Iris Marcheline, William Klaus, Viola Blair and... ?

[name]Hi[/name] there!
[name]Just[/name] found out I’m expecting twins - bit stunned, but now it’s beginning to sink in and we’re looking forward to launching into the naming process once more! Huzzah!

We’re looking for names that “match” with out three other children - [name]Iris[/name] [name]Marcheline[/name], [name]William[/name] [name]Klaus[/name] and [name]Viola[/name] [name]Blair[/name]. Not really sure how to describe our naming style… vintage, literary!? People seem to throw those words about a great deal on here, at least! All put me in mind of crisp winter mornings, somehow, but I’m not sure if that’s an opinion other people share

We live in [name]England[/name] and our last name’s three syllables long. Not sure of the twins’ gender yet!

Okay, so far the list goes:

As you may be able to see, we’re in need of serious help, especially on the boys’ side! Please give us some feedback, suggest us some more names, add some middles (I’ve got [name]Rosie[/name] [name]Firth[/name] in my head for some reason?) or make some combinations! Work your magic, berries!

I adore your kids’ names!

From your list I like:
[name]Hermione[/name] (I adore it!)
[name]Sadie[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Arminta[/name] (if you mean [name]Araminta[/name], then I like it a lot :))
I prefer [name]Meg[/name] as a nickname for [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Effie[/name] for [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Norah[/name] for [name]Eleanor/name, [name]Bridie[/name] for [name]Bridget[/name] & [name]Prue[/name] for [name]Prudence[/name] (& I also think the original form would compliment the sophisticated [name]Iris[/name], [name]William[/name] & [name]Viola[/name] more than a nickname).

I love [name]Oscar[/name] & [name]Nathaniel[/name], but I think [name]Percival[/name] is perhaps a bit stodgy & [name]Pip[/name] is a bit too nickname-y. What about [name]Peregrine[/name], nicknamed [name]Pip[/name]?

Other suggestions:

[name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Poppy[/name], [name]Pippa[/name], [name]Nell[/name], [name]Lola[/name]
[name]Philippa[/name] nn [name]Pippa[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name] nn [name]Sunny[/name]

[name]Lionel[/name] nn [name]Lyle[/name], [name]Leo[/name]

Good luck!

[name]Hi[/name] and welcome. I suppose because you have a three syllable name that long names like [name]Hermione[/name] and [name]Nathaniel[/name] are really out? I will work on this premise. Here is a short list just for starters

[name]Iris[/name], [name]Viola[/name], [name]William[/name] and

[name]Rose[/name] [name]Helena[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name] [name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Tessa[/name] [name]Marianne[/name]
[name]Prue[/name] [name]Elise[/name]
[name]Helena[/name] [name]Marianne[/name]
[name]Sarah[/name] [name]Bridget[/name] nn [name]Sally[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name] [name]Prudence[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name] [name]Ruth[/name] nn [name]Meg[/name]

[name]Oscar[/name] [name]Thorne[/name]
[name]George[/name] [name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name] [name]Phillip[/name]
[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Leo[/name]
[name]Lucas[/name] [name]Conrad[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name] [name]Conrad[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Raymond[/name]
[name]Toby[/name] [name]Douglas[/name]

rollo

[name]Hi[/name] araminta - thank you so much for the wonderful suggestions! I’m making a list to run through with the fam!
I see your point - I hadn’t realised we’d listed so many nickname-names! For some reason short forms always hold so much more appeal  [name]Love[/name] your suggestion of [name]Eleanora[/name] though, and will always secretly adore [name]Prudence[/name] and [name]Prunella[/name]. Lamentably, I don’t think anyone would actually allow me name a child these. Sad face.
You’re right about [name]Percival[/name]. Not sure what was going on there.

Okay, so the list as stands:

[name]Araminta[/name]/[name]Arminta[/name] (is [name]Araminta[/name] too long compared to the others?)
[name]Hermione[/name] (unsure, too HP?)
[name]Prue[/name] (can’t quite let go yet)
[name]Eleanora[/name] (liking this more and more)
[name]Saskia[/name] (and this)
[name]Susannah[/name] ([name]Sunny[/name], n’aw!)

[name]Phillip[/name] nn [name]Pip[/name]?
[name]Archer[/name] nn [name]Archie[/name]

I also really like [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Pippa[/name], but I think combined with [name]William[/name] I could come across as some kind of mad royalist??

Keep 'em coming!

[name]EDIT[/name]: [name]Hi[/name] rollo, missed your post - I absolutely adore [name]Prue[/name] [name]Elise[/name]! And very good point about [name]Hermione[/name] and [name]Nathaniel[/name], may have to strike them from the list. Rather too much name when said aloud :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey there! I love all your kids’ names! Especially [name]Viola[/name] [name]Blair[/name] – so beautiful!

[name]Araminta[/name]/[name]Arminta[/name] - I just can’t help but be reminded of mint when I hear this name. Yeah, it may be too long with your girls’ names – but if you love it, just go for it.
[name]Sadie[/name] - Cute, but I wouldn’t use it as a stand-alone. It is a nickname for [name]Sarah[/name].
[name]Meg[/name] - Again, it can’t stand alone ([name]IMO[/name]). But I do like it!
[name]Effie[/name] - See [name]Meg[/name] and [name]Sadie[/name].
[name]Helena[/name] - I like it! I just feel like you could have pronunciation problems.
[name]Norah[/name] - I like this a lot, except I think it’s a bit nicer without the “h”…
[name]Bridie[/name] - Cute! As a nickname for [name]Bridget[/name]?
[name]Prue[/name] - I’ve never heard of this before! Is it a nickname for [name]Prudence[/name]?
[name]Marianne[/name] - I’m not a fan. It just seems very cheesy to me.
[name]Tessa[/name] - I’m not a huge fan of [name]Tessa[/name]. I much prefer [name]Tess[/name]. I know a [name]Tess[/name] who is super spunky and fun! Why not [name]Theresa[/name] nn [name]Tess[/name]?
[name]Hermione[/name] - I like the comfort and intelligence that this name gives off, but it may be too HP…
[name]Rosalie[/name] - [name]Love[/name]! It’s so elegant and sweet – how can you go wrong? From here, you can get to the [name]Rosie[/name] nickname.
[name]Susannah[/name] - With the nickname [name]Sunny[/name] – so cute!
[name]Saskia[/name] - This is one of my all-time favorites. It’s Dutch/[name]German[/name]. My only hesitation is the pronunciation problems…
[name]Eleanora[/name] - Sure. I’m not crazy about it.

You may like:
[name]Edith[/name] ([name]Edie[/name]?)
[name]Maisie[/name] (for [name]Margaret[/name]?)

[name]Oscar[/name] - [name]Love[/name]! Strong and handsome and dignified.
[name]Nathaniel[/name] - I love it! This is my brother’s name – we call him [name]Nate[/name] (sometimes Natie) for short. It’s so cute while also classic and strong.
[name]Percival[/name] - [name]Love[/name]! The nn [name]Percy[/name] is adorable.
[name]Pip[/name] - I do like it as a nickname for [name]Phillip[/name], like you mentioned!
[name]Theodore[/name] - I adore this! The nickname [name]Theo[/name] is so cute.
[name]Alistair[/name] - It fits well with your kids’ names. I’m kind of indifferent to it.
[name]Archer[/name] - I love this! I don’t know about across the ocean, but I know that hear in the States this name has been gaining momentum. [name]Archie[/name] is so cute!

I hope that helps!!!

Your children have lovely names!
I will comment on your edited list.

[name]Araminta[/name]/[name]Arminta[/name] (is [name]Araminta[/name] too long compared to the others?)- dislike this, I’m afraid- all frill and no substance.
[name]Sadie[/name]- nice as a nn.
[name]Helena[/name]- lovely
[name]Hermione[/name] (unsure, too HP?)- I like it but it will make people think of HP at present.
[name]Marianne[/name]- I love it but it never seems v popular on NB.
[name]Rosie[/name]-nice but prefer it as a nn to [name]Rosalind[/name]/ [name]Rosalie[/name].
[name]Prue[/name] (can’t quite let go yet)-okay
[name]Eleanora[/name] (liking this more and more)- lovely and love [name]Eleanor[/name] too.
[name]Saskia[/name] (and this)- v nice but seems a different style to [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Viola[/name].
[name]Susannah[/name] ([name]Sunny[/name], n’aw!)- lovely

My favourites with your children’s names: [name]Helena[/name], [name]Marianne[/name], [name]Eleanora[/name] and [name]Susannah[/name]

[name]Phillip[/name] nn [name]Pip[/name]?- nice and love [name]Pip[/name]!
[name]Archer[/name] nn [name]Archie[/name]- okay
[name]Theodore[/name]- love it!
[name]Alistair[/name]- okay

I love [name]Nathaniel[/name] too but I see that has been removed :frowning:

Thank you for all your wonderful comments and suggestions! I think I agree with pretty much everything that’s been said here!
Okay, this is the list as stands. We’ve added/struck a couple of names, based on things we’ve heard on here and elsewhere.

[name]Harrison[/name] - like this, but not [name]Harry[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name] - struggling for girls’ names that match
[name]Theodore[/name] - with middle name [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Finch[/name]?
[name]Philip[/name] - nickname [name]Pip[/name] is keeping this in the running, although obviously he’d outgrow it and I’m not sure I like full-on [name]Philip[/name]. What do people think of Phileas… too out-there?

Girls: (we’ve nixed all the names that sound too much with our last - [name]Hermione[/name], sob!)
[name]Livia[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] - too close to [name]Viola[/name]?
[name]Rosen[/name] [name]Firth[/name] - can’t decide whether to use [name]Rosie[/name] or [name]Rosen[/name] or something else entirely
[name]Marianne[/name] [name]Ivy[/name] - not sure if I like the idea of [name]Marianne[/name] better than the name itself… better off left in a BBC period drama?
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]Ivy[/name] - more current sounding than [name]Marianne[/name], but with [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Viola[/name] we might sound a bit hipster…?
[name]EDIT[/name]: [name]Tess[/name] [name]Willa[/name] - liking this a lot at the moment, but I’m no judge of names in my sleep-deprived state

Other girls’ names we’ve still got floating around are [name]Bonnie[/name], [name]Milla[/name] and [name]Alice[/name].

Congratulations!! Oh I just love your existing baby names! [name]Viola[/name] is beautiful - I distantly know of twins named [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Betty[/name] and they are great names. As an [name]Iris[/name] Murdoch fan, I completely adore [name]Iris[/name].

A few suggestions - trying to think literary and vintage!

[name]Tess[/name] (going down the [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Hardy[/name] route! What can I say - I’m a [name]Dorset[/name] girl)
[name]Sylvie[/name]/[name]Sylvia[/name] (Plath?)
[name]Matilda[/name] / [name]Tilly[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name] / [name]Bea[/name]
[name]Alice[/name] (this is my name - I’m [name]Alice[/name] [name]Rose[/name], and I always think of it as quite a lovely ‘vintage’ name. So obviously I approve of [name]Alice[/name] and/or [name]Rose[/name]/[name]Rosie[/name]/[name]Rosa[/name])

I like [name]Prue[/name] too, as in [name]Prudence[/name] (Dear [name]Prudence[/name]!) although I’m afraid it does make me think of [name]Prue[/name] and [name]Trude[/name] - - YouTube. [name]Eleanora[/name] is beautiful, although she’d probably become an [name]Ellie[/name] or [name]Ella[/name] at school… [name]Nora[/name] is a very cute nickname though. I don’t love [name]Susannah[/name] but [name]Sunny[/name] is so cute! [name]Hermione[/name] is a little [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]-esque for me but a nice name otherwise. [name]Marianne[/name] is also lovely.

[name]Gabriel[/name] (I always loved the name [name]Gabriel[/name] [name]Oak[/name] from Far From The Madding Crowd)
[name]Robin[/name] (makes me think of [name]Christopher[/name] [name]Robin[/name]. Speaking of which…)
[name]Christopher[/name] / [name]Topher[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name] / [name]Art[/name] (like [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] - very regal!)
[name]Samuel[/name] / [name]Samson[/name]

One of my favourite names is [name]Theodore[/name] (I would choose the nickname [name]Ted[/name]), I absolutely adore it. I also love [name]Pip[/name] although not so much [name]Philip[/name] (that just makes me think of all the millions of [name]Phil[/name]'s I’ve met in my life) - I also like [name]Kit[/name], [name]Ted[/name], [name]Art[/name] etc. Sweet short names. I love [name]Nathaniel[/name] - why couldn’t it be shortened to [name]Nate[/name]? I really like [name]Oscar[/name] but it’s getting quite popular recently. And [name]Archie[/name] is lovely!

Personally I see nothing wrong with being seen as a royalist - all the royals have great names. As long as you don’t use ‘[name]Fergie[/name]’ I think you’ll be safe

Ooh I thought of a couple more!

[name]Noel[/name] / [name]Noelle[/name]

[name]Albert[/name] / [name]Bert[/name] / [name]Berty[/name] (so cute!)
[name]Frederick[/name] / [name]Freddy[/name]

[name]Just[/name] some more ideas!

Thank you! My grandmother’s name is [name]Iris[/name], and she’s one of my favourite people to walk this earth.

Your suggestions have been great - I’m going to add [name]Tess[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] (lucky you, great name) to the list!
O.H loves [name]Sylvie[/name], btw. It’s one of these names I really wish I liked. [name]Lovely[/name] meaning, fantastic namesake, but I just can’t get behind it for some reason!
[name]Ruby[/name] was my favourite name as a kid, but it’s everywhere at the moment. Same with [name]Esme[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] but it sounds ridiculous with our surname :frowning:
I think the Beatles’ song is the main reason I like [name]Prudence[/name] ([name]Prue[/name] and [name]Trude[/name]! aha, never seen that before) but I don’t think my future daughter would thank me for a name with the word Prude so obviously stuck in the middle. :stuck_out_tongue:

[name]Rowan[/name] is a gorgeous name, but it’s off-limits as my sisters’ kids are called [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name].
I like your suggestions of [name]Albert[/name] (but probably too hard to pull off if my offspring is anything like myself), [name]Frederick[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name]. I think [name]Jules[/name] [name]Verne[/name]'s full name was [name]Jules[/name] [name]Gabriel[/name] [name]Verne[/name], which is just brilliant.

  • is feeling high on names…-

 Sometimes spending too much time can make you feel that way (“high on names”)…

I love [name]Milla[/name]! It’s one of my absolute favorites. I’ve always wanted to name my second daughter [name]Matilda[/name] nn [name]Milla[/name].

Phileas is too out there for the nn [name]Pip[/name], I think.

Have you considered [name]Hector[/name]? Or is that way too much? What about [name]Emil/name? I have a little cousin named this! It’s really cute! Plus, the actor [name]Emile[/name] [name]Hirsch[/name] freshens it up.

I honestly think it’s a little too late to worry if you’re hipster. I think [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Viola[/name] are quite hipster. But why is that bad thing? They’re both gorgeous names!

[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Finch[/name] is cute!

[name]Matilda[/name] [name]Ivy[/name] doesn’t have great flow. And yes, [name]Marianne[/name] doesn’t sound good with [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Viola[/name]. [name]Livia[/name] – maybe too close to [name]Viola[/name]. [name]Rosen[/name] – not sure how I feel about this. Feels too surname-y! Why not even something like [name]Rosalia[/name] (roe-ZAHL-yuh). Or [name]Dahlia[/name]? [name]Delilah[/name]?

[name]Tess[/name] [name]Willa[/name] – I think [name]Willa[/name] is too close to [name]William[/name]. [name]Tess[/name] is cute and spunky though.

I’m really not a fan of [name]Bonnie[/name]. :frowning: It makes me think of “bony” and I think of an emaciated anorexic model. [name]Alice[/name] is really cute though! I love how it’s soft and smart and sweet.

What about [name]Helen[/name] with the nicknames [name]Nell/name or [name]Leni[/name]? What about [name]Felicity[/name]? [name]Savannah[/name]? Or what about [name]Mary[/name] flat out? I think [name]Mary[/name] is pretty!

[name]Emil[/name] - really like! [name]Emile[/name] [name]Hirsch[/name] does indeed freshen it up  Not sure if we have the heritage to pull it off though.
[name]Hector[/name] - a little too upper-class for us
[name]Milla[/name] - I love how it looks on paper, but would people think I’d named my daughter ‘[name]Miller[/name]’ if I’d just introduced her?!
[name]Rosen[/name] - I’m fluctuating between hating it and loving it. I might go for just [name]Rosie[/name]?
[name]Tess[/name] - you’re right, [name]Willa[/name] is too close. Can’t find anything I like as much as [name]Willa[/name] though. [name]Tess[/name] [name]Milla[/name] just sounds like a farmer to me
[name]Bonnie[/name] - funny how names hold different connotations for people! I always think of [name]Bonnie[/name] [name]Wright[/name], the girl who plays [name]Ginny[/name] in the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] series
[name]Mary[/name] - pretty! and simple enough for wildly obscure middle names like, I don’t know, Pomeline or something… (I think it’s time to sleep)

And indeed, I feel I need to say this; hipster is not a bad thing! I only wish I were better acquainted with it! However, where we live names like [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Theo[/name], [name]Matilda[/name] are VERY hipster, and [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Viola[/name] only mildly so (especially with [name]William[/name] to balance it out) I don’t want people to be disappointed when they meet us and discover we’re actually just plain, normal weird. Not in a cool, ironic way.

I don’t think you need heritage for [name]Emil/name!

Oh, I forgot that you guys would be saying [name]Milla[/name] with a British accent. Hmm, then maybe yes, it might sound like [name]Miller[/name]…

[name]Rosen[/name] – honestly, I’d let go of it. Why not just [name]Rose[/name] with the nickname [name]Rosie[/name]?

[name]How[/name]'s [name]Tess[/name] [name]Camilla[/name]? Is that better? Or [name]Tess[/name] [name]Priscilla[/name] (or is that too much?)? What about [name]Tess[/name] [name]Matilda[/name] even?

[name]Bonnie[/name] – yes, I think [name]Bonnie[/name] [name]Wright[/name] secondly. But I’m still not fond of this name. Personally.

[name]Mary[/name] – Yes, I do love [name]Mary[/name]! And like you said, it yields for some more “out there” nicknames.

As for the hipster thing, that’s completely okay! I think I’m in the same situation. I’m only hipster when it comes to names…and possibly movies…and that’s it. If you love the name, then just go for it, you know?

What about [name]Primrose[/name] [name]Firth[/name] nn [name]Rose[/name]/[name]Rosie[/name]?

Your kids have SUCH pretty names.
I like [name]Hermione[/name] but I think the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] connection is SO strong that I’m not sure I’d use it. Hmm.Your girls names seem to skew more unusual than your boy names.
[name]Helena[/name] and [name]Nathanial[/name]
[name]Helena[/name] and [name]Harrison[/name]
[name]Eleanora[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name] <–cannot tell if this is TOO matchy. I prefer Eleanor to Eleanora, but Eleanor and Theodore IS too matchy. I think I like it though.

Helena and Willa <–this is my fave for 2 girls.
Helena and Rosalie
Tessa and Willa

Oscar and Archer <–my fave for two boys. Love.
Harrison and Nathanial
Theodore and Oscar–I don’t like how much longer Theodore is but I like R sounds. Would you consider Oliver instead of Oscar?

I adore [name]Nigel[/name] [name]Pip[/name] and [name]Norah[/name] [name]Prue[/name] for twins.
[name]Just[/name] throwing these out there…
[name]Oliver[/name] [name]Jude[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Jewel[/name]
[name]Ellis[/name] [name]Wade[/name] and [name]Effie[/name] [name]Wynn[/name]
