It feels as though every time I ask for name suggestions in Nameberry, we go through the same cycle of names.
What are some names that you rarely see on Nameberry that fit the old-fashioned style and should be suggested more often?
I think [name_f]Calla[/name_f], [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f], Alienore, [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], and [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] are a few.
I think the names in your signature (and many other users’) are pretty well-known, so if asked for suggestions to match the signature, people will suggest familiar names that have similar qualities to the ones on the OP’s list.
The more unusual the names in the signature, the more unusual the suggestions will become.
Still, here are some names that I’d like to see a little more often on here, I feel like they may be some great alternatives for someone looking for less popular (on here) choices:
Araminta
Blanche
Carlotta
Davina
Dorothy
Eleonora
Elvina
Frida
Genoveva
Ida
Lavina
Leonore
Lucretia
Millicent
Minna
Nella
Ness
Nina
Odelia / Odilia
Odessa
Ottilia
Ottoline
Viola
I have to say that I agree with @otri - your signature is full of gorgeous, classy names for both girls and boys, but they are all very much NB “staples”, as you say, so it’s little wonder you’re getting suggestions in a similar vein.
But I do like the question and the challenge! Vintagesque names I’d love to see more of are:
Of course! My post was poorly worded, and I apologize for that. Obviously I don’t blame others for suggesting names that are my style! And thank you so much for the lovely, gorgeous names.
Second the suggestion of [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f], I have such a crush on her. Other old fashioned picks that I don’t see tossed around the forums much anymore include [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], [name_f]Colleen[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], and [name_f]Nancy[/name_f].
My favourite old fashioned (mostly old people names though) are:
disclaimer: I’m European ([name_m]French[/name_m] and danish) so my idea of old fashioned names might be a bit different from the American idea of one
Avramiel (my old teacher who’s gotta be like 80 or so now, never heard of this name anywhere else though)
[name_f]Orelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Winnifred[/name_f]
Solvår (my grandmothers sister)
Maugalie
Alvilda (my grandmother)
Magdalénienne
And my favourite:
Oliphie (my great grandmother whom I was named after even though they named me ophelie because they they thought oliphie was a bit too weird)
I’ve recently read another post similar to this, that berries suggest the same names over and over again, and I just wanted to mention that there are only so many names that match the vibe of someone’s signature, especially if said signature is very classy/classic/vintage/familiar in style. I think mentioning that you’d (not you specifically but people in general) like some suggestions beyond [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f], that are less heard-of will help
And thank you, while I wouldn’t personally use many of them, I think they’re lovely and might appeal to some people on here!
