Impression of the nickname Joss?

Our son will be named [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] and that isnt changing, but [name]Joseph[/name] isn’t a name I would pick on my own and names are super important to me so it is definitely a compromise. So I am hoping for a nickname that I do love. I keep coming back to [name]Joss[/name], I wonder what your impression would be.

I am also considering [name]Jack[/name] (it is actually a nn for [name]Joseph[/name] as well as [name]John[/name]) but would maybe cause family to raise an eyebrow?[name]Jack[/name] was my great grandfather though he was a [name]John[/name].

If I had my choice of any name I would use [name]Johnathan[/name] or [name]Jasper[/name] (love this but needs a hebrew name )

Someone suggested [name]Jody[/name] but I just see it as feminine, don’t you?

Jagger -initials will be JAG but I am thinking Jagger is so not my style and maybe pushing it a lot

I like [name]Joss[/name], though I think it may get mistaken for [name]Josh[/name] at times. I know of a [name]Jonathan[/name] nn [name]Joss[/name] but I think [name]Joseph[/name] nn [name]Joss[/name] works even better.

Other possible nicknames for [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] (some more contrived than others)

[name]Jose[/name]
[name]Jet[/name]
Seph/[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Joe[/name]
[name]Joey[/name]
[name]Joar[/name] (sort of rhymes with [name]Noah[/name] - first two letters of [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Arthur[/name])

And I see [name]Jody[/name] as more unisex in that spelling. [name]Jodie[/name]/[name]Jodi[/name] is definitely girl, but I’m seeing [name]Jody[/name] on men more and more. There was a British Paralympic cyclist [name]Jody[/name] Cundy, and there’s a British actor [name]Jody[/name] [name]Latham[/name], both male. It’s not unheard of on boys, and as a nickname I think it could work.

[name]Joss[/name] is… okay for me. I know it has more masculine origins, and [name]Joss[/name] Whedon is still popular, but I love [name]Jocelyn[/name] nn [name]Joss[/name] for a girl, so I can’t really see it on a boy. I love @essjay’s suggestion of [name]Jet[/name], though! And I adore your idea of [name]Jack[/name]. [name]Jack[/name]'s so handsome, and if it honors a beloved family member, why not? I’ve never heard of [name]Jack[/name] as a nn for [name]Joseph[/name], but if C.S. [name]Lewis[/name] can get [name]Jack[/name], I don’t know why a [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] couldn’t.

Good luck!

I also think of [name]Joss[/name] Whedon. As a big [name]Buffy[/name]/Firefly fan, I say go for it.

I would call him [name]Joseph[/name]. It is a fantastic classic. [name]Joss[/name] just makes me think of [name]Joss[/name] [name]Stone[/name]. All girl to me.

I like [name]Joss[/name] for [name]Joseph[/name].

I really like [name]Joseph[/name], I also think [name]Joss[/name] is a lovely nickname.

I’m terribly partial to the nn [name]Joss[/name], but alas, not to any [name]Jos[/name]- names. From my research it seems to be a traditional nn for [name]Joseph[/name]. [name]Joss[/name] Whedon (full name [name]Joseph[/name]!) did pave the way to possible popularity and it certainly hasn’t slowed him down!

[name]Joss[/name] Whedon is the first thing that popped into my head.

I automatically think [name]Joss[/name] Whedon, so I think it works. I imagine [name]Joss[/name] as more of an artsy type of guy.

I [name]Love[/name] [name]Joss[/name].

I love [name]Joss[/name] for [name]Joseph[/name] (also a Whedon fan - [name]Joseph[/name] is his full name as well). An alternative: Jeph ([name]JoesEPH[/name]), although it might be mistaken for [name]Jeff[/name]/[name]Jeffrey[/name].

I like [name]Joseph[/name] with the nickname [name]Joss[/name]! [name]Joss[/name] is nothing but masculine to me. [name]Jagger[/name] is a pretty cool nickname as well.

I like [name]Joss[/name] as a nn for [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Joss[/name] Whedon is my association & it’s a positive one. I adore [name]Joseph[/name] nn Seph though, swoon.

I had similar thoughts. I know [name]Joss[/name] Whedon gives it a great male connection, but I can’t help but think of singer [name]Joss[/name] [name]Stone[/name]. Also, my mom’s boyfriend’s five year old daughter is named [name]Josslyn[/name] (not sure of the spelling) and a lot of people call her [name]Joss[/name] so that’s all I see.

[name]Joss[/name] is one of the few nicknames I think works equally well for a boy or girl.

I’m actually in a similar tho kind of reversed situation. I want to use the nn [name]Joe[/name] but, tho I like the name [name]Joseph[/name], I wanted something a bit different. [name]Hence[/name] [name]Josiah[/name].

I actually really like [name]Joe[/name], but I’m a fan of “regular guy” names on little boys. I think they’re fresh among the Kadens and Aidens and Sebastians nowadays.

[name]Jack[/name] is a bit trendy to me, but I do like it a lot. [name]Jagger[/name] not so much, altho maybe just Jag would be cool? I quite like that, actually.

In real life, the only [name]Joss[/name] I know is a girl whose full name is [name]Jocelyn[/name], so I tend to think of this as a girl’s name. For [name]Joseph[/name], I just like [name]Joe[/name], which has a nice understated sound to it, but without anything “average” about it. As a little boy, I’d call him [name]Joey[/name].

Re: [name]Jody[/name], I have known a male [name]Jody[/name], but he got a lot of teasing for his name and as a slightly below-average-height little boy, got into a lot of fights (maybe to defend his name?)

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Joss[/name] as a nn for [name]Joseph[/name]! So excellent. I know a lot of little boys who go by [name]Yossi[/name] as a nn for [name]Yosef[/name], so [name]Joss[/name] for [name]Joseph[/name] looks right to me.

[name]Joseph[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] is a great name! And I think [name]Joss[/name] is a great nn for [name]Joseph[/name]! I’m not familiar with [name]Joss[/name] Whedon (though it does sound vaguely familiar), but I will admit that for the first … year or so after I heard of [name]Joss[/name] [name]Stone[/name], I thought she was a boy. I hadn’t heard her music, obviously, just about her and I assumed from the name [name]Joss[/name] that she was a boy. So obviously I find it incredibly masculine.

Also … this may be a reach, but nicknames are all about what feels right to the parents, so … what if you called him [name]Jasper[/name]? All the sounds are there in [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Arthur[/name], and it kind of sounds [name]Jasper[/name] if you say it fast … just throwing it out there since you like it so much but can’t have it. Could be another option where you both get what you want.

[name]Just[/name] wanted to add, since you said you love the name [name]Jasper[/name] though you need a Hebrew name… “Sapir” (sah-PEER, it means saphire) is pretty close sounding to [name]Jasper[/name], and is a very Israeli name. Maybe you could use the [name]Jasper[/name] you love, and have his Hebrew name as Sapir?
