[name]How[/name] important do you think the last name is when it comes to deciding? For instance, I really like the names [name]Thora[/name] and [name]Annora[/name] (obviously I would use one or the other, not both), but the last name would be almost exactly like Shore. Are [name]Thora[/name] Shore and [name]Annora[/name] Shore automatically out of the running? [name]How[/name] about names ending in “S” or “S” sound, such as [name]Iris[/name] Shore or [name]Eloise[/name] Shore? Flow is very important to me, but I’m MOSTLY concerned with the flow of the first and middle! What do YOU guys think??
I actually think flow of the first and last names is more important than flow of the first and middle. Unless you’re planning to call her by both her first and middle names all the time, she will be known mostly as firstname lastname.
I’m not the biggest fan of [name]Thora[/name], but [name]Annora[/name] is OK. [name]Annora[/name] Shore is a little bit rhymey, but I don’t think it’s too bad. I think the s-S thing is worse just because it’s a bit harder to say, but that’s just my opinion.
Flow of first and last are most important, imo. A person is most commonly known by their first and last name. With the last name Shore, I would eliminate given names containing the “ore” sound. So, no to [name]Thora[/name] Shore and no to [name]Annora[/name] Shore. However, to me /s/ and /sh/ are different enough that, while perhaps not ideal, they would work together. [name]Eloise[/name] Shore and [name]Iris[/name] Shore sound fine to me.
I think flow between first and last much more important than first and middle because middles aren’t used often.
I think [name]Iris[/name] Shore and [name]Eloise[/name] Shore are fine because the first names end with an S sound, but the last name starts with a Sh sound. It is different enough that it is ok. I would avoid first names that end in the Sh sound.
I think [name]Annora[/name] Shore is fine. [name]Thora[/name] Shore not so much, but it is still usable.
I think [name]Annora[/name] and [name]Thora[/name] Shore are fine because the ending doesn’t rhyme and they have a different number of syllables, though [name]Annora[/name] is better than [name]Thora[/name]. This might be just me, but [name]Eloise[/name] Shore and [name]Iris[/name] Shore are off- they sound like Eloishe Ore and Irish Ore to me.
I actually like [name]Thora[/name] Shore, though it is a bit rhyme it reminds me of a super-hero name.
But I agree with pp’ers. Fn-Ln flow is incredibly important. It’s going to be your kids’ calling card for most/all of their life.
First name and last name flow is very important in my opinion because that’s what you’ll get called in school, at work, etc… the middle name flowing isn’t as important for that reason. Like right now I’m called by my first and last name ([name]Diana[/name] S) at work because there are 2 [name]Diana[/name]'s.
So for me [name]Thora[/name] Shore and [name]Annora[/name] Shore are just too rhymey and thus sound like comic book characters/cartoony. On the the other hand, [name]Eloise[/name] Shore sounds fine, while [name]Iris[/name] Shore doesn’t since two word names make the name sound more like a place name, for example “I’m going to [name]Iris[/name] Shore today” sounds like someone is going to the beach… Though I’m assuming Shore isn’t your actual last name and thus it could work.
I agree with this first and last should flow to an extent. When I was in high school for an athletics carnival when they were calling out those who qualified for the finals, they said I.Crouche. Which sounds like “I crouch”…a few of the kids were laughing.
I’m with pps that first and last is more important than first and middle, but I like the whole name to flow as well. My name actually starts with the S/soft C sound, so names that end in X and S are out for me because they blend too much [name]Max[/name] S___ sounds like [name]Mack[/name] S____ and [name]Caius[/name] S___ just gets cumbersome to say or ends up sounding like [name]Caia[/name] S____. If your last name starts with Sh, though, it is a completely different story – they don’t blend as much. I think depending on the name, it might be a bit cumbersome: [name]Eloise[/name] Shore does sound a little cumbersome, but [name]Lucas[/name] Shore sounds lovely. You are lucky enough to be able to use all those names I love and can’t use!
That said, [name]Thora[/name] does sound a bit rhymey, but I like the rhyme in [name]Annora[/name] Shore. Something about it is pleasing to my ear. Also, I agree with pp that [name]Iris[/name] Shore sounds too much like a place for me, but some people might like that sort of feel.
I like the songy sound of [name]Thora[/name] Shore, but at the same time the common -hor- syllable is not favourable. [name]Annora[/name] is much better.
Personally, I like the sound of names that run together because it all sounds like one name, one label, one title if you will. Like [name]Natalie[/name] [name]Elena[/name], or [name]Henry[/name] [name]Reese[/name]. Many think it sounds waaay off, but I love it.
[name]Eloise[/name] Shore is lovely to me.
So my view on flow is different than many others.
I think it is important not to rhyme. So I would say [name]Thora[/name] Shore is out but [name]Annora[/name] Shore not as much. [name]Don[/name]'t think it is a problem for [name]Iris[/name] or [name]Eloise[/name] at all. [name]Just[/name] be sure your name does not accidentally create a word sentence since your last name is also a word - like the sea shore…unless that isn’t really your name.
[name]Annora[/name] Shore is fine, but [name]Thora[/name] Shore is a bit abrupt. I also think you can get away with S sounds. [name]Trish[/name] Shore would bug me, but [name]Eloise[/name] Shore is nice.
However, the actors [name]Rafe[/name] and [name]Joseph[/name] Fiennes are doing well for themselves with a blendy name. So don’t let it stress you out too much if you are absolutely in love with something that is not perfect.
I agree with the others that say yes/ok to [name]Annora[/name] more than [name]Thora[/name], i think it’s the 3 syllables that make it more flowing.
[name]Iris[/name] Shore doesn’t flow as nicely as [name]Eloise[/name] Shore.
My boyfriend’s last name is St____, and [name]Eloise[/name] is on my top 5 list pretty much every week, but the only reason it bumps down in rating is because of the sound- [name]Eloise[/name] St____ becomes Elowee St____. [name]Elowen[/name] is actually on my list, a bit further down, so that may work instead, but how i love [name]Eloise[/name].
I have a few weird preferences that aren’t exactly STRONG opinions but pervasive. Borfriend’s last name has the vowels E and A in that order and i have a sublist of my favorites that also follow that order with their vowels ([name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] (again the s-S sound though!) as well as flipped, a-e. I’m weird like that, but i like some relativity in the letters used. (for example, i like that my first name and last name share overarching sounds but dont like that i have 2 e’s in my first name and none in my last name. Weird, i know!)
I also like FN’s with a different number of syllables than the LN, so for me it’s 1 and 3 syllables preferred.
Agree with the others: flow of first to last is more important. I would not pick a near-rhyming set like you are suggesting. Alliteration I often like; rhyming, not so much.
I really like the [name]Thora[/name] Shore combo (: Sounds meant for fame (:
FN-LN is 100% more important than FN-MN.
With girls I also consider initials ‘now’ and possible future Eg [name]Fiona[/name] [name]Anne[/name] [name]Smith[/name] FAS is OK but what if she marries a [name]Thompson[/name]? FAT?
[name]Annora[/name] Shore is OK- but I think you could find a better match.
I really like [name]Annora[/name] Shore, it sounds like a folk song!
I love [name]Annora[/name] Shore, but then I quite like rhyming in names!
Thanks everyone! I was hoping someone would assure me that I don’t have to let go of some of my favorite names because of the last name, but I guess that’s not gonna happen haha! Maybe I can convince my boyfriend to change his last name before we have kids
