I’ve been a lurker here for a while now. I’m due in Sept and SO and I can not find a boy name we can agree on. (I’m starting to consider finding out the sex now so if it’s a girl we don’t have to waste time and energy debating this haha)
Seriously though we are soooooooooooo far apart I don’t think we will ever agree on something. Our styles are close to the same but we still can’t find common ground. For the most part we like old names that are unused but are still actual names. When I say old I mean really old, like Norse old or very old European or Scandanavian.
As an idea here’s what’s been tossed around and veto’d by one or the other.
Still on the table:
[name]Aric[/name] - I like this but am unsure, it sounds kind of plain to me
[name]Rafe[/name] - SO’s first choice and favorite, I like it in therory but can not picture calling a child this
[name]Axel[/name]/[name]Aksel[/name] - SO is a metal head so the connection to GNR worries me even though that’s not why we’d pick it, also I think it sounds a bit harsh with middle name.
Veto’d
[name]Thor[/name] - SO is still pouting that I veto’d this
Daxten - I liked it wasn’t in love with it though SO hates it
[name]Dominick[/name] - I think is horrible NMS at all
[name]Thorin[/name] - I think sounds like thorn (like on a rose bush)
[name]Torin[/name] - I liked but SO thinks it’s a girls name even though it’s not
Xaid/Xade - Was my favorite, SO hates it (doesn’t meet above criteria)
Some that I’ve recently considered but have not discussed yet
[name]Bram[/name] - I think it needs more though and I don’t like [name]Abraham[/name]
[name]Abraxas[/name] - like but not sure it’s usable
[name]Saxon[/name]
[name]Aric[/name]- Interesting spelling, I can see why it would be plainer to you. Have you considered names like [name]Alaric[/name], or other names ending in ic?
[name]Rafe[/name]- I think this is cute, but some people may mispronounce it. I think it is a nice name for a young boy and older man.
[name]Axel[/name]/[name]Aksel[/name]- I actually recently made a thread talking about this name because this is a family name on my husbands side. Some people mentioned GNR and I hate that association, especially since that is not even his real name. Anyway it is a nice name though.
[name]Bram[/name]- I think it is cute. [name]Do[/name] you like [name]Abram[/name]? It isn’t [name]Abraham[/name], but still really close to [name]Bram[/name].
[name]Abraxas[/name]- This is cool and unique. He will be the only child with this name, which is not always bad.
[name]Saxon[/name]- NMS, but I can see the appeal.
I would recommend not going with [name]Axel[/name] [name]Gunnar[/name], because people may think you guys are really into weapons and what not. [name]Abram[/name] [name]Gunnar[/name] sounds nice to me.
Let me think of some others. I can post back if I get some ideas.
From your first list, my favorite is [name]Axel[/name] (this spelling). I also really like [name]Bram[/name], and I think it could stand alone. And [name]Saxon[/name] is a guilty pleasure of mine. I just think the first syllable could draw teasing on the playground.
[name]Love[/name] [name]Bram[/name]! I like it as a full name or as a nickname. If there isn’t a longer name that you like then I don’t think that it “needs” more. I like [name]Saxon[/name] a lot as well. It makes me think of [name]Saxon[/name] [name]Sydney[/name]-[name]Turner[/name] of the Bloomsbury Group.
I go back and forth between liking [name]Rafe[/name] and being bothered by it’s similarity to the word “rape.” I think that [name]Axel[/name] is nice, but not a favorite of mine. I don’t really care for [name]Aric[/name] (It will constantly be misheard and spelled as [name]Eric[/name]).
What about [name]Theron[/name] rather than [name]Thorin[/name]? I’ve also seen Thairin around, which I think has a nice look, but I’m not sure of its legitimacy.
I really like [name]Rafe[/name]. I knew a [name]Rafe[/name] growing up and it really worked well. I think it was his nickname, but it’s what everyone called him and I’m actually not sure what it was short for.
hollylane - I love [name]Soren[/name]! I also like all of the [name]Finn[/name] names but SO does not.
mara-lyn86 - [name]Abram[/name] doesn’t work for me either but thank you. [name]Axel[/name] yes you totally understand, I also don’t think it works with [name]Gunnar[/name]. [name]Aric[/name] is the Norse spelling of [name]Eric[/name].
Emag08 and nono - You’ve got me thinking maybe [name]Bram[/name] can stand alone. I’ll think on it some more.
nono - you totaly understand how I feel about [name]Rafe[/name]. It’s cute and good for an old man but sometimes I just can’t get behind it. [name]Axton[/name] is a great name but my friend’s little guy is named that and same for [name]Theron[/name].
Thanks so far everyone, keep the suggestions coming please.
[name]Ander[/name]

Torleik ([name]Thor[/name]'s contender)
[name]Vali[/name]
[name]Atlas[/name]
[name]Galen[/name]

[name]Kain[/name]
[name]Leon[/name]
[name]Orion[/name]
[name]Sol[/name]
[name]Theron[/name]
[name]Timon[/name]
Triton
[name]Xanthos[/name]
[name]Zeus[/name] - I met a guy named [name]Zeus[/name] actually!
[name]Caden[/name]
[name]Cael[/name] or [name]Kael[/name] or [name]Kale[/name]/[name]Cale[/name]
[name]Finn[/name]
[name]Lachlann[/name] or [name]Lochlann[/name]
[name]Keelan[/name]
I like the other berry’s suggestion of [name]Atlas[/name] [name]Gunnar[/name]. Also- if you both like [name]Gunnar[/name], I like the idea of just using that for the first name since you both like it.
[name]One[/name] word of caution on the name [name]Axel[/name]- I was a preschool teacher and had a student named this. When I saw his name on the roster, I thought it was cool, a good name, etc. Then the kid starts and I realize that, like 50% of his classmates, young [name]Axel[/name] cannot yet dependably say the “x” sound and it comes out like “s”. Which means that when he- and many of his classmates- pronounced his name, it sounded like a cussword, and that led to more than a few awkward situations when people overheard my students calling out to each other at recess. Granted, that won’t be a problem forever, because eventually they will get older and pronounce things more easily- but it’s something I’d keep in mind. [name]Just[/name] my $.02
This made me giggle! haha but is valuable advice thank you !!! I still think [name]Axel[/name] [name]Gunnar[/name] is a bit too harsh though, and I agree [name]Gunnar[/name] is a fine FN but just geographicly I don’t think it would work as it would be shortened to “[name]Gun[/name]” and it’s a little too “Duck Dynasty” where we live for a child called [name]Gun[/name]. haha
vivtaliesin - [name]Thaddeus[/name] is a huge guilty pleasure name for me!!!
