in love with an unusable name

So I fell in love with a completely unusable name. My S/O hates it, I know it shouldn’t be used, but I love the way it looks-- and the way it sounds when you don’t think about the fact that it’s a word already. And kind of an ugly word to be named, to boot.

It’s [name_u]Paine[/name_u].

And this is coming from someone who generally likes traditional type names. What I really need is something that gives the same feel and look as [name_u]Paine[/name_u] without being the word pain. Are there any names out there like that?

I kind of see what you mean!

[name_m]Byrne[/name_m] (also not the best sound, but further from the word in question)

Or [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] as pp suggested

Okay, I’m digging [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] by my partner says it sounds like a gay photographer’s name. Better than something hellishly emo like [name_u]Paine[/name_u], right?

If you like [name_u]Paine[/name_u] you might also like [name_m]Pan[/name_m] or [name_m]Penn[/name_m] (my first thought).

Other suggestions:
[name_m]Daine[/name_m] (I knew someone named “[name_u]Dane[/name_u]”)

I totally have an ex-bf whose middle name was [name_u]Paine[/name_u], not a family name or anything.

[name_u]Peyton[/name_u] or [name_m]Penn[/name_m] maybe.

My DHs boss is named [name_m]Bain[/name_m], great guy. I also have a friend with a handsome surfer teenage son called [name_u]Blaine[/name_u].

Maybe [name_m]Penn[/name_m]?

[name_u]Paine[/name_u] strikes me as…British? not hellishly emo. And [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] of [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] [name_m]Brosnan[/name_m]. Point being that people are going to have very different associations with names which is why associations/impressions are not a very important factor to me in choosing a name. At the same time DH vetoed Joule for a stupid association reason, so I feel your pain. Hah! [name_u]Paine[/name_u]. Punny.

I love [name_u]Paine[/name_u] because of the [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_u]Paine[/name_u] namesake. I prefer [name_u]Paine[/name_u] to many names today. Like [name_u]Messiah[/name_u], for example. And there have been people named [name_u]Paine[/name_u]/[name_m]Payne[/name_m]. Like [name_m]Payne[/name_m] [name_m]Stewart[/name_m], whose actual first name was [name_m]William[/name_m] but he chose to go by [name_m]Payne[/name_m].

[name_m]Locke[/name_m] ([name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Locke[/name_m])
[name_m]Teague[/name_m] (Close to [name_m]Tyge[/name_m] aka [name_m]Tycho[/name_m] Brahe)
[name_m]Darrow[/name_m] ([name_m]Clarence[/name_m] [name_m]Darrow[/name_m])

And finally if your partner is dogging all the names you like for some flimsy negative association reason, he should be coming up with ideas of his own for names so that you have the same opportunity.

Though I’m not sure the word association is much better- I love the name anyway!

Maybe [name_m]Piers[/name_m]?

I’d say to you partner, “and what’s wrong with a gay photographer?”

And then remind him that [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] [name_m]Brosnan[/name_m] played [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Bond[/name_m].

What about [name_u]Payton[/name_u]?

Not sure what’s wrong with a gay photographer, but a few more suggestions:
