Initials FML?

My husband and I are expecting our second baby. We don’t know yet if it’s a boy or a girl.
His favorite girl name is [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. It’s a close second for me, but I have a few things holding me back.
I have red hair and there is always the chance one of our children could as well. I don’t know if I could doom my poor daughter to all the Shrek references if she turned out the be a redhead AND named [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].
Also, I want to use my mother’s middle name for our first daughter, which is [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. Our last name starts with L which would leave her with the initials FML.
And if that wasn’t enough, I hate the nickname [name_f]FiFi[/name_f] and I know a few people who would call her that just to be annoying. (I would probably call her Finny.)
We both really love the name, but do you think there is too much risk involved with it? Haha
His mother’s middle name is [name_u]Kay[/name_u], which we could use, but it’s not my favorite.
I’m leaning toward [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]. It seems a lot safer and my personal favorite anyway. What do you think?

Personally, I would avoid the initials FML. I really like both [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_u]Eden[/name_u]. [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is beautiful and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_u]Kay[/name_u] flows well. You could always use a name similar to [name_u]Kay[/name_u] to honor your [name_f]MIL[/name_f]. The Shrek/redhead connection wouldn’t be as much of a concern to me, but people with school age children might know best!

I think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is a truly stunning name! I also think that by the time your [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] would be school age (8 or so years from now), most people won’t make the Shrek connection.

That being said, I do this it sounds like you have lots of reasons that the name doesn’t work for you, and so I don’t think it’ll be your best bet. You might as well go with something you love and have less qualms about. [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is just as lovely and doesn’t seem to pose the same issues! Go for it.

I’d avoid FML. I recommend going with something more original than [name_f]Marie[/name_f] that starts with a different letter (though I understand it is important to you). Would your mom’s first name work?

I think I would stay away from FML. I think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is beautiful and I don’t think it will be too associated with Shrek. If I knew someone named [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], I don’t think [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] would be a nickname that would pop in my head. I think [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and [name_u]Kay[/name_u] are common middle names, maybe your mom or mother-in-law’s first names would be a better fit? Or a grandmother’s name? Also, you don’t have to use names in your family. I think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_u]Eden[/name_u] sounds nice.

Definitely stay away from FML as initials. Initials that spell things are tricky but if those initials contained a curse word, they’d be completely off the table for me.

As far as the redhead thing, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. She may be born bald and then end up with red hair, it’s really a toss-up.

I personally love [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] as a nickname (says the lady named [name_f]Cece[/name_f] with a daughter called [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]). But if it bothers you, just correct people and they’ll get it. I do really like Finny/[name_u]Finn[/name_u] as a nickname.

A pp mentioned [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_u]Eden[/name_u] which I was thinking as well. Gorgeous combo! [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is beautiful as well. Good luck!

Hmm I was going to say it would be fine with me, as I’ve never said FML in my life. But I guess it’s pretty popular with people younger than me. My own son’s initials are OMG but I guess that’s different since there’s no curse word. I def wouldn’t worry about the Shrek thing or the [name_f]FiFi[/name_f] thing.

Idk, I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_u]Kay[/name_u] more than [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] personally. But it sounds like both [name_u]Eden[/name_u] and [name_f]Marie[/name_f] are your first choices, so go with that.

Tough call with great options. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and [name_u]Eden[/name_u] are both lovely.

If you run with [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] I’m inclined to suggest you use [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]-[name_u]Kay[/name_u] to avoid the FML initials. [name_f]Marie[/name_f]-[name_u]Kay[/name_u] is short and sweet enough to hyphenate easily and yes, it is close to [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Kay[/name_u], but that shouldn’t be a deal-breaker in the middle name slot.

Of course if you use [name_u]Eden[/name_u] the whole issue is moot. You could even do [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]-[name_u]Kay[/name_u] if you feel you need to honor both your mother and [name_f]MIL[/name_f].

Whichever you chose I think you’ll be fine, but do go with your gut. I think you’ll be less likely to regret your choice.

Using a family name is important us. If it is a boy he will likely be [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] [name_m]Steven[/name_m] after my father. Our son is named after my FIL. Neither of our mother’s first names are ones we are interested in using. They kinda make my face wrinkle up thinking about naming my baby either of those names. They aren’t bad names, one is over used and the other is simply not a name I like for my own kids at all. So even though their middle names are common, it’s what we’ve got. Haha. I’ve always loved my mom’s middle name anyway and knew I would use it for my daughter one day.
My husband is pretty stuck on [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] so far. So if he won’t budge maybe we’ll go with [name_u]Kay[/name_u] as a middle name. I’m only 12 weeks, so we have time. I just like to have my babies named ASAP.
Also, we plan on having more children so I’m sure I’ll get my [name_f]Marie[/name_f] sometime, if not this time.

[name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] works.

I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], but [name_u]Eden[/name_u] is gorgeous too. I would definitely stay away from the initials FML though.

I guess I’m behind the times. What is wrong with FML?

I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and far prefer it to [name_u]Eden[/name_u].

Boyandgirl, It’s is very popular social media/digital abbreviation (like OMG) meaning “F— My Life”.

[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is stunning! Personally the FML initials don’t bother me but I can understand why you’d be bothered by them. Maybe a different middle or a double middle name to avoid the problem? [name_u]Eden[/name_u] is pretty but [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is much more appealing to me personally.
I don’t see the red head issue being a problem, most people will likely not think of it and I don’t think it’s a huge deal if they do, [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] and Shrek were great! So unless she’s also born with green skin I wouldn’t fret
While I do strongly prefer [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], both names are lovely so you really can’t go wrong!

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. I don’t think initials should define your child’s first name. If anything, they should affect the middle name. [name_f]Remember[/name_f], 95% of the people she meets in her life won’t even know her middle name. My only problem with [name_u]Eden[/name_u] is that it’s very religiously charged, which may be something she resents later. But if it’s your favorite name you should use it.

[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is breathtakingly beautiful and (in my opinion) extremely underused. The Shrek connection probably won’t matter when she gets to school age. There are so many films with other character names that it’s pretty inconsequential, and she’s an awesome character to be associated with anyway, when you think about it. I strongly prefer [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], but at the end of the day you should choose with your heart!

Thank you everyone! About 6 weeks before we can find out the sex of the baby, so I guess we have lots to discuss. I appreciate you insight.

I looove the name [name_u]Eden[/name_u], it’s in my top two! [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is very sweet, though. You could avoid the nn [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] pretty easily I think by calling her [name_f]Fina[/name_f] or Finny. I wouldn’t worry too much about the Shrek references, as she might not even have red hair! Shrek is becoming less popular, anyways, and there’s a chance that children her age won’t have even seen Shrek. The thing that gives me the most pause is the initials, although it’s not often that she’d need to use all three, anyways (mostly it’d just be FL).

If you want to be safe, I’d do [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_u]Kay[/name_u] or [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f], but I don’t think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] would be the end of the world. Or, you could give her two middle names ([name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]) and avoid the whole initial thing.

Good luck!

I prefer [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] to [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f], but both are beautiful.

To get around the FML issue, you could do something like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f]? However, I really don’t think the FML thing is that big of a deal - I feel like the FN-LN initial is used nine times out of ten before all three initials are used, and her monogram would be FLM, so I’m not sure how often the FML would really show up.
