Type 1 story here. [name]Love[/name] the categories!
I am [name]Jessica[/name]. My parents, friends, everyone called me [name]Jessica[/name] growing up, except sometimes my family would call me [name]Jessi[/name] in “pet name” kind of places - like just at home really. In high school, I decided [name]Jess[/name] suited me better, and I just started introducing myself that way. It stuck pretty quickly. I still feel it suits me better so that is good! I put [name]Jessica[/name] on my resume, on my wedding invitations, and I sign formal e-mails as [name]Jessica[/name] but informal ones (including at work, just short quick ones with familiar coworkers) with [name]Jess[/name]. My outgoing e-mail is from [name]Jessica[/name]. etc. I am rarely called [name]Jessica[/name] except by people who really don’t know me at all, or by some people who know me in more formal contexts (i.e. less familiar co-workers) who I suspect don’t like nicknames. : D.
I have fond feelings for the name [name]Jessica[/name] - a Biblically based name created by [name]Shakespeare[/name], how awesome is that? - and love my mother’s reason for picking it - but also don’t feel like the very popular vibe of the name fits me. But spunky, strong, short [name]Jess[/name] does. Despite the mismatch - I am SO grateful to have the longer fuller name for formal settings. I like having the choice - keep in mind I could choose to put [name]Jess[/name] on those things if I wanted, there’s nothing stopping me : D. Whereas if I was just [name]Jess[/name] (or, shudder, [name]Jessi[/name]) it would be awkward to write [name]Jessica[/name].
This is rambling : D - summary - I am an example of someone taking ownership of their name/nickname situation as an adolescent, for what it’s worth.
My sons name is [name]Noah[/name] chosen because it is nicknameless. We call him [name]Noah[/name] Balboa or LBC ([name]Little[/name] Butt Cheeks) but no nicknames other people would call him and I like it that way. I prefer the full names for most boys names
My other child on the other hand has a ton of nicknames
Her name is [name]Elissa[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] but she never goes by [name]Elissa[/name]
[name]Eliana[/name] (Its her hebrew name) Type 3 :Definitely not obvious
[name]Ella[/name]([name]Ella[/name] [name]Bea[/name] )[name]Ella[/name] is a type 2 nn becaus [name]Ellie[/name] is more obvious than [name]Ella[/name] but [name]Ive[/name] heard [name]Elissa[/name]'s and [name]Eliana[/name]'s use [name]Ella[/name] or [name]Ellie[/name].
[name]Ellie[/name] some aquaintances and family members who can’t seem to remember its [name]Ella[/name]-kinda bugs me but I stopped caring. [name]Ellie[/name] has grown on me
I was [name]Sophie[/name] on the school register, [name]Sophie[/name] on my work name tag, always introduce myself as [name]Sophie[/name] - but a lot of the time I’m called [name]Soph[/name]. Mates, work colleagues (even my boss called me [name]Soph[/name] once), I’ve had [name]Soph[/name] off a couple of my lecturers too. My family always use my full name, but even people who I’ve just met seem to drop it to [name]Soph[/name] pretty quickly. I don’t really care, I’ve gone through school answering to the wrong name (usually I’d be called by one of my sisters’ names but I’ve also had [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Zoe[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name] off teachers accidentally before). I’ve never told anyone to call me [name]Soph[/name] though, it’s always people deciding to call me it, but I get it more than I get [name]Sophie[/name] outside of my family.
I’m [name]Rachel[/name], so no nickname for me. My husband is [name]Robert[/name] called [name]Bob[/name] ([name]Bobby[/name] growing up) so very obvious nickname. My daughter is [name]Anneliese[/name] [name]Gillian[/name]. While she “officially” goes by [name]Anneliese[/name], she is called [name]Liese[/name] or Liesey by a lot of people. I call her [name]Gillian[/name], [name]Gill[/name], or [name]Gilly[/name] most of the time, and we both like to call her [name]Piper[/name] which is one of those long-story nicknames.
My brother [name]James[/name] is [name]Jimmy[/name] to everyone. My sister [name]Katrina[/name] is called [name]Kat[/name] or [name]Kitty[/name].
Some of my favorite “different” nickname stories are:
When my aunt was born her parents had been arguing of her name for a long time. [name]One[/name] wanted [name]Sheridan[/name] [name]Tracy[/name], which was a family name, and the other wanted [name]Melinda[/name] called [name]Mindy[/name]. So they compromised and her name is [name]Sheridan[/name] [name]Tracy[/name] but she is called [name]Mindy[/name].
[name]One[/name] of my friend’s sons was named after is two grandfathers [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Edward[/name], but the call him [name]Jed[/name]. (Get it? J. [name]Edward[/name].)
A friend growing up was a third, and his parents call him Tres (spanish for 3) instead of the more usual [name]Trey[/name].
I’m [name]Bethan[/name], but I don’t mind my friends and family calling me [name]Beth[/name] whilst in conversation. But I like to be introduced as [name]Bethan[/name]. My dad always jokes around and calls me [name]Betty[/name], but I hate it so that’s why my dad finds it hilarious to joke around calling me it. My sister [name]Rebeca[/name], always goes by Beca, and my brother [name]Mathew[/name] is called [name]Matt[/name] by his friends and I call him [name]Math[/name]. And then we have my mother [name]Gillian[/name] who goes by [name]Gill[/name]. Also my Uncle [name]Tom[/name]'s real name is [name]Raymond[/name], but second name is [name]Thomas[/name] but is known by everyone as [name]Tom[/name].
At school I’ve had three good friends that go by their nicknames, by their friends, family and teachers. There was [name]Rhiannon[/name] who is known as Nonny. [name]Cecily[/name] who is known as [name]Cissy[/name], and [name]Elinor[/name] that goes by [name]Ellie[/name].
Some other people I know with nicknames are called;
[name]Lucinda[/name]- [name]Luci[/name]
[name]Georgina[/name]- [name]Gina[/name]
[name]Andrew[/name]- [name]Drew[/name]
[name]Joanne[/name]- [name]Jo[/name]
[name]Michael[/name]- [name]Mike[/name]
[name]Kathleen[/name]- [name]Cate[/name] (Yes with a C)
[name]Angharad[/name]- [name]Annie[/name]
[name]Angharad[/name]- [name]Adi[/name]
[name]Angharad[/name]- [name]Angie[/name]
[name]Marilyn[/name]- [name]Mal[/name]
