In search of the perfect "old lady" name...

I didn’t get much response on my thread on the [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names forum and I would really love to know what you think of the names on our list for a possible sister of Sab!na and [name_f]Pet[/name_f]*r’s… I think our style would fit in perfectly with the names [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] chose for her characters and as I’ve said before, that’s where we got our son’s name from. We really need help trimming down our list!

Our list:

  1. [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] (our current favorite, but that changes often)
  2. [name_f]Julia[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Thomasine[/name_f] or [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] (honor name that might go in the middle)
  4. [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] (also an honor name)
  5. [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] (husband is neutral)
  6. [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
  7. [name_f]Martha[/name_f]
  8. [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
  9. [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] (we both love this one and have officially added it to our list)

[name_f]Gloria[/name_f]
[name_f]Antonia[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]- I am hesitant on this one because I feel your daughter names might be too close
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorthy[/name_f]

I feel like those would fit perfect with your other children names

Aside from [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] I don’t really see the names on your list as “old lady” names. Especially with traditional [name_f]Pet[/name_f]*r and the more unique Sab!na. [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] and [name_f]Martha[/name_f] I find to be more similar to names like [name_f]Linda[/name_f], [name_f]Pam[/name_f], [name_f]Nancy[/name_f] and so on.

Again, I love [name_f]Adele[/name_f] and I think would tie in your other children’s names perfectly.

I think [name_f]Tomasine[/name_f] or [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] would go best with your other children’s names. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] list

I like [name_f]Thomasine[/name_f] or [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]…

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f], and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f].

I think all of your names are lovely! I’m also a fan of Beatrix Potter’s works.

  1. I don’t think Sabina and Tabitha are too close. In fact, I think they complement each other well. It’s so lovely to see Sabina getting used.
  2. Gloria is a hidden gem. I predict a comeback in 10-20 years!
  3. Check out the wonderful and always informative British Baby Names site with a page dedicated to Potter’s names: Names from the works of Beatrix Potter - British Baby Names
It mentions Jemima (Jemima Puddleduck) and Sally.
  4. Why not use Beatrix? It hits all of your marks.

Why not use [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]? It is perfect with your kids names.

I like [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] and [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]

Okay, I’ll start by saying that I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] honor name. I also like “old lady names”, but I like a little edge to them.

  1. [name_f]Gloria[/name_f]- I feel like there isn’t enough oomph to [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] for it to be in my favorite
  2. [name_f]Julia[/name_f]- I feel like it is not at special as some of the other ones
  3. [name_f]Thomasine[/name_f] or [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]- [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Thomasine[/name_f]! I never thought of that, but I think it is awesome
  4. [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]- I adore [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]. I think it is classic, but exotic and exciting at the same time
  5. [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]- I like it more than [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] or [name_f]Julia[/name_f], but not as much as the other ones
  6. [name_f]Adele[/name_f]- I think this is really pretty and cool. [name_f]Elle[/name_f] is a good nn too
  7. [name_f]Martha[/name_f]- meh
  8. [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]- I pretty much think [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] is the most perfect girl’s name.
  9. [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]- I’m not into it at all.

[name_f]Antonia[/name_f] [name_f]Thomasine[/name_f] (this one is my favorite because they are both honor names)
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f] [name_f]Thomasine[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f] [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]

[name_f]Sabina[/name_f], [name_m]Peter[/name_m], and…

[name_f]Gloria[/name_f] is my favorite by far. I really do like this with your other children’s names. It flows beautifully! [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is a bit more popular, and [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] is more uncommon, so I think [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] balances out her siblings’ names very well (familiar, but currently not overused). Best of luck!

My top 5:

  1. [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Martha[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Antonia[/name_f]
  4. [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
  5. [name_f]Julia[/name_f]

Thank you so far Berries! I think [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] is officially off our list, husband does not like it at all. We’ve also decided not to use two honor names for our baby, because we plan on having one more and because we really feel like being a bit selfish and choosing a first name that we truly and completely love… So that crosses [name_f]Antonia[/name_f] off as well, because we’re really attached to [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] as a middle name.
[name_f]Adele[/name_f] we’re not yet sure of and at least for now [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and [name_f]Martha[/name_f] are our prefered choices. That doesn’t mean, however, that we’re ready to let go of [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] and [name_f]Adele[/name_f].

Which do you think make the best combos with [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f]?
