Interesting popular names in Denmark 2014

I was looking through the naming statistic from the first six months of 2014 in Denmark, and though we have some trends similar to the US ([name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_m]William[/name_m] are ranking #1), we also have some high-ranking names that are far less popular in the states.

For the girls:
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] (ranking #2)
[name_f]Freja[/name_f] (#5)
[name_f]Karla[/name_f] (#7)
[name_f]Alma[/name_f] (#12)
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] (#19)
[name_f]Frida[/name_f] (#27)
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f] (#29)
[name_f]Asta[/name_f] (#34)
[name_f]Filippa[/name_f] (#36)
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] (#37)

[name_u]August[/name_u] (#21)
[name_m]Marius[/name_m] (#28)

… So, opinions? [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to point out favorites or names you dislike

For the girls, I like:

[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Freja[/name_f]
[name_f]Alma[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]

[name_f]Alba[/name_f]
[name_f]Celina[/name_f]
[name_f]Liv[/name_f]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]

Dislike…

[name_f]Karla[/name_f]
[name_f]Nanna[/name_f] - another name for Grandmother for English speakers
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Asta[/name_f]
[name_f]Malou[/name_f] - cartoonish like Caillou
[name_f]Aya[/name_f]

For the boys, I like:

[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Marius[/name_m]
[name_m]Johan[/name_m]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]

[name_m]Thor[/name_m]
[name_m]Jonas[/name_m]

Dislike…

[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Carl[/name_m]
[name_u]Sander[/name_u] - I know it’s a variant of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] but to English speakers it sounds like someone who sands paper.
[name_u]Storm[/name_u] - warning: trouble ahead. Advice to parents: be careful of self-fulfilling names like this one.

Interesting… my top 5’s are

[name_f]Alma[/name_f] (#12)
[name_f]Liv[/name_f] (#43)
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] (#48)
[name_f]Freja[/name_f] (#5)

[name_u]August[/name_u] (#21)
[name_m]Marius[/name_m] (#28)
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] (#43)
[name_m]Johan[/name_m] (#29)
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] (#11)

Interesting, thanks for sharing! I like so many of the names. Highlights for me were:

[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Freja[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Asta[/name_f]
[name_f]Alba[/name_f]
[name_f]Aya[/name_f]

[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Johan[/name_m]
[name_u]Storm[/name_u]
[name_u]Sander[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Jonas[/name_m]

My favourites:

[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Freja[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Liv[/name_f]

[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]

I really dislike [name_u]Sander[/name_u], [name_u]Storm[/name_u] and [name_f]Asta[/name_f], but [name_f]Aya[/name_f] is quite intriguing.

[name_m]Even[/name_m] as someone living in Denmark, some of these names surprised me. I’ve never met anyone met [name_f]Aya[/name_f] myself, and I’ve only heard of one Danish “celebrity” name his son [name_u]Storm[/name_u], and I really didn’t think it would make it into the 30’s, that’s kind of crazy.

I’m glad you guys liked some of the names, I thought some of them were quite “berry”.

What’s the most significant to me is how international (meaning quite easy to pronounce in English) the top names have become. When I look at my generation from a couple of decades ago, around half of the names are almost impossible to pronounce correctly in English, especially the girl names. Now, around 80%-90% of the most popular names work at least in both Danish and English.

Wow I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]. [name_u]Storm[/name_u] is also pretty awesome.
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Freja[/name_f] are quite stunning choices.

You [name_u]Dane[/name_u]'s have great taste!

Whoa! Definitely some interesting ones there. I’m surprised by [name_u]Storm[/name_u] and [name_m]Thor[/name_m]! I actually know a baby [name_u]Storm[/name_u] (here in the U.S.). Most of my family was shocked when my relative used the name - I had no idea it was so popular elsewhere.

These are my favorites…

Girls:
[name_f]Karla[/name_f] (#7)
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f] (#29)
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] (#37)
[name_f]Alba[/name_f] (#38)
[name_f]Celina[/name_f] (#40)
[name_f]Aya[/name_f] (#50)

Boys:
[name_u]August[/name_u] (#21)
[name_m]Marius[/name_m] (#28)
[name_m]Johan[/name_m] (#29)
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] (#31)
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] (#40) - though I dislike the nn [name_u]Phil[/name_u], yuck
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] (#43)
[name_m]Jonas[/name_m] (#47)

Thanks for sharing!
