I feel like I’ve been posting an inordinate amount lately, for which I’m sorry, lol, but I’ve just come across the perfect way to use [name]Posy[/name], and it’s gotten me very excited. :slight_smile: I’ve been playing around with dozens of ways to get there, but it’s just hit me now and I can’t believe I didn’t think of it all along.

The name is [name]Josefina[/name]. WDYT? I think it has a bit more spunk than [name]Josephine[/name] (which was my problem with that all along–I think it’s gorgeous, it just doesn’t excite me enough as a FN), but much more usable than [name]Primrose[/name], imo.

Any combo ideas? I have two combos I’ve been tossing around and like quite a bit, but I want to hold off on sharing it because I’m not sure either one of them is the one.

I prefer [name]Josefina[/name] to [name]Josephine[/name]! Would you prn it Ho-seh-fee-nah? Or with the J sound? I think [name]Posy[/name] [name]Belle[/name] would be a cute nn, but I know you’ve already got a [name]Belle[/name] name in your list, or you could do [name]Josefina[/name] [name]Mirabelle[/name] or some other belle name. [name]Posy[/name] [name]Lou[/name] is cute. [name]Josefina[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] or [name]Lucille[/name]? I don’t know, just thinking aloud, so to speak. :wink:

[name]How[/name] are you pronouncing it? Because to me that is a very Spanish name. [name]Jo[/name]-seh-fee-nah or Ho-seh-fee-nah? I feel like it should be pronounced like the later, in which case I’m not a fan unless you have Spanish roots, but that is just my own prejudice of ethnically specific names remaining with people from the cultures they came from. For example, I love the names [name]Saskia[/name] and [name]Dimitri[/name], but would never use them unless I married a Russian man seeing as I am not Russian myself. That being said, I don’t know you, so maybe you are of Spanish descent :slight_smile:

I also may be a little biased because I am in love with the name [name]Josephine[/name] and it hurts my pride a little to see it called unexciting and not spunky, because I think it is both of thse thing, haha. But that is just me :wink:

I love [name]Posey[/name] as a nickname for both [name]Josefina[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name], though. It is so sweet :slight_smile:

I prefer [name]Josephine[/name] personally, but I also tend to steer toward the versions of names that don’t end in a. I also agree with PP - I don’t get at all how you get [name]Posy[/name] out of [name]Josephine[/name]/[name]Josefina[/name]/similar names.

Are you saying it with a “joe” sound because I instinctively prn [name]Josefina[/name] with a “ho” sound so maybe [name]Josephina[/name] would be a good option? [name]Posy[/name] doesn’t make a lot of sense to me as a nn with the [name]Josefina[/name] spelling but I recently met a [name]Josefina[/name] nn [name]Fina[/name] which I think is nice.

I have been saying it like [name]Josephine[/name]-ah. Since I took Spanish for two years in college, I feel a bit of a traitor for saying it that way, but the “H” sound just doesn’t sound right to me. I first came across [name]Josefina[/name] because of the American girl doll, so I’ve always said jo-se-fee-nah, but I don’t want to disrespect the whole Hispanic culture. :confused: I had considered the [name]Josephina[/name] spelling (I had actually preferred it a while ago), but it just didn’t seem right somehow. Part [name]Josefina[/name], part [name]Josephine[/name], but not quite as nice as either of them. Besides, if I said, “This is my daughter [name]Josephina[/name]”, do you think people would instinctively spell it with the “ph” or the “f”? I don’t know, there’s just something streamlined that I prefer about [name]Josefina[/name]. The Spanish aspect was something I worried about, though, since I want a more English pronunciation and I don’t have any Spanish blood in me.

As for [name]Posy[/name], lol, I don’t know where it came from… I’ve just heard that it’s recognized as an old nn for [name]Josephine[/name], so I figured it could work for a [name]Josephine[/name] variant. I’ve heard of Carloses going by [name]Charlie[/name], so I would think a [name]Josefina[/name] could go by [name]Posy[/name].

@ajbear - thanks for your suggestions! I think if I use [name]Josefina[/name], I would use [name]Claire[/name] as the second MN, which honors family. I like the idea of a shorter “O” or “E” name in the middle–I’ve been tossing around [name]Josefina[/name] [name]Olive[/name] [name]Claire[/name] and [name]Josefina[/name] [name]Elena[/name] [name]Claire[/name] (too Spanish?) or [name]Josefina[/name] [name]Elise[/name] [name]Claire[/name]. I’m not really set on anything yet, but I do really love [name]Josefina[/name] [name]Olive[/name] [name]Claire[/name]. If you’re going to spell it [name]Josefina[/name] then you should pronounce it ho-sah-fee-nah, otherwise you’re just mispronouncing the name. It would be like naming your kid [name]Juan[/name] and pronouncing it ju-an. I’m not Hispanic but a good chunk of my husband’s family is and I know they would find it offensive if someone used a Spanish name and wasn’t pronouncing it right (especially if that person wasn’t even of Spanish or Hispanic descent). If you’re pronouncing it joe-sah-fee-nah then go with the [name]Josephina[/name] spelling.

I’m glad you posted this, I’ve been playing around with [name]Jo[/name]- variants for ages to honor a [name]Jozefa[/name], I like [name]Josephine[/name] but DH isnt sold and like you, sometimes it just feels a little less than exciting! Right now I’m loving [name]Josepha[/name] nn [name]Josie[/name], but still on the search.

[name]Josefina[/name] does make me pause for a second and think "Okay, which sound am I using a J- an H- or a Y-…but the cues would be pretty apparent based on last name, what language youre having this conversation in, and where in the world you are. I dont think it would be an issue, especially if youre using adorable nn [name]Posy[/name]!

I took this question to my BFF who’s Mexican and isn’t a name nerd like us for some everyday person perspective: these were her answers not mine.

If she was introduced to a [name]Josefina[/name] “jo” sound she would assume it was the “ph” spelling (ia)
If she saw [name]Josephina[/name]/[name]Josefina[/name] spelled out she would assume the first had a J sound the second one had an H (again ia)
If she met a white girl with the F spelling it would be weird and if they prn it J she wouldnt be offended but she would assume you didn’t know about this name, on the flip side she seems sort of offended or wouldn’t respect Hispanics using the J prn.

I’m not so sure you couldn’t get away with it, Spanish speaking cultures can be very complex, 5 of my Aunts live on the isle de San [name]Andres[/name] or in [name]Panama[/name] and for all I know they might feel completely different. Unfortunately they only speak Spanish and I barely know any so I can’t ask for you :frowning: I would drop the [name]Posy[/name] nn for this spelling if you chose to use it. Maybe you should do a poll?

[name]Josefina[/name] is the traditional Scandinavian spelling, pronounced like [name]Josephina[/name], if that matters. I like [name]Josefina[/name] a lot.

In response to the Spanish comments, I’m Italian and we say the J the same as [name]Joann[/name] or [name]Joe[/name]. If I heard it out loud I would spell it [name]Josephine[/name]/a. I don’t get the [name]Posy[/name] nn but I don’t get [name]Peggy[/name] for [name]Margaret[/name] either, so… I think it works.

[name]Josefina[/name] is definitely Ho-seh-fina. This is the spanish spelling so spanish pronunciation. i live in [name]Cali[/name] its always said this way. I don’t particularly like it. I prefer [name]Josephina[/name] I get wanting just the “f” instead of “ph” but its just a differnt pronunciation altogether

I think that in [name]America[/name], the [name]Josefina[/name] spelling would be seen as automatically Hispanic and people would assume it was pronounced with an H. [name]Josephina[/name] would be a better bet.

On another note, I really like all versions of [name]Josephine[/name] and the nn [name]Posy[/name] is adorable. I sort of see how you get that, but I would put a middle name that starts with P right after it. I like [name]Claire[/name] as a second middle.

Thanks so much for this! I guess to avoid from potentially offending Spanish speakers I could just say, “Oh, we use the Scandinavian/Swedish pronunciation.” I don’t know a ton about anything Swedish, but I was absolutely enamored by it as a little girl, I loved reading those World War II stories where all the little Jewish kids escaped to safety in [name]Sweden[/name]. :slight_smile: I like that tie to the name, and the Swedish culture. Hmm. I have a bit more thinking to do, but this has really changed how I look at the name.

I also looked up [name]Josefina[/name] on forvo–and both in [name]Sweden[/name] and Spain it was said like jo-seh-fee-nah–does anyone have a comment on that? I only took two years of Spanish so I don’t feel like I know a ton about it, but I figured that even with the difference in pronunciation for Spain and Central/South [name]America[/name], [name]Josefina[/name] would still be said like ho-seh-fee-nah in Spain. [name]Josefina[/name] is nice, but I pronounce it the original, Hispanic way, ho-sah-fee-nah, not [name]Jo[/name]-sah-fee-na. And I think most people would as well. To me it is like naming your daughter Siobhan and pronouncing it See-ob-an. Not to be offensive but if I met a little girl named Josefina and the mother told me to pronounce the J as jay instead of ho, I would think that she was less intelligent. Either A) She didn’t do any research on the name, or B) She did, but decided to ignore it. Also I wouldn’t name my daughter a distinctly Hispanic name without being Hispanic…
