name_m]Joplin[/name_m] too… There’s [name_f]Janis[/name_f] [name_m]Joplin[/name_m] association I really like, but as I helped with relief work in [name_m]Joplin[/name_m] after the tornado- that’s my strongest connection.

Of the others, I like [name_f]India[/name_f] better than [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], just because it’s more feminine (plus, the avoided repeat of “o” sound).
Or even better than [name_f]India[/name_f], I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] with [name_f]Indie[/name_f].

If it were me, I would go with…
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_f]Indie[/name_f] and [name_u]Scout[/name_u]!

You’ll have to work your middle-name magic and create something as truly awesome as [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] [name_u]Page[/name_u] again!!! I just love that!

Best of luck and a double congrats!

Based on your other threads, I know you may be going for a “blue” theme.

In that case, I like [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_u]Indigo[/name_u], and [name_f]Azure[/name_f].

I like this triad way of looking at it:

[name_u]Arlo[/name_u] and [name_f]Azure[/name_f] - start with A
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u] and [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] - end with O
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] and [name_f]Azure[/name_f] - color names, twins

Everyone has something in common with each other and no one is left out.
