Impressions of the name Vela

Hello!
Came across the name [name]Vela[/name] recently and am wondering what impression it makes on you. It is a name from part of the constellation the [name]Argo[/name] Navis and most often states that it is Latin for “sails.” It has a more basic Latin root meaning veil or to cover. I have also found it to mean fame or glory in Slavic languages and in Spanish it means candle. We would pronounce it the Latin way- VAY-luh. Thank you for your opinions and any other similar suggestions.

Before reading, I was wondering what the meaning of [name]Vela[/name] was. Now I am sure that it is related to [name]Velia[/name] (Italian, “concealed”) given the close relationship in meanings cover, veil, concealed. [name]Velia[/name] can also be a shortening of Juvelia (“youth”/“youthful”) although both names are very uncommon. Overall I think [name]Vela[/name] and [name]Velia[/name] are pretty sounding names.

[name]Just[/name] seeing it written, I would have thought to pronounce it Vee-lah, which I don’t really love the sound of, but now that I read it’s supposed to be Vay-luh, I think it’s quite pretty! Different, but not overly weird or difficult.

My first guess at the pronunciation was like [name]Bella[/name] with a V. It makes me think of velvet or veil so my overall first impression are good. It’s exotic yet familiar. I like the international appeal of it too. It’s great the name has a good meaning in many languages.

It reminds me of the Veela from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] It has a nice sound but I’m not sure I like it.

I have a friend named [name]Vela[/name], pronounced Vay-la. I am not sure where she is from originally but she has a beautiful Eastern European accent and was raised in Ethiopia. She is a lovely person so I have all good thoughts on the name.

I think it’s very pretty. When I looked at it, I pronounced it “vay-la”. I love the names [name]Vale[/name] and [name]Veda[/name]-- reminds a little of those if you are looking for something similar. [name]Vela[/name] though-- I might have a new name crush.

I was going to bring up the veela from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], too. If you didn’t know, they are devastatingly beautiful women with their own magic apart from that of wizards. They are also frequently tempermental and turn ugly when angered. The article on the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] wiki says veela are nymph like creatures in Slavic mythology and have been compared with Greek sirens.

So, this is what I first thought of when I saw [name]Vela[/name]. I think it’s pretty, but I’m not sure I could personally get past the Veela thing. [name]Just[/name] my opinion, though!
