Hello everyone. I’m sure this thread will elicit many laughs, but if anything we can all get a good chuckle out of it.
[name_f]My[/name_f] question is- are name combinations, if well combined, still totally out of the question?
Here are some examples of what I’ve come up with:
Alastariel- [name_m]Alastar[/name_m] is Welsh for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] meaning “defending men” and Rielle meaning “god is my strength”. This name combinaiton sounds very feminine even though it is arguably male.
Gaialea- (guy-ah-lay-ah) [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] is mother earth. [name_f]Lea[/name_f] means bearer of good news.
Etc.
There are others but I’m wondering if this is just too silly to continue.
I think names like that definitely work in fantasy novels! Not so much on actual children. I can’t imagine it being a good idea [name_m]IRL[/name_m], anyway.
I personally like unique names that are packed with meaning. I was dying to use Macaaron for the longest time, because it means son of [name_m]Aaron[/name_m]. Everyone said that looked like Macaroon - which did bother me. It was the hate I received from everyone that made me decide against trying to incorporate it into my possible future son’s name though. When you use names like that people are bound to pronounce it incorrectly, spell it incorrectly, or give your child a hard time in school. [name_f]My[/name_f] goddaughter’s name is [name_u]Bryley[/name_u]. Her name wasn’t the norm when she was born 10 years ago - her mom smashed her two favorite names ([name_u]Riley[/name_u] and [name_f]Briana[/name_f]). [name_u]Bryley[/name_u] gets annoyed that people spell it wrong, but she loves that no one has her name… Well no one around her age. I haven’t really given an exact opinion, but I think that is because that I think it depends on the name, the area where the child will grow up, and whether or not you can handle people turning their nose up at your name choice.
i.e. I butchered the way you want Gaialea to be pronounced… The way I read it was a jumbled mess of vowels. I think it looks pretty and very unique, but I think it isn’t going to be a name that people will spell and say correctly on their first try. But, I do think that Alastariel is a cool name and I like the meaning.
Sorry to make such a long post, but I wanted to be as much help as possible!
I think smooshed names are a special category of invented names. While I dislike invented names in general, I don’t mind a good part of smooshed names and even like some ([name_f]Milou[/name_f] and [name_f]Luella[/name_f], for example).
Alastariel reminds me of [name_m]Alastair[/name_m] and sounds like a boy name to me. It’s okay. Gaialea is lovely, but I prefer just [name_f]Gaia[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Luella[/name_f], that’s a winner. I think some are very intuitive, such as this one, and then give them established use – it goes a long way. Over all, if it sounds good and not contrived, then I think it’s a great way to create a name without going totally to the moon.
I really love the Spanish pronunciation of [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], which as a name there is spelled the same, but pronounced Isabeya. I wonder if that name with that spelling would hold on its own or if it’d be better to go with traditional spelling and correcting people. I think sometimes messing with the spelling works, other times not, and this can more or less create a new name too.
I have tried this in my mind and on paper, and it normally results in me making faces after I say them out loud. I will try some here:
[name_u]Alexis[/name_u] plus [name_f]Camille[/name_f] could be Malexa…sounds like an antacid or something
or Calexa, which sounds like Celexa, which is an antidepressant with less than desirable side effects hehe
or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] plus [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] equals Avisha…sort of sounds like an Akita, or some other breed of dog
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] plus [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]…Dephaya…a girl who is defiant?
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] plus [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], and maybe a pinch of [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] might give me :
Breakdown of name equation: [name_f]Wendy[/name_f] plus [name_f]Chelle[/name_f] plus [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] equals
Welle plus rosemary equals this isn’t working very Welle.
Why not just go for [name_f]Galilea[/name_f] instead of Gaialea.
And instead of Alastariel… [name_m]Alas[/name_m] [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], [name_m]Alastair[/name_m] [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] and for a girl [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] or [name_f]Alista[/name_f] [name_u]Ariel[/name_u].
I actually quite like some combined/ made up names. I think Gaialea’s okay although when I first saw it I thought it was pronounced [name_u]Gale[/name_u]-ee-a, which I really like. I think Alastariel looks better with just two a’s Alastriel, I like it, it reminds me of stars. They would really suit characters in a novel though, but I think some people have worse names in real life, and they’d actually be okay on the right person.
idk I knew someone when I was younger named [name_f]Charlynn[/name_f] which was a combo name. One of her parents wanted to name her [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and the other [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] so they put them together. Names like that don’t really bother me but I think there is a limit to how inventive you can be without being too out there.
Thank you all for your feedback ! I feel more confident using a lyrical combination, as long as it is no longer than four syllables.
Myosotis- [name_u]Gale[/name_u] ee a is very pretty ! As is Alastriel ! I might steal that one
I guess what I’m looking for is a longer version of [name_f]Gaia[/name_f]…
So far my best combination is Gaialea, which is only slightly different from [name_f]Galilea[/name_f].
I’ve also got Gaialowen ([name_f]Gaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]), Gaiavella ([name_f]Gaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Vella[/name_f]- this one means beautiful earth :)), Gaianova ([name_f]Gaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Nova[/name_f])… I want to make sure the [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] part of the name stays intact.
Haha well I like the meanings together…and the general idea of made up names, but how about Alarielle? Woah no lol that looks way too feminine. What about Alastriel? That’s a little more masculine…reminds me of Galadriel off LOTR lol I actually like it!
As for Gaialea…I don’t know it seems like names are just being thrown together [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. Gailea?
I guess merging the names is not what you meant…you mean putting two whole names together right? Like with [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lea[/name_f]…I like the idea of merging names but having two names beside eachother as one and double barrel names I don’t like much at all.
Good luck, and list some more examples please I’d love to see what else you’ve come up with…these names could be the start of something beautiful
[name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: lol I see someone else has beat me to it and suggested Alastriel. Guess we both have good taste in names
While I appreciate the creative flair that some people have for inventing new names, I find more people “think” they’re more brilliant than they are :). Personally, I have a strong preference for names that have history and depth. Most invented names are often difficult to pronounce and spell so that’s a big turnoff for me. Some modern inventions even look like parents just threw letters up in the air and wherever they landed, that’s the name. What’s the point of making up a name yourself when there is an infinite number of names which are legitimate and underused just waiting to be discovered? Sometimes I think parents take their quest for “uniqueness” a bit too far and burden the child with a lifetime of misspellings and mispronunciations.
Like @[name_u]Mischa[/name_u], I prefer names that have history. But I don’t mind invented names, as long as they aren’t too crazy. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite invented name is [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]. I just love it. It isn’t one of those Jaylynns or Jaxxxons that are just crazy looking, its more of a smoosh name than a unique, look how different name. I have a few names that I have created because I liked the sound, for ex Cassara or Rinona, but those would only be for characters.
I just think people try too hard to be creative and it just looks crazy in the end. [name_f]Jaclyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Jaylynn[/name_f] and Jaxie, [name_u]Jaiden[/name_u] [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] Jayyden. Enough already.
