I was looking through the naming statistic from the first six months of 2014 in Denmark, and though we have some trends similar to the US ([name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_m]William[/name_m] are ranking #1), we also have some high-ranking names that are far less popular in the states.
For the boys:
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] (#11)
[name_m]Carl[/name_m] (#18)
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] (#20)
[name_u]August[/name_u] (#21)
[name_m]Marius[/name_m] (#28)
[name_m]Johan[/name_m] (#29)
[name_u]Storm[/name_u] - yes, this is also the Danish word for a storm (#30)
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] (#31)
[name_u]Sander[/name_u] (#38)
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] (#40)
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] (#43)
[name_m]Jonas[/name_m] (#47)
[name_m]Thor[/name_m] (#50)
… So, opinions? [name_m]Feel[/name_m] free to point out favorites or names you dislike
[name_f]Karla[/name_f]
[name_f]Nanna[/name_f] - another name for Grandmother for English speakers
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Asta[/name_f]
[name_f]Malou[/name_f] - cartoonish like Caillou
[name_f]Aya[/name_f]
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m]
[name_m]Carl[/name_m]
[name_u]Sander[/name_u] - I know it’s a variant of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] but to English speakers it sounds like someone who sands paper.
[name_u]Storm[/name_u] - warning: trouble ahead. Advice to parents: be careful of self-fulfilling names like this one.
[name_m]Even[/name_m] as someone living in Denmark, some of these names surprised me. I’ve never met anyone met [name_f]Aya[/name_f] myself, and I’ve only heard of one Danish “celebrity” name his son [name_u]Storm[/name_u], and I really didn’t think it would make it into the 30’s, that’s kind of crazy.
I’m glad you guys liked some of the names, I thought some of them were quite “berry”.
What’s the most significant to me is how international (meaning quite easy to pronounce in English) the top names have become. When I look at my generation from a couple of decades ago, around half of the names are almost impossible to pronounce correctly in English, especially the girl names. Now, around 80%-90% of the most popular names work at least in both Danish and English.
Wow I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Magnus[/name_m]. [name_u]Storm[/name_u] is also pretty awesome.
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] and [name_f]Freja[/name_f] are quite stunning choices.
Whoa! Definitely some interesting ones there. I’m surprised by [name_u]Storm[/name_u] and [name_m]Thor[/name_m]! I actually know a baby [name_u]Storm[/name_u] (here in the U.S.). Most of my family was shocked when my relative used the name - I had no idea it was so popular elsewhere.
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Alma[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Frida[/name_f]
[name_f]Asta[/name_f]
[name_f]Filippa[/name_f] (prefer this to the English spelling)
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Malou[/name_f]
