I have a challenge for everyone - help with MN/honoring family

So this is a tough one. Everyone is such a naming expert, though, that I hope you ladies can come up with something! We are at a loss, and it’s discouraging. :frowning:

We want to pick a middle name for DS that honors both our fathers. This is especially important to me because mine passed away when I was a teen, and we were really close.

H’s Dad: FN [name]John[/name], MN [name]Lawrence[/name]
My Dad: FN [name]Melvin[/name] (NN [name]Mel[/name]), no MN

We don’t want two middle names, ie: BabyBoy [name]John[/name] [name]Mel[/name] or BabyBoy [name]Mel[/name] [name]John[/name]
Using my maiden name is out - it’s a MOUTHFUL. :expressionless:

[name]How[/name] in the world can I select a name that incorporates these two nicely? Or even semi-nicely? :expressionless:

I thought of looking at the meanings and trying to select a name that incorporates both. [name]John[/name] is Hebrew and means “God is [name]Gracious[/name].” As for [name]Melvin[/name], it really varies depending on the site! I have literally found about five different meanings: counsel protector, chief, friend, etc. I don’t know how I’d realistically find one that has the incorporation of both meanings, though, unless I sifted through names for hours and hours and hours - which, I might likely have to do.

Any help, insight, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Okay I took a kind of weird approach, but tell me what you think!

[name]Jovin[/name] - this is a mixture of [name]John[/name] and [name]Melvin[/name]. It is a real name of Latin origins and is a variant of [name]Jovan[/name]. Its meaning is “father of the sky” which I think is also cool since you are honoring your fathers! I also think it is actually a really great sounding name!

Lavin - I think pn [name]Lay[/name]-vin. This name seems to be very obscure but there are some listings of it on the internet. It is listed as more of a girls name but I think as a middle it is very masculine

Im not sure how you will feel about this but hopefully you like one of them! Good luck!

I might go with initials…choose names you love that start w/J and M in either order. I like [name]Joshua[/name] [name]Michael[/name] or [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Mercer[/name].

What about Jordell? It is an English form of [name]Jordan[/name]. It has the ‘[name]Jo[/name]’ of [name]John[/name] and the ‘el’ of [name]Melvin[/name].

[name]Joel[/name]! Perfect combination of the 2 names, and also a nice, legitimate name.

What first names are you considering? I think that would be helpful. You could pick a first name that honoured one of the grandparents and use the other’s name as a middle name. Since [name]Mel[/name]/[name]Melvin[/name] is more difficult to honour because it doesn’t have any “related” names, you might like a variant of [name]John[/name] for the first name:
[name]Jack[/name]
[name]Jackson[/name]
[name]Ivan[/name]
Séan
[name]Shane[/name]
[name]Zane[/name]
[name]Ian[/name]
[name]Evan[/name]
(unrelated but similar-sounding names)
[name]Jonathan[/name]
[name]Jonas[/name]
[name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Joah[/name]

names similar to [name]Mel[/name]/[name]Melvin[/name]
[name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Armel[/name]
[name]Kelvin[/name]
[name]Kevin[/name]
[name]Vincent[/name]
[name]Melville[/name]
[name]Michael[/name], [name]Michel[/name]
[name]Maxwell[/name]
[name]Marcel[/name]
[name]Samuel[/name]

Something like [name]Jack[/name] [name]Melvin[/name] or [name]Jonathan[/name] [name]Mel[/name] would be great.

Or [name]Joel[/name]… Honestly I think anything we come up with is going to be a huge stretch and not feel like an honor name for [name]John[/name] and [name]Melvin[/name]. Unless you want to make something up like Meljohn or Johnvin, I would just name him [name]John[/name] [name]Melvin[/name] and call him by a nickname…

ETA: Or a variant of [name]John[/name] with [name]Melvin[/name] as a middle name. Actually, [name]Evan[/name] could honor both. It’s a variant of [name]John[/name] and has the van/vin syllable.

My first thought was [name]Vince[/name] - [name]Mel[/name]vin and Lawrence.

There’s also Jomel - I’ve seen this as one of [name]Jamal[/name]'s many spelling variations. It’s got the [name]Jo[/name]- from [name]John[/name] and [name]Mel[/name] from [name]Melvin[/name].

I like the suggestion of [name]Evan[/name], I think it honours both in a way that isn’t too much of a stretch and also doesn’t look made up.

Thank you all so much!!! These are seriously great ideas that I never would have thought of! I truly appreciate it.

We haven’t decided on a first name yet, but we are leaning towards [name]Colin[/name]. It’s kind of a problem, I think, since all of our boy names we like end in “N,” and a lot of the names to choose from also end in “N” or have the “IN” sound.

This is giving me a lot to think about, though, and I am hoping that we can come up with the right one!

[name]Vaughn[/name]
[name]Vince[/name]
[name]Vincent[/name]
[name]Levi[/name]
[name]James[/name]
[name]Levon[/name]
[name]Jem[/name]
[name]Len[/name]

I hope this helped! I know they might be a stretch.
