Ian?

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] is probably my favourite boys’ name of all time!
Usually when I have friends or family with a name it puts me off using it but I think [name_m]Ian[/name_m] might be the only name I love enough to make this not matter.
All this is hypothetical at the moment anyway but:
What do you think of [name_m]Ian[/name_m]? I don’t really hear people talking about it on here.
What do you think of the [name_m]Iain[/name_m] spelling?
What would you name siblings for [name_m]Ian[/name_m]?
If I was to use it as a middle name which first names could I put with it?
Thanks!

I had a friend when I was little named [name_m]Ian[/name_m], but I’ve never met anyone else with that name. I like it pretty well, though it does ring a tad dated. Here are some pairs:

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Marcus[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Jacklyn[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] is awesome! A friend of mine named her baby [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and he’s really made me fall in love with the name! I don’t like the [name_m]Iain[/name_m] spelling, only [name_m]Ian[/name_m].

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f]

Thanks!
I like [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] together. [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is also nice.
What do you think about using [name_m]Ian[/name_m] as a middle name? What first names would you pair with it?

I love [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and much prefer this spelling to [name_m]Iain[/name_m].

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Charles[/name_m]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Daniel[/name_m]

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_f]Rachel[/name_f]

[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]

[name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]

[name_f]My[/name_f] boyfriend is named [name_m]Iain[/name_m] and while that spelling poses no problems in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f], in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u] it is almost entirely unheard of. When he spells it for someone here their reply is often that they’ve never seen it spelled that way before, and there is definite hesitation from strangers about how to pronounce it (the same as without the second i, FYI). So when considering which spelling to use, it will make life more convenient to go with the one that’s more common in your area.

Despite that, I find it a very handsome name (and thought that before I met my boyfriend, so it’s not just a personal bias!). It’s masculine, familiar but not super common, and it wears well on young and old.

What do you think of [name_m]Ian[/name_m]?
I really like [name_m]Ian[/name_m]. It has a pleasant sound to it, but it’s just so short, so I prefer to see it as a possible nickname to [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], or [name_m]Lucian[/name_m].
What do you think of the [name_m]Iain[/name_m] spelling?
I don’t like it. I know it’s a legitimate spelling, but the extra ‘i’ just isn’t needed to me.
What would you name siblings for [name_m]Ian[/name_m]?
[name_u]Seth[/name_u] is the first boy name that comes to mind. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] for a girl.
If I was to use it as a middle name which first names could I put with it?
A strong and handsome classic like [name_u]Michael[/name_u] or [name_u]James[/name_u].

@gemnav - I live in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] and I don’t actually think there is a more popular spelling between [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_m]Iain[/name_m]. I pretty much think whichever spelling I went with it would get spelled the other way quite a lot - my name is [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] and it gets spelled [name_f]Rachael[/name_f] all the time so it’s kind of the same situation. I think I do like [name_m]Ian[/name_m] a bit better and it does definitely seem to be the more internationally accepted spelling which is probably a good thing!

There was an [name_m]Ian[/name_m] I went to school with who was the biggest bonehead. [name_m]Even[/name_m] after knowing him, I still love the name. I only like the [name_m]Ian[/name_m] spelling.

[name_m]Ian[/name_m]'s siblings I would name [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_m]Palmer[/name_m], [name_m]Dominic[/name_m], [name_m]Zander[/name_m], [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], or [name_u]Blake[/name_u]

[name_m]Ian[/name_m] as a middle name:

[name_m]Marshall[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Roderick[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]
