I have a question about a name

[name_f]Do[/name_f] u consider the name [name_u]Montgomery[/name_u] having french or [name_f]English[/name_f] origin ?

I always thought it was an [name_f]English[/name_f] name

I’d think Scottish first, I think. But then English. I think the surname derives from a [name_u]French[/name_u] place name or something like that, but I’ve only ever met [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers with this as a first name or surname.

It comes from [name_m]Norman[/name_m] [name_u]French[/name_u] which intertwines a lot with old English. I’d actually say it’s an ultimate hybrid of both

[name_u]Montgomery[/name_u] was originally a [name_m]Norman[/name_m] place name, but as a person’s name it is definitely English/British. So I guess it depends on what you define as the name’s “origin”.
