If I keep working with these names, how could I pair them and make the best out of them?

I’m going to calm down and discuss the names I’ve listed with my husband (and no one else!). He says he’ll like anything and everyhting, but I should count on him to steer me away from a possible naming disaster.

[name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] is the name I feel most strongly about for our son. Perhaps it is too quirky, as someone wisely mentioned before but the association with [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] Yellow [name_m]Robe[/name_m] makes it lovely and important in my eyes. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband’s birth name also begins with Ch, so I like that connection without making him a junior.

For a girl, I’m still kind of torn between [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-something or no [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. Would [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], “just” [name_f]Mary[/name_f], “just” [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], [name_f]Corine[/name_f] or [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] make good names for [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u]'s sister?

I love [name_f]Mary[/name_f] on its own, but I also think [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] would make good choices for you.

If you decided on [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] I think nn [name_f]Marcy[/name_f] would be quite adorable! [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] and [name_f]Marcy[/name_f] seem cute! Not sure if their quite matching though!

Mary [name_f]Corine[/name_f] is my favorite pairing with [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u]; [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] and [name_f]Corine[/name_f] balance each other out
without one being less than another!

Issues you might run into is having [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] swallow up a more common [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]! I feel that can be change with the nickname you ultimately decide on! I know if I was a twin named [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] I would hate if my sister got a “normal name” other way around for a sister with a plain name and having a brother with a cool one!

Nicknames for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] combo could be:

Missy, [name_f]Marla[/name_f], [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] - [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginny[/name_f], Mav, Marnia - [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]

Feel [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Corine[/name_f] can stand with [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u], and not very round of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] but can see it up there with [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u]

I understand what you mean .I guess I didn’t see [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] as such a rare name but it might be a little out of balance with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] combination. I’ll try to find other options for our girl.

Thank you all!

I thought it may help to mention that I know a young Chauncey at the school I work at. I’ve never gotten the impression that the name was too quirky or difficult for staff and students alike. It may not be mainstream, but it’s a very charming and functional name as far as I can tell. Be encouraged to use it.

As for the names on your girls list, I think they are all great choices. I disagree with the perspective that Chauncey might outshine the name of his sister. All of your girls names are unexpected, including Mary and Cecilia who rank the highest in the chart by a fair margin. Larissa is the only name that doesn’t seem quite as suitable paired with a brother named Chauncey because of its usage pattern. It’s the only name that wasn’t being used regularly at the turn of the twentieth century. As a result, it feels more modern in style. However, I would still use Larissa if it’s your preferred name.

Some suggestions for narrowing down your girls options: Write each pair down and see if there are any sets you’re feeling more than others. Try out each name for a day and see if one seems to fit more than the others. Pretend you had to eliminate a name, and observe your internal reactions. Which one would you most regret not using? All the best with your decision.

  • Chauncey and [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] make a lovely sibset

  • I think my favorite, though, is [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] and [name_f]Virginia[/name_f].

  • I am not a fan of the double barreled / hyphened first name (e.g. [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_u]Louise[/name_u], [name_u]Jean[/name_u]-[name_m]Paul[/name_m], etc). To me, they sound like nun names. Or antiquated, relegated to women in their 60s.

Thank you! :green_heart: :sunflower: This is very helpful and I’m glad to hear about someone named [name_u]Chauncey[/name_u] going to school and things being normal for him.

I’m definitely going to keep [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Corine[/name_f] and [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] on the girl list. Perhaps I will drop [name_f]Mary[/name_f] entirely.

I appreciate your comments, thank you from the bottom of my heart to one and all. [name_m]Long[/name_m] or short, your messages have been helpful!
