I came across the name [name]ILARIA[/name] in my search to name my 2nd daughter due in 2 months. I was wondering what everyone thought of the name. My 1st daughter’s name is [name]Gianna[/name].
[name]Ilaria[/name] (pronounced \i-la-ria\ OR \il-ar-ia. [name]Ilaria[/name] is Latin and means “cheerful”. It is predominantly used in the Italian and Spanish languages. [name]Ilaria[/name] is a variant of [name]Hillary[/name] (English).
[name]Do[/name] you feel this name would be mispronounced frequently? I am still considering [name]Alaina[/name] as my first choice but am still searching as my husband is not sold on [name]Alaina[/name]. Thanks for your help once again!
[name]Ilaria[/name] is pretty and different. I would pronounce it il-AHR-ee-uh. [name]Alaina[/name] is nice too, though I prefer the [name]Elena[/name] (prn. eh-[name]LAY[/name]-nuh) spelling since it’s more traditional. I think that [name]Ilaria[/name] actually goes better with [name]Gianna[/name] than [name]Alaina[/name] does. I guess it feels more exotic. Another name that immediately came to mind is [name]Alma[/name], which means “soul” in Latin. [name]Gianna[/name] and [name]Alma[/name] sound great together. [name]Just[/name] something to consider!
I think this is a very cute name! Though, I must be honest, the first thing that came to my mind was “malaria” before I read the post and how you pronounce it. After seeing how it’s pronounced, I do like it. But based on where my mind immediatley went right when i saw the name, I’m not sure that I’d use it. Of course – that could just be my crazy mind! Lol — if you love it, use it! I do think it’s great when pronounced correctly!!! :o)
Thanks for your feedback. I think you may have hit on part of the problem I’m having with the name [name]Alaina[/name] (no matter what spelling is used). I’m still 70% sure of the name but it’s just not sounding exotic or maybe ethnic enough beside [name]Gianna[/name]. I also keep thinking of the name [name]Elaine[/name] which sounds so old fashioned to me (probably because it was the name of a mother of a childhood friend). With the name [name]Alaina[/name], I do love that I can use the nn [name]Ali[/name] or [name]Laina[/name].
Thanks also for the suggestion of [name]Alma[/name] … unfortunately [name]Alma[/name] is a city in Wisconsin which we live close to and I can’t get over that fact.
OMG …malaria? LMAO … not good! I don’t think I could burden my child with that association for the rest of her life! Hopefully no one else will think that but now that you’ve mentioned I see why you thought it.
Malaria was the first thing I though of too, sorry. I think [name]Elena[/name] matches better with [name]Gianna[/name] than [name]Alaina[/name] does, but I see what you’re saying about it seeming more ordinary than [name]Gianna[/name]. [name]How[/name] about:
[name]Chiara[/name]
[name]Simona[/name]
[name]Bettina[/name]
[name]Marcella[/name] prn with ‘ch’ sound is so lovely imo
When I was eight or so I read a book series about unicorns where one of the characters was named ‘Illyra’ [ih lear uh]. I always thought it was a beautiful name. It might be an alternative to [name]Ilaria[/name]?
I really like it.
It’s unique and different without being too out there.
And I totally think it flows really well with [name]Gianna[/name], and I think it’s better then [name]Alaina[/name].
Thanks to everyone for their feedback! Guess I just loved the way the name looked on the screen and didn’t say it out-loud enough to realize it had huge teasing potential. Isn’t it a shame that when we name our precious children we also must protect them from bullies who wish to inflict hurt on them just because their name may rhyme with something else unfavorable. It’s very unfortunate … however, I won’t be using [name]Ilaria[/name].
So now I’m back to [name]Alaina[/name]. I love the spelling because it gives me the opportunity to use [name]Aly[/name]/[name]Ali[/name] and [name]Laina[/name]/[name]Lainy[/name] as nicknames. However, I guess I just need reassurance that it actually fits with [name]Gianna[/name]. Is there maybe another name that offers the same sort of nn’s, but is a little more exotic? I love [name]Alexandria[/name] but I have two close friends whose daughters are already name that. Also, [name]Alessandra[/name] is way to close to [name]Alexandria[/name] so that name is out as well. Anything else out there?
Alianora nn [name]Ali[/name] / [name]Nora[/name]
[name]Alinah[/name] ([name]El[/name] in nah) nn [name]Ali[/name]
[name]Aline[/name]
[name]Adelaine[/name] nn [name]Addie[/name] / [name]Lainey[/name]
[name]Violaine[/name] nn [name]Vi[/name] / [name]Laine[/name]/ [name]Lainey[/name]
Alianora nn [name]Ali[/name] / [name]Nora[/name] – [name]Love[/name] nn [name]Ali[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] but this name seems made up to me. Also, the pronunciation ([name]AH[/name] lee ah [name]NOR[/name] ah) seems like too much. I had [name]Alia[/name] on my short list as well as [name]Norah[/name]/[name]Nora[/name] but again, not sure how I like either with [name]Gianna[/name].
[name]Alinah[/name] ([name]El[/name] in nah) nn [name]Ali[/name] – Again, love [name]Ali[/name], but should’ve mentioned, the major hospitals in our area are named [name]Allina[/name] (which people pronounce either A-line-ah or A-leen-a) which could also pose an issue with [name]Alaina[/name].
[name]Aline[/name] – same as above
[name]Adelaine[/name] nn [name]Addie[/name] / [name]Lainey[/name] – Like this but is it too plain/old fashioned beside [name]Gianna[/name]?
[name]Violaine[/name] nn [name]Vi[/name] / [name]Laine[/name]/ [name]Lainey[/name] – Reminds me of violin.
Sounds like there is hope … just need to keep exploring names.
I really like [name]Alaina[/name] with the nn [name]Ali[/name] / [name]Lainey[/name]. Would you consider naming her [name]Ali[/name]/[name]Ally[/name] or [name]Laine[/name]/ [name]Lainey[/name]?
Ooh! I like this too. I can see why some people are going to Malaria, but I don’t see it at all. I really like these sort of names, so that could be a reason I am so drawn to this choice. I also think [name]Marina[/name] could be a cool alternative!
I would consider [name]Ally[/name], but I don’t feel it’s substantial enough as a name. [name]Just[/name] seems like a nickname to me as well as [name]Laine[/name]/[name]Lainey[/name]. I was thinking [name]Alia[/name] nn [name]Ali[/name] but I just can’t get [name]Alaina[/name] out of my head even though I’m not confident it sounds perfect with [name]Gianna[/name].

Illyra is very pretty pronounced ih lear uh … but since the whole malaria thing came up with [name]Ilaria[/name], I look at Illyra and just see the “Ill” at the beginning and think sickness.
I went to high school with a bunch of [name]Alison[/name]'s/[name]Alyson[/name]'s so this name seems very 80’s/90’s to me. Although it does offer the [name]Ali[/name]/[name]Aly[/name] nn … just don’t think it holds up beside [name]Gianna[/name].
I really like it - I think it’s pretty and goes well with [name]Gianna[/name]. [name]Alaina[/name] doesn’t fit with [name]Gianna[/name] quite like [name]Ilaria[/name] does IMHO, but if you both really like it then I don’t see a problem there. Since your DH isn’t sold on it, though, maybe you should go with something else.
I don’t think of malaria at all when I see [name]Ilaria[/name].
