[name]Hi[/name] Berries,
I would appreciate very much if you could offer your insight with how to pair my daughter”s name, [name]Jasper[/name] [name]Eliana[/name], with a sibling. You might remember my recent struggles about whether to transition to her middle name. (update: I think this door has closed on me and instead, I am going to obsess about her sibling name to make sure I get it right).
Now, I know some might suggest that I should go with a unisex name, but I just don”t find most of them ”pretty”. I chose [name]Jasper[/name] because I find it both pretty and spunky on a girl. What options do you think are open to me?
The only name that I feel good about at the moment is [name]Tessa[/name]. I find it is simple, feminine, vintage and hip/trendy too. Make sense? The less feminine nn [name]Tess[/name] might be fitting with [name]Jasper[/name]/[name]Jazz[/name]?
Here is a short sample of my tastes:
[name]Tessa[/name] ” this is a front-runner
[name]Anya[/name] ” since learning it is pronounced ”ON-ya”, I find it sounds a bit put-on
[name]Farah[/name] ” perhaps too soft
[name]Fiona[/name] ” I like the combination of soft and spunky but I”m not sold.
I hope to use a family middle name:
[name]Alma[/name] ” prefer this one if I can make it sound right with a FN
[name]Elizabeth[/name] ” or a variant like [name]Elsa[/name], [name]Elsie[/name] or [name]Elspeth[/name]
[name]Helen[/name] ” prefer a variant as I don”t think her day has come again.
I am really looking forward to hearing your suggestions. I feel like I’m boxed into a corner and I hope you can shed some light. Thank you!!!
I think [name]Tess[/name], just [name]Tess[/name], would be perfect with [name]Jasper[/name] [name]Eliana[/name]. I don’t think [name]Tessa[/name] is quite right, though. I also like [name]Ellis[/name] or [name]Hollis[/name] with [name]Jasper[/name] - do either of those do anything for you?
I like the idea of very feminine boys names to go with [name]Jasper[/name] like [name]Arden[/name], [name]Mercer[/name] and [name]Hollis[/name] (like [name]Lemon[/name] suggested). [name]Alma[/name] and [name]Helena[/name] are great family middle names.
I think a great way to do it would be to go with another gem/jewel name! [name]How[/name] cute, and it would emphasize the fact that jasper is a jewel as well.
Maybe you can name your second daughter…
[name]Opal[/name]
[name]Jade[/name]
[name]Onyx[/name] (would be perfect with a feminine middle name)
[name]Sterling[/name] (would be perfect with a feminine middle name)
[name]Ellis[/name] was my first thought for a sister to a girl [name]Jasper[/name], too… very cute. [name]Hollis[/name] is a great match as well. I’ll also suggest [name]Micah[/name] and [name]Carden[/name].
Oh, and I agree with [name]Lemon[/name] about “just” [name]Tess[/name].
I grew up with a female friend named jasper so to me the name has always seemed feminine. I have never liked it for a boy but I agree that it’s fun and spunky on a little girl.
I love the name [name]Tessa[/name] and I don’t think it’s too girly to be paired with [name]Jasper[/name]. I think using another Unisex name or feminine boys name would actually call more attention to the fact that [name]Jasper[/name] is traditionally a boys name. I think a spunky girl’s name like [name]Tessa[/name] or [name]Tess[/name] or another nature name would work like [name]Sage[/name], [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Willow[/name], or [name]Wren[/name]
Hmmm…I thought this was going to be tricky. Some of the comments had me feeling sad that I am ‘stuck’ using a unisex or boy’s name. Suprisingly enough, I much prefer feminine. I think that’s why I’ve had such a hard time with [name]Jasper[/name]'s name. My tastes have evolved and while I still like spunky, I kinda feel like I missed my opportunity to have a girly name on a daughter.
katielea- such a relief to hear your perspective. I tend to agree with you. I think using a boy’s name or a unisex name could work against the situation - giving more of a masculine image to [name]Jasper[/name].
sweetpea - your idea of using another gemstone is a good one! I had considered it before but seem to have since forgotten. It needs to be a legitimate name though. [name]Opal[/name] is gone to a close friends’ daughter, [name]Jade[/name] would have been great if it wasn’t so cutsie with [name]Jasper[/name], and [name]Ruby[/name] is a bit too blatant in this situation I think. DH suprised me last night with a suggestion of [name]Amber[/name], which style wise I think is perfect. I just wish I liked the name a little bit more, independent of [name]Jasper[/name]. I also question whether [name]Amber[/name] is dated alongside say, [name]Crystal[/name] and [name]Robin[/name]?
katielea- where you close enough to [name]Jasper[/name] that you knew how she felt about her name? Was it special to her or was it a burden? If you know, I’d be interested to hear
I like the suggestion of another nature name. i think that could work well…
[name]Raven[/name] - doubt she would have very dark hair though
[name]Coral[/name] - again, this one sounds dated like [name]Amber[/name]
[name]Wren[/name] - cute but not terribly pretty
[name]Ivy[/name]- I like this but it makes me think of xmas
[name]Willow[/name] - taken already and that’s OK
[name]Sage[/name] - this one has lost it’s fresh appeal to me
I really like [name]Tessa[/name] Almay. kind of a variation of [name]Alma[/name] but it flows nicely with [name]Tessa[/name], which, is a really nice name because it is unique but known.
I think [name]Tessa[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name] sound great together. I like [name]Ruby[/name] with [name]Jasper[/name] too. I didn’t realize [name]Jasper[/name] was a gemstone.
other ideas-
[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Mia[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Tansy[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Calista[/name]
[name]Nina[/name]
[name]Alanna[/name]
[name]Gemma[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]Annika[/name]
[name]Lianna[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Allegra[/name]
[name]Coralie[/name]- or just [name]Coral[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Dixie[/name] is cute, but you’re right, I wouldn’t choose [name]Dixon[/name]. You are getting close though…I love southern belle or country girl names.
I would say that [name]Amber[/name] is a bit dated. [name]Robin[/name] seems really nice and refreshing though. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone named [name]Robin[/name], but I have met more [name]Ambers[/name] than I can count. [name]Robin[/name] sounds really sweet. Quick question, have you ever thought about using a female variant of [name]Jasper[/name] for your current daughter? I’ve been debating doing this myself if I have a daughter. That way her nn can be [name]Jaz[/name] or [name]Jasper[/name], yet people will be able to look at her name and know that she is a girl when they see the feminine ending added to the name. This might be a great way to make you feel better about your name choice.
[name]Hi[/name] Sweetpea…
Not sure how you can feminize [name]Jasper[/name]? [name]Do[/name] you mean by adding an ‘a’ to the end? Never considered that. Not sure it sounds quite right either. My [name]MIL[/name] called her Jasperilla a few times. Ha. I like using her second name wherever possible to specify the gender. I have done some researching into stats here in [name]Canada[/name] and there are more people calling their baby girls [name]Jasper[/name] than I had realized. I like that.
I think the jasper I knew liked her name. It was a very unique name then and she was a very unique girl, and spunky. Back then no one knew it was a boys name. I still think it’s very unisex. In fact, I only like it on a girl.
Hey there again -
I was one who thought that you should stick with [name]Jasper[/name] - you liked it, you named it!
As for a girl sibling, I personally do not think you should go too girly. Since my name is a “place” name, I think of these names as unisex edging to girl names.
Some examples:
[name]Ainsley[/name]
[name]Briony[/name]
[name]Ramsey[/name]
[name]How[/name] about some of my other guilty pleasures - none of which are too girly (I guess I have a theme):
Aven
[name]Paget[/name]
[name]Meredith[/name]
Some times I don’t know how well “girly” ages.
But then again, go through a book and first look at names you LIKE.
Good luck!
I think [name]Lesly[/name] is right about place names. I think a ton word names are unisex leaning toward girlie, with obvious exceptions. I think you could use a place, bird, tree, animal, vegetable, mineral.
