If You Had to Name Two Kids After Countries, Which Would You Pick?

If you had to name two kids - one boy and one girl - after a country each, what would their names be?

Rules:

  1. It has to actually be the name of a country. Not like “Francesca is named after France”.
  2. It’s ok to only use the name people actually call the country. You dont have to include all of the “Kingdom of” or “Democratic Republic of”.
  3. Contested territories and countries trying to gain independence are allowed. Please don’t start talking politics in the comments.

I’m curious to hear your answers and any reasoning for your choices!

[name_f]My[/name_f] choices

Tuvalu for the girl and [name_f]Belize[/name_f] for the boy. I’m going off of sound alone.

Well, I love the name [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] so that wins for girls! But for something less expected I think I’d go with [name_f]Andorra[/name_f] “Andie”, [name_f]Dominica[/name_f], or Syria, all based on sound.

And for a boy I’d go with [name_m]Jordan[/name_m]. [name_m]Or[/name_m] for something less expected, maybe Taiwan “Tai”.

I’ve just deleted my first reply that said I’d choose [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] as my fem ‘country’ name :woman_facepalming:t2:

[name_f]Fem[/name_f]: [name_f]Andorra[/name_f], purely based on sound
Masc: Finland, ditto it works sound-wise as I like [name_m]Finn[/name_m] and [name_m]Leland[/name_m] so much!

I’m boring and they’re two of the more “accepted” country names!

[name_m]Cyprus[/name_m] for a boy (nn Cy) (or possibly [name_m]Leone[/name_m] from [name_f]Sierra[/name_f] [name_m]Leone[/name_m] !!)

Somalia for a girl (or [name_f]Eritrea[/name_f], which I also think sounds quite pretty!!)

These are based on sound alone

For a boy, I’d go with [name_m]Peru[/name_m]. I’ve always liked the nickname [name_m]Perry[/name_m] for a boy, which I’ve grown more and more strongly towards. I also like Ru, and even [name_m]Peru[/name_m] on its own is fine; it’s only 4 letters anyway. Machu Picchu is beautiful as well. Runner-up is (El) [name_m]Salvador[/name_m], I have a paternal uncle named [name_m]Salvador[/name_m] nn [name_m]Sal[/name_m]. Though [name_m]Val[/name_m] and [name_f]Dory[/name_f] are fun nicknames as well. I like [name_m]Salvador[/name_m] in a sense that it’s not pushy with its meaning but has a lot of goodness. And [name_f]El[/name_f] [name_m]Salvador[/name_m] is an underrated country, with the turquoise-browed motmot being so pretty!

For a girl, I’d pick [name_f]Argentina[/name_f]. I’ve always felt like it could be usable with the -tina ending, I’ve heard a lot of nice things about the people there, and as a name, it could even make more unique nicknames like [name_m]Ari[/name_m] or [name_f]Gen[/name_f]. Maybe even [name_f]Angie[/name_f] for a stretch. Runner-up is Estonia, the Esti/Essi nicknames are there and I actually prefer it to [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]. And another (somewhat) family reference, I have a paternal great-grandmother named Estolia, so it’s only 1 letter off!

Though if it works with the rules, I would change the girl’s name to lucia after st. lucia.

I love [name_m]Paris[/name_m] for a boy but I feel like it would just be associated with [name_m]Paris[/name_m] [name_m]Hilton[/name_m] now!

I quite like [name_f]Italy[/name_f] for a girl and Finland for a boy
