Incorporating DD's Thoughts

It’s [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] here!

So far me and DH have decided on [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] LastName for our new addition. We, however, want to include some of the names our first daughter asked to use. Because she is a very calm, patient and polite girl (sometimes a bit too much), we obliged and she shared some of the names she wanted to name her younger sister. Most of the names come from what she has named her dolls, but I think that’s only because she likes the names.
Here is the list:

[name_f]Odetta[/name_f] - [name_f]Odetta[/name_f] is the name of one of [name_u]London[/name_u]'s (my daughter) friends, but [name_f]Odetta[/name_f] moved away about a year ago. Me and DH quite like the name and do not mind the link to another 3 year old. We figure that an [name_f]Odetta[/name_f] would have the nickname [name_f]Etta[/name_f], but [name_f]Odetta[/name_f] also sounds like OD (Over Dose, with drugs) to me, so that’s where I draw the line.

[name_f]Alana[/name_f] - Another name we quite like, almost as much as [name_f]Lola[/name_f].

[name_f]Calla[/name_f] - We all agree this is a nice middle name, however DH and I love the name [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] and may not want to leave it.

[name_f]Marietta[/name_f] - Nickname would be either [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f], whichever may be easier for [name_u]London[/name_u] and others to pronounce and remember.

So here’s the deal with this post:
Reply with your favourite combination and please explain why. We are also considering a second middle name in order to include our daughter’s name suggestions. However, [name_u]London[/name_u] does not have a second middle name and we do not know if this is an issue.

[name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]
[name_f]Alana[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]
[name_f]Marietta[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f]

If we decide to have a second middle name:

[name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]

EDIT: Some events have occurred that have resulted in the disbanding of the group. This account will no longer be in use. Daniella and Lucy have created a new accounts.

Here’s an idea for you, what about Loletta? You can spell it [name_f]Loleta[/name_f] too. That way you can call her [name_f]Lola[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f]! It’s a nice way to use the name you love and use part of two of Miss [name_u]London[/name_u]'s suggestions ([name_f]Odetta[/name_f] and [name_f]Marietta[/name_f]).
The style of her suggestions and of your favorite ([name_f]Lola[/name_f]) are so different, it might be easier to give a nod to her suggestions than to use a full name, for example: [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Mari[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]. It’s also difficult because [name_f]Lola[/name_f] ends in an A as do all of her suggestions, so they don’t have the greatest flow together. I do like your combination of [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] though. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about those ideas?

Thank you!
We adore Loletta, but we do still want to use [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a first name. We do think it is a very good idea though! We still have lots of time to think about it. Thank you for the suggestion!

First of all, let me say I’m very impressed by the list your daughter put together. What great names! I am really struck by [name_f]Odetta[/name_f], but I guess that one is no longer in the running?

From your list of combos, [name_f]Alana[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] is my favorite as a sister for [name_u]London[/name_u]–but I think you should use it only if you can shift from liking it “almost as much as [name_f]Lola[/name_f]” to actually liking it as much (or more!). I think it’s lovely to get your daughter’s suggestions and feedback, and if you as the parents fall in love with one of the names she suggested, then it would be wonderful to use it, but I don’t think you’re in any way obligated to do so. If you as the parents like [name_f]Lola[/name_f] better than the suggestions your daughter made, I think [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] would be just perfect. That way, you don’t have to give up your favorite name in the first spot, and one of your daughter’s picks still makes it into her sister’s name. I don’t see a problem with one daughter having two middle names and the other not–I can’t see the older sister being jealous since she got to choose one of the middles for her sister, and it would be a nice story behind why she has two middle names for your younger daughter one day.

All in all, lovely list of choices: well done [name_u]London[/name_u], and parents!

My favorite is [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] because I think [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is adorable and the combo flows nicely. I would like to point out that this would mean both of your daughters’ names would start with “Lo-”. They could be Lo & Lo if you like this idea, but something to consider anyways in case you don’t like the idea.

That in mind, my next favorite would be [name_f]Alana[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] because that seems the closest in style to [name_u]London[/name_u]. [name_f]Marietta[/name_f], [name_f]Odetta[/name_f] and [name_f]Calla[/name_f] seem to frilly and feminine next to the name [name_u]London[/name_u] , in my opinion.

Absolutely, 100%, [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f]. It’s beautiful, energetic, and romantic. I agree that you should go with two names as opposed to three - I would be confused and annoyed if I had a different number of names than my sister, whether it were more or less.

I have to ask: is [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] a family name for you? [name_m]Rudyard[/name_m] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] is known to be pretty controversial, and he’s all I can think of when I hear the name. I’d assume it was after him if I saw this.

[name_f]Marietta[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] because you seem to like [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] a lot, I like [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] most, and I think it is the most stylish of your contenders. [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] is familiar yet not currently common. I think the -etta ending is surprising but on trend and coming back in style. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is obviously always familiar but currently at its lowest point of use. All in all, it is a great combination of classic yet fresh. [name_f]Alana[/name_f] feels '80s to me and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] just makes me think of that “her name was [name_f]Lola[/name_f]…” song.

My two favourites are:
[name_f]Alana[/name_f] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f]
Good on you for considering your daughters favourite names!

^ This exactly. [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] is a gorgeous name. It incorporates her sister’s list without it being imbalanced: I just don’t think it’s fair to have one child with no middle name and one with two.

Also, you might want to read “The White [name_m]Man[/name_m]'s Burden” or any of [name_m]Rudyard[/name_m] [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]'s writings on race. He’s the only [name_m]Kipling[/name_m] anyone is going to think of, and I don’t think he makes for a very savory namesake.

This is a very good point about [name_m]Kipling[/name_m]. I assumed it was a family name. If that’s not the case, [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] would be my pick.

Thank you for such a great response! Me and DH have decided we do like [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] more. We forgot about this unsavoury namesake and now it’s all we think about as well when we say the name, and since we adore [name_f]Marietta[/name_f], we decided we’d use it, especially since it was our daughter’s suggestion.

What a perfect solution with [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Marietta[/name_f]! A lively, beautiful name chosen with love by the whole family.
