[name]Grant[/name] or [name]Clayton[/name] feel like they would fit in best with someone born in the 80’s. [name]Bo[/name], maybe, too - [name]Leander[/name] doesn’t feel particularly 80’s to me and probably wouldn’t make sense.

Honestly, I was really unsure about [name]Grant[/name] and [name]Clayton[/name] when they were first suggested to me. The more I thought about them, the more they grew on me. I didn’t want to use [name]Grant[/name] because that is my dad’s name, but dad wouldn’t care. He’d want me to use the name if it fit the character. [name]Both[/name] [name]Clayton[/name] and [name]Grant[/name] scream the outdoor type…so does [name]Lee[/name] which was the first name that came to mind. [name]Leander[/name] I tossed in because it sounded different. I know what you mean about it not sounding 80’s. Sometimes people don’t name their children what is popular when they are born. My aunt has 3 daughters, and none of their names are in the top 200 in their birth years. Family names don’t always fit with what’s popular at the time. [name]Bo[/name] [name]Jarvis[/name] was my last choice and is the choice most “out-in-left-field”. I think it has a different feeling then [name]Lee[/name], [name]Grant[/name], and [name]Clayton[/name].

Well yeah, people don’t always use names that are popular for that generation, but I think if your writing a story, I think it would be best to keep with the style of names from that time frame. I like [name]Lee[/name] on it’s own, too and I think it goes well with what your going for.

Here’s a bunch that were used in the 80’s and that seem to fit your specifications:

Thanks for the list. I considered many of the names on the list. I use this site often Popular Baby Names. This site 5,000 Most Common Last Names in the U.S. | Name Census is good for surnames, but often I pick surnames from the phonebook.

To me, you described a [name]Bo[/name] [name]Jarvis[/name]!

Wow, I can’t believe my totally out-in-left-field name is getting so many votes.

I am going to eliminate [name]Clayton[/name] [name]Sheridan[/name].

Oh boy, this is going to be a hard one. It’s down to 3 and the poll is so close. I’m going to work on my character sheet on my down time tonight at work and it might make the decision easier. I’ll probably end up posting another poll. Thanks for all the input.

I agree with flick! this description is very much like my guy, actually, and i could imagine him as a [name]Lee[/name]; I think you should just stick with [name]Lee[/name].

I have a cousin [name]Lee[/name]… it is a solid name and your description reminds me of him… love [name]Lee[/name]!

[name]Grant[/name] seems too rough and [name]Bo[/name] trying too hard and a little strange on a 30 - year old. I would’ve loved [name]Lee[/name] [name]Corliss[/name], simple and kind sounding, but [name]Leander[/name] seems too nerdy for the character. I chose [name]Clayton[/name], but I’m regretting it, I really only chose it for [name]Clay[/name], which is nice for the relaxed, nature guy, but again, I don’t like [name]Clayton[/name] with it. I with you’d use just [name]Lee[/name] or just [name]Clay[/name]

My original thought was just [name]Lee[/name]…I thought [name]Leander[/name] might add a little different sound. I have no problem with just [name]Lee[/name].

@isabel_r: I thought about what you said about “[name]Bo[/name] trying to hard”, I think you’re right. It was a name I tossed from left field so to speak.
