Sorry for repetitive descriptions!
[name_f]Love[/name_f]:
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]- I can imagine an elegant 19th-century noblewoman named this, but it’s totally usable in the 21st century too
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]- core classic, sophisticated and regal yet familiar and down-to-earth. A [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] could be anyone, from any era or level of society
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]- elegant, refined, feminine but strong, with tons of history and great associations (I love the connection to [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] of [name_f]Aquitaine[/name_f])
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]- vintage-chic, familiar but not popular, feels quite British
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]- dramatic, flashy, and fun, familiar but feels exotic and Italian
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]- I’d say it like [name_f]Helen[/name_f] with “ah” on the end, but both are pretty. Beautiful and feminine but strong, and also lots of historical/literary connections
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]- feminine but not frilly, classy and sophisticated but spunky and playful. [name_f]Empress[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] was a pretty cool historical figure.
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]- I couldn’t use this myself because I found her character submissive and weak, but I like the sound and the exciting, dramatic vibe
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]- playful-but-sophisticated, warm and friendly, charming and charismatic. [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] in As You Like It is one of my favourite [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] characters.
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]- dramatic, exciting, eye-catching, a real whirlwind. I think of [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] O’[name_f]Hara[/name_f], of course, a flawed but beautiful character, whom I love dearly and deeply in spite of everything.
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]- for me it’s the ultimate [name_f]East[/name_f]-meets-[name_u]West[/name_u] name, it’s daring and exotic Arabian desert adventures but also a spunky, popular, but always respectable British girl who moves in upper-class circles and knows how to have fun without stirring up trouble. [name_f]Zara[/name_f] [name_m]Phillips[/name_m] is one of my favourite royals, so I imagine a person like her.
Like:
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]- packs a lot of punch in just three letters
[name_f]Clarissa[/name_f]- feminine and a bit flouncy, without being froufrou
[name_f]Emma[/name_f]- dainty, delicate, sweet, but never excited me. I’m not too fond of [name_f]Emma[/name_f] Woodhouse either, found her a bit silly and not all too sensible.
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]- I like the connection to the Norse goddess, but this sounds rather cold and unwelcoming
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]- very Southern, it makes me think of the state
[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]- prim, proper, British, definitely upper-class
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]- solid and grounded, but while it’s definitely a girls’ name it doesn’t sound feminine enough for me
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]- cute, demure, a mix of respectable British primness and stylish [name_m]French[/name_m] flair
Dislike:
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]- it feels rather cold and unfriendly to me
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]- I tend to dislike names with long O sounds
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]- sounds cold and menacing to me, like a witch’s name
[name_f]Keziah[/name_f]- this seems trendy and misspelled to me, sorry if I’m mistaken
[name_f]Nancy[/name_f]- never heard of the [name_f]Nancy[/name_f]-boy connection. My first thought was [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] [name_u]Reagan[/name_u]. It seems a frumpy and old-lady-ish to me.
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]- harsh and grating to me
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]- same as [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], despite it being a NB favourite
Too cutesy but would make great nicknames (though I know some ARE full names):
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f])- and I don’t like the [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_m]Buchanan[/name_m] connection
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] (for any [name_f]El[/name_f]- or -ella name)
[name_f]Lena[/name_f] (for [name_f]Helena[/name_f]) (I know this can be a full name, but I don’t like it as one)- I think of [name_f]Lena[/name_f] from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, who was an interesting character
[name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] (for any [name_f]Lil[/name_f]- name)
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] (for [name_f]Lorena[/name_f], [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]/[name_f]Laura[/name_f], etc.)
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] (for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]) (though the Dutch [name_f]Lotte[/name_f]- something like “law-tuh” is nice on its own)
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (for any [name_m]Luc[/name_m]- name)
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] (for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f])
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] (for any name that starts with M and ends in or contains “ia”)
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] (for [name_f]Mildred[/name_f], [name_f]Milena[/name_f], even [name_f]Matilda[/name_f])
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] (for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f])
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] (for [name_f]Sarah[/name_f])
*That being said, I don’t like “nickname names” in general
