So I have the sweetest great uncle, whose name is [name]Bernie[/name] (full name is [name]Bernard[/name]). I love him to pieces but I haven’t thought of using his name until now. And now that I have thought of it, it has made me realize how cute [name]Bernie[/name] would sound on a little boy! It would certainly stand out but wouldn’t be unfamiliar…
The only trouble is I’m not too fond of [name]Bernard[/name] (it reminds me of the St. [name]Bernard[/name] dog plus I don’t like the hard “nard” sound) and I have a hard time imagining it on a teenager…
So I’m coming to you guys to help me decide on whether I should seriously consider it.
So on that note: what are your thoughts on [name]Bernie[/name]? [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Bernie[/name] could survive on a boy nowadays? Any suggestions for a longer version (besides [name]Bernard[/name])?
[name]Bernie[/name] is ok. There were six [name]Bernie[/name]'s born in [name]England[/name] in 2011.
I can’t honestly think of any names, all the names with ber in them has the t as well, and that would make [name]Bertie[/name] a more obvious nickname. However:
Beren (!!!)
[name]Albert[/name]
[name]Bertram[/name]
[name]Auberon[/name]
[name]Bernardo[/name]/[name]Bernardino[/name]
Bernd
[name]Berne[/name]
[name]Timber[/name]
I had a friend in secondary school called [name]Bernie[/name] - full name [name]Bernice[/name] - so my first association is with a girl. My best friend did have a male budgie called [name]Bernie[/name] so that is my second. I think [name]Bernard[/name] would work better today as it would be percieved and vintage - which is “in” at the moment I think - better than [name]Bernie[/name] anyway.
I like [name]Bernard[/name] with nickname [name]Bernie[/name].
It’s familiar but not weird. Classic.
As for bullying, I work at a middle school where boys are named the gamut from [name]Earl[/name] to [name]Killian[/name] to Nine to [name]Jayden[/name] to [name]Courtney[/name]. I’ve never heard of anyone mocked for their name. They usually focus on more shallow things like appearance and clothes when picking on each other.
