Indiana Jones?

For obvious reasons, this wouldn’t even be an issue if our sirname wasn’t [name]Jones[/name]

[name]Do[/name] you think a movie character should stop us from using our favourite name?

I don’t think so. I love [name]Indiana[/name] for a girl, and there are times where I would use it in a heartbeat. Other times, I feel more conservative however. The only time I would be worried about using a movie character’s name is when the association is bad. [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] is a college professor and an active archeologist; not bad associations in my book. However, with the last name Jones, it can be a little much.

[name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] is the coolest movie character ever! And [name]Indiana[/name] is a cutie name, although I prefer it on a boy.

It would be a no for me, sorry. [name]Even[/name] though it’s not a bad association, I wouldn’t like to have every other person come up to me and say, “Oh, like [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name]?” I think it’d drive me crazy! Sure, the movies are great, but I wouldn’t want people asking me that on a daily basis. Besides, what happens when she submits her resume for an application to a job she so wants to have, and the HR person looks at [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] and finds it a terrible joke? I just don’t think I could do it.

Would you consider something like [name]India[/name] [name]Jones[/name], or [name]Indigo[/name] [name]Jones[/name]? I think those would be much more usable.

Good luck!

I like [name]Indiana[/name] and I agree that [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] isn’t really a bad association, but I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t be annoying to carry a name that’s so closely tied to such a well-known figure in pop culture. I would definitely advise against [name]Indiana[/name] as a first name if your last name is [name]Jones[/name]. If you really love it would be okay in the middle spot, since I think risky or quirky names are fine in the middle. It would be a lot easier to reveal that your middle name is [name]Indiana[/name] than it would be to constantly have to introduce yourself as [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name].

I would not even consider using it…

I agree with the person above who says that as long as the association is a good one, it isn’t a problem. However, I’m wondering how seriously a woman will be taken in most job industries with the name [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name]. Can you imagine telling someone that your doctor or lawyer is named [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name]? Some people will think it is really interesting, others will think it is a joke, but no matter what the situation everyone will think of the character.

It is definitely something that I would need to think about a lot if it were me.

On a similar note, my last name is causing problems, too. I really like the name [name]Claribell[/name], but [name]Claribell[/name] [name]Bell[/name] is just weird. Sometimes we have to forfeit our faves.

[name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] isn’t a bad association, but this is like having the surname [name]Potter[/name] and naming your son [name]Harry[/name]. It just comes off as a joke.

Yes I have to admit it’s looking a little too risky, judging by the reaction so far!

I do like [name]India[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name] but aren’t they too close… The association is still there isn’t it? [name]May[/name] as well have had ‘the real thing’

I can’t imagine living with such a name. As an adult I would feel like my parents were playing with my future.
And it’s not like being named something rather regular that happens to have a famous connection, like [name]Milton[/name] [name]Bradley[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Benett[/name].
To me it’s no different than being named [name]Mickey[/name] Mouse or [name]Barack[/name] [name]Obama[/name].

[name]India[/name] is a little better, it still has a hint of it, but it’s not all the way there.
To me that’s the difference between a hippie naming their kid [name]Raina[/name] [name]Susanne[/name] and naming her Rainbough [name]Sunshine[/name].

I do think the association is still there, and I think people will notice the similarities in [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] and [name]India[/name] [name]Jones[/name], but I think if someone saw [name]India[/name] [name]Jones[/name] on a resume, they would take it seriously whereas they might not take an [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] seriously.

As much as I love the name, I feel it is 100% off limits. [name]Imagine[/name] how uncomfortable you would feel if that was your name, all the jokes etc? If it’s your favorite movie of all time, stick it in the middle to be funny, but it’s not fun as a FN unfortunately :frowning: I like the idea of [name]Indigo[/name] instead.

I agree with the people who suggested [name]Indigo[/name]. With the last name [name]Jones[/name], it really is too much.

Naming a kid [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] is a ridiculous idea. It’s like using [name]Sherlock[/name] [name]Holmes[/name], [name]John[/name] [name]Lennon[/name], [name]Walt[/name] Disney or the name of any famous person (fictional or not).

It’s also a very powerful trademark and a brand, so your kid could even face legal problems in the future, if he wants to use his name in a company, in publishment or a mere facebook account.

[name]Even[/name] [name]India[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name] would be pushing it to far. [name]Imagine[/name] being called [name]Madilyn[/name] [name]Monroe[/name] or [name]Harriet[/name] [name]Potter[/name].

My suggestions:
Girl: [name]Ingrid[/name] “[name]Indy[/name]”
Boy: [name]Dana[/name], [name]Montana[/name] or [name]Indy[/name] as short for an unrelated name. [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] was actually called [name]Henry[/name].

I don’t like it. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]India[/name] though

What a nuisance!
It’s actually my second choice. Looks like it will have to go in the bin with my first choice - Dagmara - which receives similar negative reactions :expressionless:

Um ya, sorry. I wouldn’t do it. It is still popular. I wouldn’t even do it for a boy but for a girl, never. If you last name wasn’t [name]Jones[/name] it would be fine but if it is I wouldn’t do that to your child!..

I wouldn’t even use [name]India[/name]; though [name]Indigo[/name] is better with the last name.

Please, do not make your daughter an example of what not to name a child. Honestly, if I saw a birth announcement for a girl named [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name], I’d think it was an urban legend or some kind of joke.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but personally, if my legal name were [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name], I would have it legally changed as soon as possible.

Oh, I just remembered this story and thought it might be relevant to this thread! A CNN article from a few years ago about people with joke-y, unusual names, including siblings named [name]Indiana[/name] and [name]Dow[/name] [name]Jones[/name].
