Hello! Due in [name]June[/name] with a baby girl and going crazy over names. I’d love thoughts on my current list, in an attempt to narrow it. I’d also love new suggestions! Names are in order of my current preference. As you can tell, I don’t love frilly or precious names like [name]Beatrice[/name] or [name]Emmeline[/name]. I lean toward spunky or boyish monikers. Last name is Hispanic, two syllables, and begins with L.
Thanks in advance! (This list is in order of my current preferences)
[name]Sawyer[/name] – Sassy and boyish (which I love), but worried it might be too trendy (a la [name]Madison[/name], [name]Harper[/name], etc.). [name]Ruby[/name] – Spunky and sweet, but worried it might be too popular, or its ship may have sailed. It’s #75 in [name]CA[/name], where I live. [name]Juniper[/name] – [name]Unique[/name] but maybe reminiscent of dated [name]Jennifer[/name]? [name]Miller[/name] – family name and love the surname for girls thing. Too blah? [name]Don[/name]'t love [name]Millie[/name]. [name]Ezra[/name] – love this family name. Too masculine for a girl? The soft -a ending makes it sound feminine to me. [name]Arwen[/name] – Pretty and unique, but too [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings/[name]Ren[/name]. faire? Madchen – [name]Love[/name] this [name]German[/name] name, but friends and family think it’s crazy – if they even think it’s a name! I actually knew a girl with this name. [name]Indigo[/name] – Cool, but too out-there? [name]Noah[/name] – similar to [name]Ezra[/name]. Is it too popular (for boys, but still)?
I like [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Arwen[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name]. If you cut the -h in [name]Noah[/name] you get [name]Noa[/name] (the Hebrew girl version). [name]Ezra[/name] is boy to me. [name]Miller[/name] and [name]Sawyer[/name] too, but it’s more okay as they are surnames. Madchen is a big no. [name]Ruby[/name] is ok.
[name]Ezra[/name] is a boys name.
If I saw [name]Ezra[/name] on my class roster, I’d assume it was a boy. That will cause issues on paper in her life for sure. Same with [name]Noah[/name], and [name]Miller[/name]. [name]Noa[/name] is a female name.
I like [name]Ruby[/name] or [name]Arwen[/name] from your list.
My first thought on [name]Sawyer[/name], other than it being much too masculine, was that you might like [name]Sutton[/name]. I also agree with the others about the boys names you’ve listed. [name]Ezri[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Indigo[/name] and [name]Arwen[/name] are all fine names, though.
I would keep only [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Arwen[/name], otherwise, I’m not a fan or they are definitely boys names to me. If you want a Unisex name, there are much better options out there. Here are some of Nameberrys top 25 of 2011 for a bit of inspiration–
Thanks, all! [name]Sawyer[/name] is pretty unisex, I think. I only know of baby girls named [name]Sawyer[/name] at this point. For instance, why would [name]Parker[/name] be considered unisex, but not [name]Sawyer[/name]? [name]Both[/name] are surnames, and [name]Parker[/name] sounds much more like a boy’s name to me. I guess it’s regional/personal taste. [name]Noah[/name], [name]Miller[/name], and [name]Ezra[/name], I agree are pretty much only used for boys. Not that I necessarily care which gender they “belong” to, but I know that’s opening a can of worms
I like many of people’s suggestions! Esp. [name]Rowan[/name]. Thanks for the help, I’m sure I’ll be back!
[name]Ruby[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], and [name]Indigo[/name] seem the most wearable to me. And as others have said, [name]Noa[/name] without the H. I agree with you that [name]Ruby[/name]'s ship may have sailed, but if you love it use it and your daughter will make it her own. I rather like [name]Garnet[/name], [name]Opal[/name], or even… [name]Emerald[/name]!
[name]Arwen[/name] is too LOTR for me… any interest in [name]Anwen[/name]?
I love [name]Sawyer[/name] on a girl (and a boy). It reminds me of the 1930’s from Mr. [name]Smith[/name] Goes to [name]Washington[/name] and Cats [name]Don[/name]‘t Dance (though [name]Sawyer[/name] was the female characters’ last name, it what everyone called them). It has spunk. I like [name]Ruby[/name] for the same reasons (minus the movie reference). [name]Miller[/name] is nice and I agree with the suggestions for [name]Noa[/name] over [name]Noah[/name].
I don’t really like the others as much.
[name]Sawyer[/name] was actually one of the ones I omitted from that top 25 list, purely because it was already on your list. I am not sure how [name]Parker[/name] is a unisex name, (I see it as a boys name) but I do know both [name]Male[/name] and female Parkers. I only know boy Sawyers, but it’s not a common name where I am at, like you said, it’s a regional thing! I think if you want a Unisex first name, especially one that is more common for boys, you should make sure to choose a gender specific middle name, that generally helps to avoid confusion, something like [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Jane[/name], [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]Eloise[/name], etc etc, I am sure you get the idea.
Well I think we have similar styles, so I will give my opinion.
[name]Sawyer[/name] - on my list, I’ve always loved this name for a girl. The first time I heard it, it was on a female character so I will forever see it as a girls name.
[name]Ruby[/name] - This used to be on my list but I nixed it due to popularity and my husband’s general dislike for it. I have met 3 [name]Ruby[/name]'s in the past couple days in my town… a 4 month old, a 3 year old, and a 6 year old.
[name]Juniper[/name] - I like this name, I love the nickname [name]June[/name] more than the actual name though. I’m from the south, and it is kind of a “joke” name here… kind of like [name]Cletus[/name]?
[name]Miller[/name] – [name]LOVE[/name] on a girl! It just sounds dignified and serious, while also being spunky.
[name]Ezra[/name] - I’m not too fond of this name, on either gender. It just gives me a weird vibe.
[name]Arwen[/name] – [name]Love[/name] [name]Arwen[/name]. I don’t think the general public will get the LOTR connection. Have you considered [name]Elowen[/name]?
Madchen - I’ve never heard or seen this name so I’m not exactly sure how to pronounce it. Definitely unique.
[name]Indigo[/name] - On my list, love this name. I have a thread asking if it is too hippie too… I guess I just don’t want it to scream “Granola Hipster!” if you know what I mean.
[name]Noah[/name] - I actually love [name]Noa/name on a girl, but it’s just waaaay too popular for me to use. [name]Lovely[/name] sound though. I like the [name]Noa[/name] version more because it looks more exotic and it’s not quite so Bible-y.
I think I’m replying to rowangreeneyes but I’m new to this… thanks for the input, we definitely have similar name taste! [name]Lola[/name] would be on my list, too (it’s my grandmother’s name) but doesn’t work with the last name. Interesting to know about [name]Juniper[/name] – I’m in L.A. so I haven’t heard that, but my dog’s name is [name]Amos[/name] so maybe I just love ridiculous-sounding southern names, ha. I think you’ve convinced me that [name]Ruby[/name] is too popular. Maybe for a middle name, though. I replied to your [name]Indigo[/name] thread! I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to go through with it (Also my husband doesn’t love it), but it’s really cool. [name]Indie[/name] is a cute nickname but that might actually make it more hipster I’m going to have to think on this!
[name]Sawyer[/name] – I don’t care for it at all. And I do agree that it has the potential to be super-trendy.
[name]Ruby[/name] – It’s cute, but I know like two people who have kids named [name]Ruby[/name]. Definitely rising in popularity.
[name]Juniper[/name] – [name]LOVE[/name]. And no, it’s a world away from [name]Jennifer[/name].
[name]Miller[/name] --NMS
[name]Ezra[/name] --[name]Way[/name] too masculine.
[name]Arwen[/name] – [name]LOVE[/name]. I know an adult [name]Arwen[/name] who wears her name well.
Madchen – NMS
[name]Indigo[/name] – It’s okay.
[name]Noah[/name] – I would take off the A and use [name]Noa[/name], which is a legitimate female name. If you do that, I think it has potential.
Ohhhhh yes they will. The films took care of that. I know a toddler named [name]Arwen[/name] and the mother gets asked multiple times daily whether she’s named after LOTR – she complains about it almost every time I see her and says she wishes shed chosen a different name because of it. That is the only mom I’ve ever heard that from.
[name]Shame[/name], because it’s so pretty - and I’d imagine that if you’re a person who doesn’t mind people drawing the connection it would be okay. [name]Just[/name] don’t go into it thinking you’ve picked an under-the-radar literary name.
[name]Sawyer[/name] – Yep too trendy. And too boyish for my taste.
[name]Ruby[/name] – Gorgeous but super popular which takes the shine off a little for me. [name]Rosie[/name]? [name]Sadie[/name]?
[name]Juniper[/name] – A bold choice, has an upper class ring to me, I like the nickname [name]Juni[/name]…[name]Juno[/name]…
[name]Miller[/name] – She will be called [name]Millie[/name], can’t be avoided I’m afraid. Also it’s quite popular I think with the spelling [name]Milla[/name]? [name]How[/name] about [name]Miller[/name] as a middle name, eg [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Miller[/name]?
[name]Ezra[/name] – Too masculine sorry. [name]Edie[/name]? [name]Eulalie[/name]? [name]Eva[/name]?
[name]Arwen[/name] – I like [name]Arwen[/name] but I prefer [name]Anwen[/name], nickname [name]Annie[/name]. Or what about [name]Wynne[/name] or [name]Quinn[/name]? [name]Anwen[/name] has lovely Welsh heritage as opposed to being made up. [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Indigo[/name]? [name]Anwen[/name] [name]Indigo[/name]?
Madchen – She might not be too happy with this one, very harsh sounding to my British ears
[name]Indigo[/name] – Yes cool, getting popular & trendy here in Australia, nickname [name]Indie[/name] is fun…
[name]Noah[/name] – what about [name]Noam[/name]? I know a beautiful 3 year old girl with this name. Or [name]Noa[/name] without the H, still may be mistaken for a boy’s name when spoken though.
[name]Arwen[/name]: VERY BEAUTIFUL!!!
[name]Ruby[/name]: PRETTY! Reminds me of [name]Lucy[/name].
[name]Indigo[/name]: Seems very male, but it’s so out there, who can tell?
[name]Juniper[/name]: I prefer [name]Junia[/name], but it’s nice enough.
Madchen: this name is misspelled. Madchen is meant to be Mädchen and means girl in [name]German[/name].
[name]Ezra[/name] / [name]Miller[/name] / [name]Noah[/name] / [name]Sawyer[/name]: male names and will cause confusion and perhaps embarrassment for the rest of her life. [name]Sawyer[/name] is a male name and no number of girls with that name will change that.
