Kylian
Yes, this is completely, totally, and 100% sparked by the [name_m]French[/name_m] soccer player. What can I say? I’m a 19 year old girl and he’s spicy
It’s pronounced pretty similar to [name_m]Killian[/name_m] (sort of like KEEL-ee-an, although in [name_m]French[/name_m], the final N would be more implied than said. I wouldn’t try to get that from an American though). Here’s a link if you need a better explanation: How to pronounce Kylian in French - PronounceNames.com - YouTube. I like [name_m]Killian[/name_m] but I hesitate with the “kill” part, and I think Kylian puts less emphasis on it. It also doesn’t remind me of [name_f]Jillian[/name_f] as much, which I have a negative association to.
Wdyt? I know there will likely be mispronunciation issues in the States (I live in the Midwest) but is it usable? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you expect it to become more familiar in the U.S. or do you think that’s putting too much faith in the idea that the average American actually knows/cares about soccer? (I expect most people have heard of [name_m]Cristiano[/name_m] [name_m]Ronaldo[/name_m] and [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] Messi, although I’ve been devastatingly wrong about assumptions like that before. I care about sports much more than most of my friends, so I often think they know more than they do).
[name_m]Just[/name_m]… thoughts. Indulge me. Kylian. Go!
I really enjoy Kylian, it’s got the strength of [name_m]Killian[/name_m] without the violence, a little bit of trendiness with the [name_m]Ky[/name_m]. There will almost definitely be pronounciation issues, off the top of my head I would pronounce it 3 different ways: Kill-ee-an, [name_f]Ki/name_f-lee-an and Keel-ee-an, it won’t become popular, but well known wouldn’t be farfetched…although maybe not in [name_u]America[/name_u], certainly not here in Australia, we’re not very soccer oriented.
But I mean, if someone doesn’t know of [name_m]Ronaldo[/name_m] or Messi…they probably live under a soundproof rock my 3 year olf second cousin knows of them.
Fellow football (or for some of you soccer) fan here, I also fell in love with Kylian during this world cup!
I think that as an American you’d be better off with the [name_m]Killian[/name_m] spelling, mostly because Kylian would probably get misspelled. Though I’m a bit on the fence with this one, the football association and the fact that for you it gets rid of the [name_f]Jillian[/name_f] association makes it worth it!
I think it might get more attention, but not that much. My relatives who live in the US know nothing about football despite growing up in Europe.
Overall, a very handsome name that I’d love to see being used more!
Thanks guys!
@[name_f]Kizzy[/name_f], I doubt it’ll get popular here in the States. It might crack the top 1000 but I think that’s a long shot. I adore the nickname [name_m]Ky[/name_m]/[name_u]Kai[/name_u] but I bet that’ll just confuse everyone with the pronunciation lol.
And, with the [name_m]Ronaldo[/name_m] and Messi thing, you’d be surprised how little people can pay attention. All my friends know who [name_m]Ronaldo[/name_m] is (because I dislike him and complain about him every so often) but I’m not so sure about Messi.
@emmievis, the football association is definitely a plus. I’ve been looking for names to honor my dad, and my favorite idea is looking for a soccer name since we both love soccer, so this would be perfect.
Once you explained the pronunciation I really liked it. I also like [name_m]Killian[/name_m] but would never personally use it because of the first syllable being kill. So I find this name even more handsome. However, when all I saw was the name, I thought it was a kr8ive spelling of [name_m]Killian[/name_m]. So if people assuming that would bug you, I’d say, not usable. If you’re fine with constantly educating people about the name, usable.
I see it being mispronounced as kye-lee-in. I don’t see it getting popular, but [name_u]Kyrie[/name_u] has had a huge rise in popularity do to the basketball player so who’s to say.
@llbaby22, I feel the same way about [name_m]Killian[/name_m]! I won’t be having kids for at least another 5 years, and Kylian Mbappe is 19, so it’s likely he’ll still be playing, I just don’t know if he’ll be any more relevant.
@autumnreverie, I don’t see it getting popular either. Like I said, it might crack the top 1000 but I doubt it.
Thanks guys!
I know nothing of football, forgive me. BUT I do adore a [name_m]Cillian[/name_m]! [name_m]Cillian[/name_m] [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] (from Peaky Blinders) to be exact. I’m not a big fan of the name, but it has a notable dedication so I wouldn’t mind looking the other way

I am an American living in Europe and I can tell you, a majority of Americans [name_f]DO[/name_f] NOT know who [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] Messi or [name_m]Cristiano[/name_m] [name_m]Ronaldo[/name_m] are. They are certainly not going to know who Kyrian Mbappé is unless he someday plays a match against the American team.
Having said that, I belong to the school of “Who cares if it’s weird?” What I mean by that is, my name is [name_f]Kristy[/name_f] and I think the name itself is pretty familiar, but I have spent nearly 40 years now correcting the spelling and telling people to stop calling me [name_f]Christine[/name_f], because my name is [name_f]Kristy[/name_f]. This has led me to believe that it nearly doesn’t matter what you name your child. SOME fool will find a way to screw it up, so go with what you love and if little Kyrian has to explain that the first syllable rhymes with “see” not “try” then so be it.
@thatnamecrazy, I don’t know who that is, and I’ve never heard of Peaky Blinders either. I like [name_m]Cillian[/name_m] more than [name_m]Killian[/name_m] but Kylian more than both.
@marcardk, thanks!
