Input on This Boy Name

So, here’s the deal: we’re not pregnant but hope to have children semi-soon.

[name_f]My[/name_f] preferences: I love ethereal, rare(ish) names (not within the top 100, preferably 500 but I have a few exceptions) with solid meanings that embody what I hope for who my children become as they grow up.

Husband’s: He’s more down-to-earth (isn’t that always the way it is?) and loves history and more common-ish names (although he doesn’t want the top 10).

I’ve been loving [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] for a boy recently. It ticks a lot of boxes: strong, historical, rare enough that I’m okay with it and paired with the middle I have picked out it evokes the right kind of meaning.

Problem: I detest both “Auggie” and “Gus” as nicknames and have since I was a child (I was a weird kid, am I right?).

Input Needed: So if I got ahead of the tide and called him “Aug” or “August” from the beginning, do you Berries think he’d still get called the others? I dislike them enough to probably not use [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] if he’d get called those nicknames.

Looking for general impressions, experiences with the name [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and/or nicknames [name_u]Gus[/name_u] and [name_m]Auggie[/name_m], etc and any other pertinent thoughts!

Thanks! Sorry if this post is long

You could probably stop random people for using them if you gave them a different nickname to use but there’s no stopping him from choosing it himself when he gets older.

If you introduce him as [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] or [name_u]August[/name_u], I think that is what people will call him! Aug is more likely to become [name_m]Auggie[/name_m].

Auggie has never felt like a super natural nickname for me, maybe Gus feels a but more intuitive here, but I wouldn’t immediately shorten it, unless he did himself. I know of an Augustine who is exclusively Augustine so…I guess it could work. I’d say go with August over Aug, as once you start saying Aug, someone will say Auggie I’m sure.

That said, as I’m sure you’ve seen/heard a number of times on here, you can’t really control what others will call him or what he wants to be called himself. He might like Gus or Auggie; people at school might use them and he might like them for at school? And, even if it seems impossible now, they might grow on you, were you to associate them with your son (something similar happened to my aunt. She maintained and tried to enforce her hatred of a nn for my cousin, but now has ended up using it :person_shrugging: )

Augustus is a gorgeous name though
