I love [name]Guy[/name]! It seems cool and unexpected to me.
My impression of [name]Guy[/name] is ‘some dude’.
For me, it’d be like naming a girl ‘[name]Gal[/name]’.
I think it’d be okay in the MN position, but still a bit blah.
My husband loves [name]Guy[/name], but I just can’t get on board with it. [name]Guy[/name] Fawkes, [name]Guy[/name] Smiley, [name]Guy[/name] Noir… not to mention all the obnoxious “Hey, guy”-style jokes he’d inevitably tire of. It’s one of those names that I love the look of, and I even like the sound of, but I just can’t do because of the noun/name thing.
I just don’t like that it is a synonym for man or boy. It seems too generic. Although I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Guy[/name] [name]Pearce[/name]!
Part of my mind likes [name]Guy[/name]. It seems hip, unexpected and very European. But that’s the part of my mind that can get past the ‘some dude’ noun usage and see it as a name. I don’t think it would actually work well in real life, at least here in the U.S. where we say, “Hey, guys!” all the time.
I used to know a teenage [name]Guy[/name], and everyone he introduced himself to thought he was kidding when he told them his name. Naming your son [name]Guy[/name] is like naming him Dude. There was a time when [name]Guy[/name] worked as a name, but that time has passed.
Who’d name their kid that? There’s no way a guy named [name]Guy[/name] can go on to have a successful career.
Here comes President [name]Guy[/name] [name]Smith[/name]! Nope.
Almost as bad a name as [name]Mitt[/name], while I’m on the subject of presidency… Or rather, non-presidency.
Achievement, vitality, strategy, zeal, leadership
Our whole family has strep, and my BF and I met a [name]Guy[/name] this weekend while at urgent care. Our boys, both 7, thought his name was hilarious. I’m so glad they minded their manners in front of him because, once we got home, we were treated to about four hours of “jokes” about a family made up of [name]Guy[/name], Lady, Boy, and Girl. Oh, and their dog: Dog.
I just don’t think it works anymore. Maybe you could pull it off in French ([name]GEE[/name], rather than GIE) but that would be crazy hard to enforce.
Thanks for the comments. They basically matched my fears that it’s just too darn “generic” – I find it rather handsome and interesting, but I can’t get over the “some ole guy” type feelings. I think it would also be especially cutesy or ridiculous if he had 6 sisters I may keep it on the list for a mn because I kinda like the quirky nature of the name in general and it has a slight irony to it, if we would ever have a son.
My boyfriend’s grandfather’s name is [name]Guy[/name]. I’d wondered how a very old school Italian man got that name. [name]Just[/name] last week I found out his name is [name]Gaetano[/name]! Why would anyone drop that name for the plain old “[name]Guy[/name]”…
That is my fathers name (pronounced the French way) and he has never had any issues. I like the name, sounds a bit like a nickname though. I would never use it pronounced the English way though!
