So here’s a complicated problem ladies and gents… My husband and I are currently TTC but we are really struggling to talk about names without arguing. I like short snappy names because I come from a town where all names are shortened. My husband has a child with his ex whose name he loves… And which has 14 Syllables! Also he’s not keen on nicknames so it has to be the whole thing.
All of this is before I bring up the fact that I’m half Scottish half Irish… With a hard sounding voice that doesn’t agree with the long romantic names he likes. He however is half English and half french and draws out every letter of the short names I love!!
At present my short list consists of [name_m]Jake[/name_m], [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] for a boy and [name_f]Paige[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_u]Harley[/name_u] and [name_u]Raven[/name_u] for a girl.
My husband however… Is rooting for Elizabetha, hannahlise, [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
What I want to know is… [name_m]How[/name_m] did everyone else reach a decision?
What is the fourteen syllable name?
As a compromise for you and your husband, I would suggest perhaps looking for names that are long and flowy, like he likes, but that have the short snappy nicknames that you like. For instance, if you used the name [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m], you could call him [name_u]Max[/name_u] or [name_m]Ian[/name_m]. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] could be shortened to [name_u]Theo[/name_u], Ted, [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]. There are loads of names out there that can be shortened easily to your style.
No kids, but is there any possible way you can reach a compromise? You like short, snappy names, and all of his can be shortened in some way. Elizabetha can become [name_f]Liz[/name_f], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] can become [name_u]Theo[/name_u], etc. That seems like the easiest way to get what you both want. You get a short, easy to say name, and he gets a long, grandiose name to match his other child’s. He might not like nicknames, but what’s his problem with you using a nickname?
You could also play with combos to combine both of your preferred names in first/middle combos, that way one parent doesn’t have to sacrifice their favourite just so the other person is satiated. [name_u]Raven[/name_u] Hannahlise, [name_m]Maximilian[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]… That sort of thing. Best of luck!
Her full name is Geniveive-[name_f]Rose[/name_f]… With two long middle names and a double barrelled surname! I’ve always called her [name_f]Jenny[/name_f], which she likes but I can see her dad cringe when I say it.
