I love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], but my SO is reluctant. Any other ideas for us?
What I love about it: Because [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is way more popular than I would normally consider, I feel it needs to be paired with something unusual and more daring. I see [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] as sweet and bookish but with definite spunk. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] adds sophistication and strength, but also something darker, more daring and moody. I also love the flow/sound/syllable count with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. Our last name is VERY short (rhymes with [name_u]Poe[/name_u] but begins with M) so a 3-4 syllable middle just sounds better with a 2 syllable first.
What my SO doesn’t like about it: He hears androgyny and drama. His taste tends to be a tad more traditional than mine, and I think this one is just a little out there for him. I do agree with him that it doesn’t have the “prettiest” sound.
Other things already on our list to consider:
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] Iverine
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Indira[/name_f]
I would love your take on these names, plus suggestions.
Oh, [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is hauntingly beautiful! If you really can’t get him to love it I think [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is a lovely number two. All your combos are great and have a wonderful spark, so I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them”
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Celestia[/name_f]? [name_f]Celestia[/name_f] is alot less heavy and has the sky and heavenly reference. (I know the -el repitition so close together may be abit much)
[name_f]Capella[/name_f] and [name_m]Pollux[/name_m] are some of the brightest stars in the night sky.
You may not like the but I’m just throwing stuff out there.
Interesting…. from your title I thought you were exchanging [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] for [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and I just thought you were insane. I love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]. (I don’t really like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] all that much).
However…. I think giving [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] a really strong, vibrant and lesser used mn is an awesome idea.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Zenovia[/name_f]/[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Iphigeneia[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] Despoina
Not a fan of [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]…it just makes me think ‘maid’. I think I get what you’re going for, though. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_f]Calista[/name_f], [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_f]Oriana[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]…any hits?
Lots of votes for [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f]!
giinkies, thanks for the suggestions. [name_f]Juno[/name_f] is too short and rhymes with our last name (as do so many good ones!). [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] is a bit too sharp and sly for me. [name_f]Celestia[/name_f] is something we had earlier considered but nixed. [name_f]Capella[/name_f] and [name_m]Pollux[/name_m] are interesting but I just don’t like the sound as much as [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f].
lexiem, yay for a vote to keep [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]! I love it too. Alycone from your list is intriguing, I’m going to put it on my list to rattle around in my brain for a few days.
rkrd, you definitely get the vibe I’m going for. We have several other things on our list right now that we’re just trying to get the right pairings; one of the other firsts we’re considering is [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. We also have [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] (I prefer this to [name_f]Zara[/name_f] which just reminds me of the store) on our long list. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] for some reason has never done it for me, I think it’s because the flower was never one of my favorites. [name_f]Calista[/name_f] is pretty but not for us, same with [name_f]Oriana[/name_f]. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] has the right feel but we prefer [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] (another first on our list) and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] or [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] would go nicely. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] repeats some sounds (and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] feels more sophisticated than [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], to me) but sounds very pretty too.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is just smashing, though. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]'s such a marvelous name!
If it counts, [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is usable because growing up I knew a girl with this first name. I didn’t like it but that’s just the type of name it is: a love it or hate it name and some people absolutely loved her name.
So if you can handle the naysayers, you will get many compliments for this name.
brigid, totally agree about the repeated sounds in [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] are actually not in contention to be paired with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], they’re on my list for other names. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], to me, needs something much more powerful and unusual than these ones, beautiful as they are!
giinkies, I am totally cool with naysayers, as long as they aren’t her father
I am wondering if the repeated -uhl sound in [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f] is too much. I would venture to guess no, since I didn’t actually notice it until today despite staring at/saying this combo a fair amount. I actually say it more like ILL in [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and UHL in [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f], not to mention that in [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f] the UH sound is in a different syllable than the L…
@thunderbolt… I’m not actually sure of the pronunciation of [name_f]Pomeline[/name_f], so I can’t answer that question properly. But if there is any repition in sound, it is far enough apart that I don’t think it should be an issue.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is stunning, and I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], as [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is my top choice if I ever have a daughter.
