Initials MAD?

Not pregnant, not ttc, but baby-name thoughts keep popping into my head! I’m smitten with the idea of [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name], nickname [name]Maggie[/name]. The only problem is that our surname starts with a D. Is that enough to take the name off my girls’ name list?

Yes, I definately think so. Would you consider a first name that has the nn [name]Maggie[/name] like [name]Margaret[/name] or [name]Magnolia[/name]?

Darn. My great-grandmother’s name was [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] and that’s where the inspiration was coming from. I’ve loved [name]Agnes[/name] forever but hate the nn [name]Aggie[/name]. This felt like a great alternative except for the initials. Thanks!

Undecided. Normally I’d say drop it for negative initials, but I actually know a male MAD and MAD [name]Jr[/name].!
Sure people have noticed and family has joked about it, but it hasn’t been a big deal. Dad is successful and happy, and clearly happy enough with his name to use it for his own son.

I’d rather be MAD than SAD or DAD…(sorry, that was BAD)

I don’t think you should worry. If it bothers you that much, add another middle IE: [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] wynn - then you would have MAWD. FYI I much prefer [name]Merry[/name] to mary, I think it would make the Heavy name of [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] (which seems nun-like) a bit lighter?

Thank you for the feedback! Last initial D is very difficult to work with! I think we should stay away from any A- names in the middle. _[name]AD[/name] spells so many words and they almost all have negative meanings: BAD, CAD, DAD, FAD, [name]GAD[/name], HAD, [name]LAD[/name], MAD, PAD, [name]RAD[/name], SAD, WAD.

I like the suggestion of two middle names to help eliminate initial issues. We will use two middles for all of our children. Our last name is only one syllable though, so it is short and allows for it.

I also know a MAD and his son MAD [name]Jr[/name]. It’s a bit of a small joke in the family, but neither mind it at all.

Would you consider two middle names? Ex. [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Jane[/name] D___. Then her Initialis would be MAJD  Or [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] D___, MALD. You get the picture!

Also [name]Margaret[/name] could be a way to honor [name]Mary[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name], and nn would still be [name]Maggie[/name]. Good luck!

My cousin has the initials MAD and it’s not an issue at all. I would not rule out your MA combinations, Now, if the initials were say, STD, I’d definitely reconsider.

I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, I wouldn’t drop it, I mean people rarely know others middle names, and MAD really isnt that bad I mean names like [name]Maddie[/name] are popular these days and that begins with Mad!

I really don’t think you should worry about it!

I honestly don’t think the initials MAD will pose much of a problem. If you love the name, then you should totally use it.

Sorry, but I would take it off the list…

I wouldn’t take it off the list personally. TBH I think it’s dumb to worry TOO much about initials. Like someone said, if it’s something like STD or PMS that would draw constant teasing, I’d consider cutting it. I have a few interesting initials in my family - MAP, RAP, [name]CAP[/name], BMW to name a few. And my initials are JAP (for another 8 months…). So… it could be worse!

[name]Don[/name]'t drop [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] just because of the initials. It’s really not so bad. Like others have said, if it was something like STD, PMS, or ASS, then it would be best to take the names off your list. But MAD isn’t that bad. I think [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] is very pretty, though [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Mary[/name] would be nice too (she wouldn’t be destined to be an [name]Aggie[/name].) [name]Don[/name]'t drop it!

First, just let me say that [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] nn [name]Maggie[/name] is just GORGEOUS! I love it!

Personally, I wouldn’t be bothered by the MAD initials. Growing up, saying something was ‘mad’ was a good thing… a while ago I know, but still!! And like a previous poster said, most of the time her initials will be just MD. Like a doctor. Which is a great omen!

Not sure if someone else has mentioned this and I missed it, but would it be possible for you to do [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Mary[/name] instead, if you want to honour your relative? I know not everyone is mad about [name]Agnes[/name] (aha! No pun intended, but see? It still means a good thing!), but I personally love it.

I don’t think initials MAD are an issue when you’ve got a million tiny girls named [name]Madelyn[/name]/[name]Madeleine[/name]/[name]Madeline[/name] and [name]Madison[/name] all running around named [name]Maddy[/name]. It doesn’t have much negative connotation left.

Surnames ruin some perfectly great names sometimes…!
Darn them! My fav is [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Rose[/name]- but LN is a Y Intitals CRY!
CRY? MAD? other negative initial combos? Sadly, no go. Sorry.

I would not worry about it either! Agree with @jojocastles, there are so many Mad- names and it doesn’t seem to be an issue. I also like the suggestion of the double mn. [name]Love[/name] [name]Mary[/name] [name]Agnes[/name].

My initials are MAD and it has never been a issue, in fact I always kind of liked that it spelled something (my great grandma told me it was good luck). In general it rarely comes up, and at the most when it has it gets a smile/small acknowledgement like “cool”. Also ladies are generally less likely to get their initials monogrammed on to towels or jewelry so it would be even less of an issue.
