Idris

I’d like to know more about the name [name_m]Idris[/name_m]. Is it primarily Welsh or primarily Arabic? Anyone know an [name_m]Idris[/name_m] (save for superb actor [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_f]Elba[/name_f])? Impressions?

I know this is a place in the book (and now movie) series Mortal Instruments. I don’t know anything else about it.

That’s good to know. Thanks Mamabear

Is it EE-Driss? If so I really like the name!

[name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_f]Elba[/name_f] is Welsh, and his full name is actually Idrissa. I like it a lot. I like that has some feminine sounds to it, and that it is still being used for boys. The only other person I can think of with this name is the character of [name_m]Idris[/name_m] in [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who. She was the Tardis.

I love it! [name_m]Idris[/name_m] is on both my boy and girl list. I’ve never known anyone with this name

It is also the given name of a very well-known author, [name_m]Idris[/name_m] Shah, who wrote dozens of books on spirituality, Sufism, folk wisdom, magic – a very interesting man with an interesting background: Idries Shah - Wikipedia

I’ve only heard [name_m]Idris[/name_m] on [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_f]Elba[/name_f] and [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who. Behind the Name says it’s a masculine Welsh name meaning “ardent lord,” comprised of the elements udd meaning “lord, prince” and ris meaning “ardent, enthusiastic, impulsive.” So it’s certainly a masculine name.
