Iris or Zoe?

We have been having such a hard time picking a girl’s name out. Our last name starts with an S and is one syllable. Which do you prefer [name]Iris[/name] or [name]Zoe[/name]? neither? [name]TIA[/name] for your opinions.

I adore the name [name]Iris[/name], it will always be my favorite. Personally I don’t think I’d use it in the first name spot. It’s a little too uncommon for me. That might be the opposite for you. [name]Zoe[/name] however seems to be fairly popular, so it really depends on what you’re going for. [name]Iris[/name] is by far my favorite though, such a beautiful name.

[name]Iris[/name] is my favorite of the two, but with a last name starting with “s” it may prove to be a bit hard to pronounce. What about [name]Zoe[/name] [name]Iris[/name]?

I wondered about the “s” factor but when you say it out loud it isn’t hard to pronounce, does run together a little bit but I don’t think it is awful…not sure how important it is as we are not often called by both our first and last name…
I forgot to mention we already have a middle name picked out that we are set on.

My choice would be [name]Iris[/name], but, as has already been mentioned, the last name beginning with ‘s’ makes me a little bit more hesitant. You’ve addressed that though, so it seems as if it isn’t too big of a problem for you. I like both names a lot, but [name]Iris[/name] I absolutely adore. I also think that [name]Iris[/name] is more timeless, whereas [name]Zoe[/name] is a bit trendier (not to say that it’s a ‘trendy’ name per se, just that it’s currently experiencing something of a surge in popularity whereas [name]Iris[/name]’ popularity has been more consistent over the years), which I think is in its favor.

Here is a chart showing [name]Zoe[/name]'s popularity from 1880 to now (it’s currently at 31):

And here is [name]Iris[/name]’ popularity over the same period of time (it’s currenlty at 316):

I like [name]Zoe[/name], but I love [name]Iris[/name].

[name]Iris[/name] and [name]Zoe[/name] are lovely! If you didn’t already have a MN picked out, I would suggest [name]Iris[/name] [name]Zoe[/name]. As it is, I say [name]Iris[/name]. It’s less expected, I think, and the flowers are just beautiful. If you don’t have a problem with [name]Iris[/name] next to your last name, then I really don’t see any problem with using it.

Good luck!

I think these boards will always pick [name]Iris[/name], it seems to be a favorite. I much prefer [name]Zoe[/name] though…it is more popular, but it also has more life and vivacity to it. [name]Iris[/name] still feels dusty to me. [name]Even[/name] as a flower I think of it as a grandmother’s flower. shrug

I like [name]Iris[/name] better. And I am not a fan of flowery names. I just think it’s especially pretty and uncommon and the flower itself is so beautiful. I think [name]Irie[/name] or [name]Ira[/name] is a cute nn. [name]Zoe[/name] is a little trendy/young for my tastes. It’s hard to imagine an older [name]Zoe[/name] with a serious profession or demeanor. To me [name]Iris[/name] is more universal- it can be young or old, spunky or studious, ect

Thank you everyone for you opinions, it really helps to have some feedback. We originally were thinking of [name]Zoe[/name] and it has always been on our list but we are looking for something that isn’t super popular and also a name that will age well. We also recently have read quite a few comments of people saying [name]Zoe[/name] is a dog’s name! :frowning: It’s hard for me to get past that, I certainly don’t want my little girl to have a “dog” name.
[name]Iris[/name] is a new name for us that we only considered a couple weeks ago. We both like it a fair bit but I think also worried about the old lady connotation. [name]Glad[/name] to hear lots of positive comments on it. [name]Ty[/name].
