Your English is great. Have you considered something like [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] or [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Adam[/name_m]? It seems like the best compromise. He gets his family name and you get your favorite name.

haha, I agree! As soon as you said English wasn’t your native language, I was like, Erm, well, it’s pretty great for it not being your native language! I’m trying to learn [name_m]French[/name_m] and feel the same time every time I attempt to speak that.

If you don’t like [name_m]John[/name_m] or [name_m]Jack[/name_m], you shouldn’t have to use it. I mean, I respect family traditions, but your child’s name is as much your decision as his, and if you don’t like [name_m]John[/name_m] you shouldn’t have to use [name_m]John[/name_m]. [name_m]How[/name_m] does he feel about [name_m]Adam[/name_m]? If he likes it, I think something like [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] would be perfect. [name_m]Adam[/name_m] seems to work pretty internationally to me (although, I’m not sure about [name_m]Adam[/name_m] in French? It’s quite close to madame, though, in sound, so I wouldn’t think it’d be too hard to use in a [name_m]French[/name_m]-speaking cultures), so that would fit that, which seems most important in your criteria to me, especially if you’ll be moving around internationally quite a lot. [name_u]Jean[/name_u] honors his family’s [name_m]John[/name_m] tradition, and honors your [name_m]French[/name_m]-Canadian ancestry. A perfect choice! [name_m]Paul[/name_m] is really nice, too, but [name_m]Adam[/name_m] and [name_u]Jean[/name_u]/[name_m]John[/name_m] seem most meaningful, so I would go with [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] if at all possible.

[name_f]Bonne[/name_f] chance!

I agree that you shouldn’t use any name that you don’t feel great about. You could do a combination of [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] or [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] and call him [name_m]Paul[/name_m], or J.P. I don’t know whether you will ever live in a primarily English speaking area, but my name is [name_u]Jean[/name_u] (like the male name) but I am a woman. I know that my parents made the mistake, but potentially [name_u]Jean[/name_u] could be mistaken for a girls name in a non-[name_m]French[/name_m] speaking area. I like the idea of keeping with tradition and understand the factors that make your situation complicated. Good luck with your decision.

Ps. The folks on this site are exceptionally creative with names so I hope you get some help here!

To southern.maple- Thank you! I think that [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Adam[/name_m] has a better rhythm than [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m], though I will try to convince my husband to use [name_m]John[/name_m] as a middle name. It might be our best option.

To ashthedreamer- [name_f]Merci[/name_f] beaucoup! He likes [name_m]Adam[/name_m] fine. I think that he prefers [name_m]Paul[/name_m] to [name_m]Adam[/name_m], and I the opposite. [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_u]Jean[/name_u]… I am feeling less sure every day that [name_u]Jean[/name_u] is “the name” for us! I do like [name_m]Adam[/name_m], though we’ve barely just begun the search.

To opelle- Really! I have never met a woman named [name_u]Jean[/name_u]. In [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_u]Jean[/name_u] is masculine. [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] would be the feminine. I will ask my husband, because I never knew of this before. As you see, this is the use of Nameberry!

Okay…[name_u]Jean[/name_u] is out. Unfortunately, my husband thinks that it is a girl’s name. This is what happens when you marry an Englishman! On a related note, he also dislikes [name_f]Jeanne[/name_f] for a girl. I guess we’ll be using [name_m]John[/name_m] as a middle name. I have managed to convince him of that, he is just worried that his parents might be a little hurt. But my in-laws are reasonable enough, and I think that they will understand.

If it helps, here is his current list of boys’ names:

  • [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Harry[/name_m]
  • [name_u]Robin[/name_u]
  • [name_u]James[/name_u]

And this is mine:

  • [name_m]Adam[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Abel[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Ruben[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]

As of this morning.

I love [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], [name_m]Paul[/name_m], [name_m]Abel[/name_m] and [name_m]Ruben[/name_m] a lot!

I think [name_m]Ruben[/name_m] seems like it would work very well internationally and it is a very handsome name in my opinion

[name_m]Ruben[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] rhymes a bit but it isn’t a big problem- maybe [name_m]Ruben[/name_m] [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] instead?

[name_m]Abel[/name_m] is also lovely, it is not very common in [name_f]England[/name_f] yet will be easily pronounced. It is very distinctive- he will certainly be the only [name_m]Abel[/name_m] in his class, which to me is a good thing

To gr19: I think we will be using [name_m]John[/name_m] as a middle name for sure. I like the sound that [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] has, but many of my husband’s names, [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] and [name_m]John[/name_m] included, are ones that my francophone relatives struggle to say. I have talked him out of [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] for the time that’s being.

I love [name_m]Adam[/name_m] and [name_m]John[/name_m]!

To boyandgirl: Thank you! I think that [name_m]Adam[/name_m] is our favorite at the time.

Closing this thread, and thank you for the help.
